I've seen them starting at about 15k. But I guess it depends on where you live. If you're building, it's less expensive to add an elevator than design a one story home.
The red switch I'm guessing is the alarm in case the elevator gets stuck. The black one could be for the light, or if it has a fan it could control that.
This is probably for handicapped people. Not to mention, if you wanted a piece of furniture, what if it fit in your elevator? (Yes I know house elevators usually wont fit something like a bed, but how about a TV, or a cabinet, or a few chairs?)
