    Now, I have one or two more things to mention about REmake that I didn't think of in time for the video.
    After thinking about it more and more, it's kind of insane how much of REmake's early game was restricted all for that one crimson-head scripted sequence. The hallway leading to the plant/tiger statue/side room, the crow puzzle room which leads to the cemetery via gate, and the forest 2nd floor balcony are locked away until you get the armor key...of course in addition to every other room that originally required the armor key. You're SO railroaded into the sword key + imitation key path that you literally have no way of obtaining any of the masks until the armor key. I just don't think it was worth the trouble, just for that ONE crimsonhead to pop up like that. I know the triggers for crimsonheads to stand up are related to how long in-game it's been, and I would be interested to know if anyone has tried to spend hours in the mansion while killing the zombies but without grabbing the dog whistle. I'd imagine, again, that NO crimsonheads are allowed to stand until the scripted one, but I'd love to know if someone went the distance to test it.
    Also, there's a 4th pre-placed zombie in the basement, near the elevator. I believe he comes back as a regular zombie after the residence, but I'm not 100%.
    Let me know if you discovered something I didn't touch on in this video!

      Dude, I swear I was going crazy - this has become a big issue with youtube game essayists lately. There’s so much bloat and pointless synopsizing, or just playing full, minute long cutscenes verbatim without any commentary. I’m not here to watch what I’ve already seen lol, I’m here for *your* input. Like, if I’m physically skipping sections of your analysis, it’s not a very good analysis.
      I think Dorkaxe is one of the few right now that does it right, but I also blame youtube for incentivizing content creators to pad out their videos when we can have something more succinct and effective. There’s nothing wrong with having a longer video, just as long as you’re actually using that time.
      Idk, maybe I’ve finally become a boomer.

    The bit about being able to look away during a horror movie and have the scary/disturbing parts play regardless is such a great point. I don't think the interactivity of a survival horror being an important part of the experience is a new concept, but the actual progression to overcome/get through the scary parts really draws on something deeper. I had a very similar experience playing Pathologic- it would get in my head and just really make me feel kind of unwell and claustrophobic? So I'd put it down and go do something else, but the fact that I still had "unfinished business" was like a siren song that had me returning. It's not even perseverance at that point, it's just... *oh shit* ...survival

    Further notes on Richard in the remake, if you 'kill' yawn with his help as Jill it will spring back to life to attack her just for him to hop in the way and protect Jill before the snake slithers away for the later encounter.
    Him dying also results in a small setback for both Chris AND Jill as it prevents you from getting the assault shotgun for either playthrough.

      I was genuinely impressed with the character models. I wonder if the pre-rendered backgrounds gave them more polygons to work with when designing them? Specifically, Jill's chest looks so much less pointy/blocky than Lara's did in Tomb Raider. Weird thing to notice, but what can I say.

    • @sherif956
      @sherif956 Před 8 měsíci

      @Dorkaxe I think the reason for tht was cause unlike environments in modern REs which needs to b scanned with the RE engine,pre rendered backgrounds barely take any of the engines processing power regardless of which engine u use since they're at the end of the day 2D rly detailed and beautifully drawn art,makin the lions share of whatever engine u use focused more on character,item,enemy models,like imagine if an Re engine game was made with pre-rendered backgrounds? The models would look so realistic it'd legit look like a movie and with fixed cam angles it might as well b,plus the environments would never get glitchy even if ur playing on an older console,all tht with added bonus of capcom spending less money but ahh one can dream 😅

    I can agree on Darkwood being a very good recent example of horror that actually cower in fear. The first playthrough, the first 2 nights, i didnt come out of my 1 room i barricaded and trapped everywhere, while hearing a knock on the door being afraid i will die, only to later learn it's an event. I also wish to replay that fear, but this is what all media, the novelty its based on goes away after experiencing it the first time. The best we can hope is that new developers learn and use their methods, so we can relive that fear again but in different settings/worlds.

  • @souio
    @souio Před 11 měsíci

    The second playthroughs being more enjoyable is something about gaming that I've realized a while ago.
    A lot of the "classics" or "all time greats", regardless of genre, I'll play through for the first time and I'd be like "that was alright, pretty good even, but I'm not sure of what the fuss is about", then some time on a rainy day I'll start it up a second time to kill time and realize that it's much more enjoyable the second time around than the first. With the mechanical knowledge and the controls mastered, I can go through the game like a badass and try different and more experimental stuff, then I realize a lot of the all-time classics aren't actually classics because your first playthrough blew you away (a lot of the times it actually doesn't), but because you can replay the game over and over, and still just have as much, if not more, fun than your first time through!
    That's why I'm critical of reviews that are like "I paid 20 dollars for a 2-8 hour game", cause if I can play that 2 hour game 100 times and have a blast each time, then it's more than worth the asking price.
    I feel like with so many steam sales and backlogs etc that we're so concerned about playing through a game and moving onto the next as quickly as possible that we really do miss out and don't get to appreciate games and we judge everything on our first playthrough alone.

    Dang I had no idea of the DS version, but I'm so glad you covered this. I completely identified with your "familiarity but not mastery" and second playthrough ideas, they were really good ideas to build the video around and something I definitely identified with for sure. There's games like Pikmin that I automatically applied the idea too in my brain. Overall 0/10 for the Lisa disrespect :P
    But fr I will check out Signalis I love the art direction!

    • @Dorkaxe
      @Dorkaxe  Před rokem

      Pikmin is good example of the learning/2nd playthrough thing for sure, much like the Dead Rising games. The removal of the scare-factor is a significant portion of what I was talking about, but I suppose that mostly had to do with RE2 remake, RE7, and Darkwood.
      Lisa is a baby's first Mr. X as far as I'm concerned lol, not that Mr. X is great, but either way. Yeah Signalis is great, glad you might give it a shot. I can't believe it's on console, since it feels so indie, but I saw that it's on...well, everything, which is awesome.

    great conceptualization of the familiarity but not mastery idea, it makes so much sense for the RE games since they incentivize multiple playthroughs. Usually I leave that Viewtiful Joe analysis in the background but I’m gonna watch it again because of this

  • @DavetheTurnip
    @DavetheTurnip Před rokem +1

    I really enjoyed this one. Here's a couple reactions I had while watching it...
    - I've always liked that idea of a second playthrough for the familiarity. So many times it feels like ideas solidify going through a game a second time. Of course I also think a first impression is invaluable. My main concern with trying for a second playthrough is my videos already come out so infrequently going through the game once. 😂
    - When you played the basement theme from the Duelshock version, I thought you were joking. For a while too.
    - I enjoyed the twists and turns you took while discussing each title. Instead of covering all the different aspects of the game piece by piece, it felt like you wrote wherever your whims took you, and I liked the ride. 🙂
    - I'm glad you mentioned the dog hallway in REmake. Running through it for the first time in 2002 and not having the dogs burst through is a moment of subverting my expectations that I'll always fondly remember.
    Are you going to continue on with the future games next?

      Happy you enjoyed it, when I finish something as lengthy as this I kind of can't tell if it's pretentious garbage or not lol

    I'm always so conflicted abut the ink ribbon thing, at the time it made games so much more intense.
    But these days, man I'm 30 and having to play a whole section of game again because of some slip up is...just annoying. But I do wish more games had some genuine punishment for death, I think that's one thing that's good with Soulslike titles because you CAN get your souls/runes back but you can fuck it up again and lose everything if you're not more careful, which can be a huge loss if you were hoarding them.
    I actually had to quit Alien Isolation even though I loved it because my autistic ass couldn't handle the save station beeping, it for some reason triggered my sound sensitivity and when that happens I get more and more frustrated.
    And I still remember exactly when I had to peace out, there was a whole like half hour section of the game where you have to sneak past the Xeno hoping not to aggro it, do a bunch of puzzles, avoid Androids and then at the end I kept getting grabbed by the Xeno from vents and whatnot because I was running away from the stupid droids to avoid making the Xeno pop out. I must have tried it like 12 times or something all while that beeping was making me more and more uncomfortable.
    Obviously that's a consequence of my unique difficulties but it was still just too much of a pain in the ass to lose all that progress.
    That said I never played an RE game that had any kind of sections that felt *too* difficult in any way, they were balanced extremely well and I think that's where most games with limited saves go wrong.

    • @Dorkaxe
      @Dorkaxe  Před 19 dny

      Yeah I'm with you. Some games you can tolerate it, hell, some moods you can tolerate it and others you can't. I recently had to stop playing Nine Sols since the checkpoints were spread out enough that dying to a miniboss or something meant I had to either run through a bunch of stuff or fight all the enemies on the way. It was getting me so stressed out, and not in a fun way, so after 2 main bosses completed, for my health, I just peaced out and uninstalled the game.
      It's odd, since I can definitely appreciate the statues of Marika in Elden Ring for the reason of "lemme try again right away", but I can also appreciate the Demon's Souls approach of having to fight through a level again, since the bosses felt like the climax TO the level.
      Like you said though with Alien Isolation, sometimes there's one or two things off about it, which can basically completely kill your motivation to continue.

      Literally all horror is survival horror, who ever came up with survival horror is stupid and the people that continually fart on about it are stupid. The entire goal of ANY horror is to survive, only a team of idiots would go to any sort of incident unprepared and or unarmed, there is zero reason everyone in a horror game should be "incompetent" as some "special" people constantly cry about.
      There is zero horror where people go into an incident hoping to die and the "special elite" team would have gone with alot more than a handgun with 1 clip and a knife, especially not knowing what they were walking into after a team disappeared and couldn't be reached
