2020 Hyundai Ioniq PHEV - Test Drive and Review

  • The 2020 Hyundai Ioniq is excellent in all three flavors (hybrid, plug-in, and electric), but the plug-in hybrid version is a nice "best of all worlds" option. Efficient, useful, and affordable, Hyundai did a lot right. You can tell when Charlie really likes a car, because the review ends up lasting half an hour.

    I went from a tuned 400+ horsepower Subaru WRX to an Ioniq and I love the little car. Don't miss the premium fuel, don't miss the 25mpg, this is a great little car and the Highway Driving Assist blew me away with how good it is.

      @@R3c0nf1gur3d The looks of it, the power and the handling but comparing the two is ridiculous. I don't miss the 25mpg with premium fuel at all. It's nice to be in a grown up vehicle and I can feel good about my impact on the environment compared to the WRX. This car, at least in Limited trim has so many nice little well thought out details that make the driving experience so much better for all the highway driving I do.

    Great review! I got a White PHEV Limited back in July(so the Gray interior works out). The only mod I did was to replace the rims & kept the tires. It's a GREAT commuter car with all the bells & whistles. I highly recommend it. My current driving pattern gives me 550 miles on gas over 3 months while the full electric driving gives me 1500 over the same time. At this rate, I'll fill up the tank 4-5 times a year 👍🏼✊💰🚗

    The biggest bummer about the 2020 refresh is the loss of physical buttons on the dash. They went to touchscreen or haptic or whatever you want to call it on what I consider to be critical physical tangible buttons for HVAC and radio. But I appreciate the amount of useable information theyve put into the infotainment system. Everything is integrated well. Thank you for pointing out the charging options because thats the kindve thing most would gloss over but plays heavily into the cars day to day useability. I just wish there was still an array of buttons below the improved screen. Its a personal thing I guess.

      currently in the process of upgrading my volt's 12v battery with a ~4kwh lifepo4 back im building. some people on the volt forums reported issues with the car not charging a lifepo4 battery due to the slightly higher voltage of the lifepo4 cells (basically the car thinks the 12v is full until it discharges far enough to where the lifepo4 BMS goes into low voltage protection).
      imo thats a feature instead of a bug because I added 200watts of solar to my car's roof which feeds directly into the 12v system. the result should be that my high voltage battery should get around 10-15 miles of additional range since all the 12v loads are to be handled by the expanded battery and kept topped up by solar panels. going to carry a 12v boost pack just in case.
      also will add a small 12v 40w RV water tank heating pad wired into a small thermostat circuit which should keep the battery from being damaged by discharging below freezing. puts the 8.9kwh battery of the hyundai in perspective, my 4kwh battery only cost ~340$ to build.

    Shame about the transmission and the regenerative braking. I test drove one of these the other day and was very impressed with the build quality, handling, comfort, but the actual performance of the drivetrain felt significantly less smooth and powerful compared to my 2013 Volt. I definitely did not feel like it had the "instant torque" that my Volt does, but the one I test drove hadn't been plugged in at all, so was only running in hybrid mode. Even so, my Volt feels more responsive in hybrid mode, can't quite figure that out

    • @Rhaman68
      @Rhaman68 Před 2 lety +5

      Yes, no instant torque compare to an EV because the Ioniq is not an EV. First, it has a dual clutch transmission and secondly, the electric motor is about 59 HP. The Volt is an EV, not a PHEV, with a range extender ICE motor. Instant torque is not a selling point for PHEV, it’s fuel economy, and for the Ioniq, it’s magical. Why? The battery is 8.9 but only uses 80% for powering the car in EV mode. 1.8 or so KWh level= zero EV range. 7.2 or so KWh plus 59 HP motor are tiny numbers yet it’s designed to move the car 29-32 miles, highway speeds, all in electric. Rick, the answer is: needs. The Ioniq PHEV functions in electric mode, the Sonata does not. The EV mode extends a gallon of gasoline to almost 100 mpg. The Sonata, not. The efficiency of the Ioniq in EV mode means all my needs, food, medical, parks, hardware, bank, etc. are w/o using gas. With my solar, running on EV is free. Each week I hardly use gas. That’s “infinity” as to mpg. The Sonata, not. The PHEV has a federal, some states, tax benefits, the Sonata, not. The $34K is close to $29K. The Ioniq has a lift back rear door easy to load/unload; with back seats down, large cargo space, Sonata, not. At 65 mph highway, I have logged 62.7 mpg oh Hybrid mode. Sonata, not. Besides, I got mine used with 20K miles for $21,5. Bargain. So there, needs. Thanks for asking. Please don’t drive at 80 mph! It’s dangerously deadly.

    So.. It's smaller than the prime, and more expensive when loaded..Granted, cheaper on the low end.. Also doesn't have Toyota's reliability.. Granted.. Much better looking.. but, i mean.. if you are buying a commuter.. really reliability, resale, and comfort i would think are the more important desires..

      Less range in ev tho. Those 5 miles is a lot when you add it up and can save you more per charge.

      @@skepticalmechanic dude an ev can’t go 640 in all ev. That’s gasoline with minor ev 20-25. Ioniq has more ev range in full ev mode. Idk what you’re talking about, I’m just putting straight facts. Over the long run those extra ev range will cost you less than the Prius. Cvt is ehh, could be better.

      @@Fumbiii16 I doubt that… my Prius Prime 2022 after Toyota rebate and $4,500 tax credit only cost me $25,500. I get a range of 640 miles with 11 gallons of gas and a full tank… most EVs are over 42k… some do not get the tax credit like the car with a T! With the charging infrastructure as it is now it’s just not doable unless you’re just running around town. Who wants to sit in a car for an hour while it charges? Not me… oil changes cost me $35.00 and brakes last 100k on a Prius… what don’t you understand?

    Oh no.. this "easy access" is going to be a thing is it? People have kids you know? Kids that need childseats at the back. It is already tight when I am driving. There is zero change at having it facing rearward. "Easy access" will make it even worse.
