Disagreeing with Monica as number one. Chandler and Ross always seemed more financially stable, especially because they both supported her during the show.
I agree Ross should be on top as I don’t remember him ever struggling financially or borrowing money. Side note him having 4 divorce made me laugh hard because I never really thought about it.
monica #1 is crazyy. i know her personality is portrayed as ocd but it doesnt always translate to finances and she was shown not to have good financial habits multiple times
You forgot that monica didnt have substantial money saved for her own wedding....and relied on her parents to finance the bigger part of it....she was so upset when she was told that they spent it on buying the beach house....their wedding relied almost totally on chandler's savings and when she was fired from her job had to borrow money from ross....that somewhat goes against how monica was audited by you....and i think both ross and chandler were the steadiest of the group income wise... i dont think ross was ever unemployed in the series...i am not sure though....Great video as always!!!
Exactly what I was going to comment. Chandler deserves the first spot because not only did he have proven savings that Monica wanted to send on a wedding, but also firm decision making as he was completely against it. Also helping Joey was a great thing, in todays world we forget that helping friends is important, as they will do the same for us. not only that Chandler did it while have good saving for himself.
Ross was unemployed for some weeks I think? That sandwich incident got him fired and that's why he transferred to teaching in univ. But yeah, he's the most financially stable.
Rachel is absolutely the best saver in the show- she was ready to have a child as a single parent still in the city and really didn't even factor in Ross cause she didn't know if he'd want to be involved. I will say I think outside of subsidizing Joey and Monica's wild spending habits I think Chandler is also really great but he's got some expensive friends.
Ross had a kid and lived by himself the whole show (besides the small period living with Joey and chandler) Rachel was roommates with everyone throughout the show. And his second apartment was pretty nice. So I think it was more Ross and Chandler because they hardly were struggling financially throughout the 10 seasons. Chandler being financially stable enough to loan money to Joey and Ross giving money to Monica. And even tho Chandler “loaned” thousands of dollars to Joey he still had savings. Which would mean he’s really good at managing his money because Chandler was basically spending money on Joey as you would a kid.
Monica definitely wasn’t smart with her money. when she lost her job in the early seasons she was borrowing money from Ross for her expenses. And then for her wedding they used Chandlers money bc she didn’t have any/enough saved.
When I saw that I thought she was seen what Monica shows and not what she was and it was that. She focus on how organized she "look" and not on her behavior, Monica invested based on letters she likes, wanted to spend all savings on her wedding, had unreliable jobs during the first seasons and borrow money on the show.
In her defence tho she thought her parents had saved up for her wedding. They also payed for all of ross‘ weddings so on that one I feel like yes she could’ve saved for it and not use all of chandlers savings but she also thought she could rely on her parents
As for Monica: During the show she invested in stocks but gambled around, became addicted and ultimately lost all her money. And during another time when she was unemployed she went through her emergency fund/savings and wanted to ask her parents for money but when she tried to ask them they said she probably wouldn’t need any because surely she put aside a percentage of her monthly income
Chandler and Joey were like brothers to each other. I don’t think Chandler had any siblings, and Joey only had sisters. I can see why Chandler would want to help him out.
I'm not sure Monica has the best financial habits, When she lost her job she had to borrow money from Ross which would indicate that she didn't have enough savings to get her through that tough time. I would say Ross had the best financial situation. He was always employed with good paying jobs, and despite his divorces, he still managed to support himself quite well. And really, I think only the first divorce impacted him financially considering the other two happened so soon after he got married. Just my two cents 🙂
No offense, but i kinda got feeling you either brushed thru the show or never watched it and found all the info somewhere else. Some events that show how finacially good/bad and stable/unstable are missing. Like Chandler having saving account that had great sum of money on it that was later used as ground payment for the house, or all the times monica was caught not having any savings. Plus, Pheobe never inherited house, she lived in two bedroom apartman with her grandma, she had a roommate Denis, at one point Rachel. Edit: and the fact you don't know how to pronounce someone of their names.

Yeah that'd be interesting. They should've been making $100k by the end of the seri3s but they always had money trouble. Plus they kept doing stuff like casually taking out loans to remodel the house.

I dont think they are all working the "normal hours" either. There is a scene in one of the episodes where they all say thier bosses hate them and one of the characters (I think joey) mentions that its probably because its 11 am on a thursday and they are all here, hanging out at the coffee shop instead of at work.
It's good to see pre-nup culture being discussed positively. The best description I've seen for it is "Preparing for the worst when things are at their best".

I have a prenup, it wasn't awkward for us because we have always had an open and honest relationship with our finances. My husband has worked really hard since he was 19 and I don't think that it's fair that I get half of it because I didn't work for half of it. We have property in both our names and we keep good records of what we spend and what each contributes.
Semi fair point. But ultimately you're comparing two different scenarios. I don't think Carrie's rent controlled apartment was passed down to her. Whereas Monica's apartment was under her grandmother's name. If her grandmother has lived there decades before Monica took over, the incremental rent increases would realistically be quite low. Maybe not $200 a month low, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was less than what Carrie paid for her apartment. I know of people who have lived in NYC their entire lives and even today their rent tops out at $1000. So how much a tenant pays would largely depend on when their lease began because the rent increases were so minute. So yes I agree that $200 a month seems unrealistic even for a rent controlled lease that has been active for decades but I wouldn't compare it to Carrie's rent controlled lease because she had lived in NYC for a much shorter time than presumably Monica's grandmother and then Monica after (remember, Monica wasn't legally the lease holder) @@tacobellbeefburrito

Monica definitely didn’t have the best money management since she ran through her savings when she was unemployed and had to borrow money from Ross, didn’t have savings for her own wedding and famously overspent on the boots which she eventually lost. If you watched the whole show you would know that Ross was inspite of the divorces and children was the only character who never had money problems.
I'm still confused as to how Sheldon and his physicist at Caltech salary needed a roommate to split rent with but struggling actress Penny was able to live alone across the hall.

Your ranking was pretty accurate, I love how you talk about the fact that circumstances and background matter. I’m so tired of people on CZcams acting like we don’t make it in life because we don’t have the right mindset when others have millionaire parents, connections and jobs handed to them as soon as they feel ready to work. Of course good habits, good money management and a winner mindset help to balance a bad start in life but it’s important to acknowledge that part of success mostly overlooked by wannabe financial gurus
HUGE thing you left out with Pheobe, it was revealed in one of the later seasons that she had "sold out" and took a job as a masseuse in a spa chain. She was likely doing fairly well after that. Also, Chandler was clearly #1 when he revealed how much he had been saving for their future and Monica wanted to spend ALL of it for the wedding. (she later changed her mind)
I bet Joey was probably also kindly supporting his agent Estelle giving her a big percentage, given that he and that paper eater were her only clients.
Monica didn’t seem to be investing. She ended up playing the stock market at one point when she was unemployed and didn’t seem to understand it at all. Chandler drained his savings account at one point to buy the entertainment unit and chairs and another time for his and Monica’s wedding. Chances are chandler and Monica started over financially after their wedding when they were older and smarter and wanted to buy a home and have children. I’m assuming they would have gotten advice from Monica’s parents at that point or reached out to an advisor because they made really impulsive financial decisions throughout the show.
Remember how Joey bought a house full of expensive stuff when he finally got paid, and then he lost all of it through repossession? That is why he had the ugly dog statue in the apartment because Ross or Chandler (can’t recall) bought it for him. I know it’s all fun here, but I disagree that Joey was good with money.
I think Ross or Chandler are much better off than Monica. When she lost her job, it was revealed that she had zero savings and Ross had to lend her money. She wanted to spend Chandler’s large savings on their wedding, which he had been saving for a home. Luckily she “agreed” to have a small wedding in the end. And don’t forget the $650 boots that she couldn’t wear because they hurt her feet.
I knew people on the upper west side I the 1980s in somewhat comparable living situations to the Seinfeld characters. Kramer was obviously ridiculous, but the point of his character is that he somehow always falls bass ackwards into money. He, Newman and Jerry have implicitly been in the same buildong for 10+ years so should benefit from rent control. Jerry is supposed to be not Jerry the hit sitcom star, but stand up comic Jerry, who apparently plays comedy clubs in Dayton with up to 50 people in attendance, but has money to burn on new cars, which is pretty unbelievable. The most implausible character is probably Elaine, who has crappy jobs but somehow affords nice one bedroom apartments.
Idk if this is relevant or not, but as we rewatch the show, husband and I could not stop counting how many groceries they have and almost never use. Specially Joey, who never cooks but has a full pantry. I also love to stop and look through Monica's pantry, full of italian/foreign products (makes sense bc of her job, but also very expensive to have). Plus the fact they are always walking into each other's fridge and taking some fancy water, beer, orange juice and what ever.
During her season of unemployment, Monica actually addresses that she's been putting money away into savings for years to her father, but that she's now drained it all. She pushed to the last possible moment which I believe was pretty part into the season, so you hit the nail on the head there. Edit: Well technically, she doesn't tell her dad she drained it. She's embarrassed to do so.
On the divorce thing... who is left financially destitute after a divorce really depends on where you live and how much you make. I have male friends who's wives had full affairs, even bringing the kids around the guy they were cheating with. Because this is a no fault state, her behavior was not apart of divorce proceedings and it was all but guaranteed that the woman got custody of the children- regardless of the fact that the kids wanted to live with their father. With multiple children, a man can expect to pay $3k/month in child support and alimony. Prenuptial agreements are not iron clad and are thrown out by the judge often. I won't run on here, but there are absolutely disadvantages to being a man seeking a divorce. I suspect I have a difference of opinion here because I am a but older and have actually seen plenty of my male friends and coworkers go through this.

@@katc2040 in my country, we've something called divorce by mutual consent, basically the couple's saying we wanna part ways for xyz reasons, could be as simple as lack of love to cheating. it's more civil and quick, usually u get it in 6 months, quicker if the court thinks fit. when I hear no fault divorce, that's how my brain translates it. so, i *think* I'm aware adultery could be a factor in no fault...my ques was, why choose this "more" civil ground when you can do all the blame game, since that could affect the alimony and maintenance in ur favour. bc if you're being civil with ur partner, court's gonna interpret the law in the literal sense....that's in women's favour. proving her guilty can give the court a means/ reason to re-evaluate the provisions. so basically i was just asking, if the men wanted to get rid of their cheating wives asap or is there any other reason?
I would say 1. Ross ( hardworking and well organized with money , and he has boundaries when it comes to money ).2. Chandler ( even tho he spent a lot on Joey and spent a huge saving to the wedding , in the end they were buying a house) 3. Rachel , she improved a lot during the show , she’s good at her job and got promoted and she was ready to raise a child without any support as she said it’s alright if Ross doesn’t want to be involved) 4. Phoebe , she’s been always working, trying varies ways to make money, and she was lending money to Monica to do business, and she inherited a house and married a rich man. 5. Monica , even tho she has good job, but she’s not good at investing , she invested in stocks and lots money because she was only relying on her instincts, she faced financial issues while she lost her job means she has no savings , she had no money for the wedding , means she’s organized but just not good with finance. 6. Joey , he just spends whatever he makes and doesn’t prepare for the future.
It’s strange that you would pick Monica for number 1. Anyone who has seen the show has seen her be very irresponsible with money. What comes to mind is her guilting Chandler into spending his life savings on a $100,000 wedding. He wanted to use his savings more practically but gave in to Monica’s desire to have the “perfect” wedding. She also played the stock market based on what letters she liked best in one episode, losing quite a bit. She also was prone to betting money (and losing) on petty things like card games. She also didn’t have any savings when she lost her job, even though her parents encouraged her to have a rainy day fund. She also allowed an identity thief use her credit card to make purchases. So I’m not sure Monica was the most responsible person with money. ETA: Monica does eventually agree to have a smaller wedding and not use up ALL of Chandler’s savings for that purpose.
I recently was in a car accident, no one was hurt but the car was considered totaled due to where the damage was and the fact that all the air bags deployed. Me and my partner saw it as a blessing we are now free from our $600 monthly payment and $120 insurance.

Interesting analysis! You should do Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark, but basically use the vid as an exposé on the (frightening) reality of billionaire power. Rather than focus on what tech or luxury items are *on screen* in the Batman movies, maybe focus on what *isn't* on screen. For example, you could give real-world examples of billionaire industrial or political influence. "Here are some stats on industry / issue X before and after Y billionaire decided to get involved". Or focus on a few billionaire supply chains (the superyacht and shadow-yacht industry comes to mind). Thesis basically boils down to "imagine how much of a difference Bruce Wayne could've made if he'd used [real-world billionaire apparati covered in the video] to fight crime, instead of his fists". That sort of thing. Basically you reel in viewers expecting you to cover Batman tech, and instead you shellshock them with a basic understanding of how much power and influence billionaires wield in our society (and how much of a positive difference they could make, if they focused any amount of effort on the betterment of their fellow man).
I would LOVE to see a financial audit of the whole Brooklyn 99 team, but especially with Jake! I think it would be particularly interesting, considering the huge character growth throughout the show, especially with Jake and Amy. Also related to Brooklyn 99, I would love to see a commentary style video on Amy's approach to the Marie Kondo method in S6, E7. Again, I think it would be really cool because her views and opinions change so much throughout the episode. Although since this storyline only takes place over one episode, I totally understand if it doesn't warrent making a dedicated video. Monica is way low. You must’ve missed the episode where she got fired from her job and had to admit that she wasn’t saving 10% of her paycheck as Ross and Monica’s parents had told them. She is also a giver. She loves to give gifts, even if they’re just baked goods, but baked goods for the whole building? Plus, those ingredients add up. Finally, Chandler had plenty of extra money saved up, but she used it for the wedding. Don’t forget her OCD and the cost of all those cleaning supplies. She washed a whole street of cars once. I think the difficulty Chandler Monica were talking about when he quit, his job was not wanting to break into their savings. They were saving up for potential adoption or IVF. I think it is Chandler savings that kept them afloat. They were able to purchase that house in the suburbs at the end of the show.
Part the way through and have to say I disagree about Joey's spending being relatively stable (though you did mention impulsive spending). When he was doing well in Days of Our Lives he blew his money on rent for a fancy apartment and spent on a lot of crazy expensive home décor for it. In later seasons we see him accidentally win a boat in a charity auction and he decides to keep it even though he can't afford it, choosing to make monthly payments towards it etc. We only see him start to do better with money once or twice, such as the clip you showed where he lent money to Chandler and Monica

@LuuCaicedo completely agree - Monica was not good with money in earlier seasons, and later on we see her want to spend all of Chandler's savings on their wedding and she initially sulks when Chandler refuses. The house they buy in the suburbs also doesn't look like it would have come cheap!

When Chandler and Monica needed to borrow money from Joey for rent and other bills, the amount they needed definitely made it seem like their rent was way more than $200.
Definitely disagree with the perception that Monica was good with her money. She spent more than rent on a pair of boots, had no savings before her wedding and wanted chandler to spend all of his savings. There are many points that demonstrate that she was not a good saver consistently throughout the series.
Do Brooklyn 99! There's even an episode where they actually talk about money because Jake never paid his bills and Gina saved enough to buy Jake's condo

When she lost her job her dad told her she had to put a % of her salary in her savings and she never did.. she was out of money where she had to borrow from ross . And then at the end when they were getting married she had no money to pay for the wedding so she didnt learn anything and still had no money

Do feel like you get Monica and Chandler wrong. When Monica looses her job she doesn't have savings to fall back on, she tries to ask her parents, but they presume she had savings as they taught her. Chandler on the other hand had a lot of savings- enough for the most expensive wedding Monica wanted. It's a bit surprising that he needed help from Joey, possibly they had already had to use his remaining savings
This might be more of how the show portrayed working in academia than your audit but there is a lot more to consider. It's never said if Ross had his grad school funded or if he had to pay for it. If he had to pay for it, he likely has loans. Having gone to school in the late 80s/early 90s granted that would be a lot less debt than today, but still. Even if he had a graduate assistantship or something of the like, he probably wouldn't have much if anything in savings towards the beginning of the show because those salaries barely (if even) cover living expenses. All those years in grad school meant no retirement savings either. You also forgot he did not get that professor job until later in the show and you cannot use a blanket average for a professor salary because it varies greatly by department and school. I don't remember if we know what school he worked for? But he was probably making a lot less than 70k as a paleontology professor in the 90s. One does not just become a tenured professor either. He would have been "tenure-track" and once he received tenure he'd get a decent pay raise. But he's always hanging out with his friends instead of doing research so no way he would ever actually do enough to get tenure (probably the most annoying thing about the show to me is how Ross just gets a professorship like that). For at least the first few seasons Ross works in a museum. Museums do not pay well. They are normally if not always non-profit institutions reliant on grants and loans. I don't remember how many seasons he had that job but that should also be factored in. Not sure where you got the information on benefits being good for academic jobs? That again would vary greatly between schools so it cannot just be assumed.
Uhhhhh Monica clearly didn't save for a rainy day. She had to borrow money from Ross. And she invested in a stock just because it had the same initials as her, and then proceeded to spent all of her money on the stock market in spite of being unemployed. I think money was one area where she wasn't very organized.
She definitely lived in an apartment that she inherited from her grandmother after she died. Plus she met her birth mother later in the series and she seemed to be well off too
Guys it’s a FICTIONAL SHOW. Auditing fictional shows makes as much sense as think we will be able to go to Mars in 10 years because you saw that in a movie.
There’s an episode early in the show where Monica loses her job and when her dad finds out he asks “how much of each check do you put in savings?!” And she quickly replied “30%”
It was proven in that episode that despite having that drilled into her she absolutely did *not* follow that advice, hence having to borrow money from Ross

She also pushed Chandler into spending almost all of his savings on her extravagant wedding, which might explain why they ran into some financial trouble when he decided to switch careers.
But remember that when Chandler was worried about leaving Joey with all the bills when he was moving in with Monica? Joey was actually and sincerely insisting that Chandler should let him take care of everything. So I really don’t think Joey was abusing Chandler’s generosity.

It is amazing to think that money calls money. On the top 3 there are people of the same family. If you switch Chandler and Ross you get 2 siblings on top. Then 3 and 4 you get a spouse of the sibling and the mother of the child of the other sibling. Other thing: the 2 on bottom are the only ones that come from poor families and didn't get to study to have sturdy carreers (because studying is expensive)
Please audit Lorelai from the Gilmore Girls, I know her parents helped out quite a bit, but how did she afford all these take aways? This woman did not cook a meal in her whole life! 😅
Regarding Chandler's lack of boundaries, you missed when he agreed to pay for Monica's wish of extra expensive wedding when it was discovered that her parents had not saved to pay it themselves, and also the episode of the boots Monica wanted but she couldn't walk on.
Phoebe (boo-fay) had a career as a massage therapist through the entire series. She had a ton of side hustles and businesses like catering with Monica and doing work as an extra on TV for Joey’s show. She also married into money when she Married Mike, whose parents are super super WASP old money wealthy.
Love these videos. I know they take a ton of work. I will say your estimate on what Rachel spent on clothes was GROSSLY inadequate. Definitely well into the 5 figure range after the first few seasons.
One thing I'll say to mitigate Rachel's apparent fashion overspend is that she works in the fashion Industry. So not only will she receive discounts, she probably knows when all the sample sales are happening and where the outlet stores are so she can go along to nab herself some bargains. My friend is a designer and he's often forwarding me emails about sample sales for brands like Reiss and Ted Baker.

Well, it is apparent that you never watched the series; you couldn't pronounce the names. Monica as number 1 is also a dead give away. There was a complete episode about Monica's absolute ineptness with money -- she saves nothing and has no safety net, she had to borrow from Ross (who saves 10% of his gross income and puts it into savings) who can't because it would screw up his budget so she has to go to her parents. None of the friends invest or save and this is stated several times. For their wedding, Chandler cashed out his entire 401k of $47,000 to pay for all of Monica's over-the-top bridezilla-ness, Monica thought this was expected. The Friends are awful with money, with the exception of Ross (but your point of his divorces and children is on point) and have no responsibility. Ross would be #1 and the other five tied for last.
23:00 I would love to believe this but this article factors in impacts that arent purely financial. Unfortunately the truth is the current divorce laws are outdated. They need to be updated to reflect dual income couples which is quickly becoming the norm as opposed to single income when things like alimony and division of assets made more sense.

You forgot that monica didnt have substantial money saved for her own wedding....and relied on her parents to finance the bigger part of it....she was so upset when she was told that they spent it on buying the beach house....their wedding relied almost totally on chandler's savings and when she was fired from her job had to borrow money from ross....that somewhat goes against how monica was audited by you....and i think both ross and chandler were the steadiest of the group income wise... i dont think ross was ever unemployed in the series...i am not sure though....Great video as always!!!

Rachel is absolutely the best saver in the show- she was ready to have a child as a single parent still in the city and really didn't even factor in Ross cause she didn't know if he'd want to be involved. I will say I think outside of subsidizing Joey and Monica's wild spending habits I think Chandler is also really great but he's got some expensive friends.

Ross had a kid and lived by himself the whole show (besides the small period living with Joey and chandler) Rachel was roommates with everyone throughout the show. And his second apartment was pretty nice. So I think it was more Ross and Chandler because they hardly were struggling financially throughout the 10 seasons. Chandler being financially stable enough to loan money to Joey and Ross giving money to Monica. And even tho Chandler “loaned” thousands of dollars to Joey he still had savings. Which would mean he’s really good at managing his money because Chandler was basically spending money on Joey as you would a kid.

She focus on how organized she "look" and not on her behavior, Monica invested based on letters she likes, wanted to spend all savings on her wedding, had unreliable jobs during the first seasons and borrow money on the show.

As for Monica: During the show she invested in stocks but gambled around, became addicted and ultimately lost all her money. And during another time when she was unemployed she went through her emergency fund/savings and wanted to ask her parents for money but when she tried to ask them they said she probably wouldn’t need any because surely she put aside a percentage of her monthly income

I'm not sure Monica has the best financial habits, When she lost her job she had to borrow money from Ross which would indicate that she didn't have enough savings to get her through that tough time. I would say Ross had the best financial situation. He was always employed with good paying jobs, and despite his divorces, he still managed to support himself quite well. And really, I think only the first divorce impacted him financially considering the other two happened so soon after he got married. Just my two cents 🙂

No offense, but i kinda got feeling you either brushed thru the show or never watched it and found all the info somewhere else. Some events that show how finacially good/bad and stable/unstable are missing. Like Chandler having saving account that had great sum of money on it that was later used as ground payment for the house, or all the times monica was caught not having any savings. Plus, Pheobe never inherited house, she lived in two bedroom apartman with her grandma, she had a roommate Denis, at one point Rachel.

There is a scene in one of the episodes where they all say thier bosses hate them and one of the characters (I think joey) mentions that its probably because its 11 am on a thursday and they are all here, hanging out at the coffee shop instead of at work.

I have a prenup, it wasn't awkward for us because we have always had an open and honest relationship with our finances. My husband has worked really hard since he was 19 and I don't think that it's fair that I get half of it because I didn't work for half of it. We have property in both our names and we keep good records of what we spend and what each contributes.

Semi fair point. But ultimately you're comparing two different scenarios. I don't think Carrie's rent controlled apartment was passed down to her. Whereas Monica's apartment was under her grandmother's name. If her grandmother has lived there decades before Monica took over, the incremental rent increases would realistically be quite low. Maybe not $200 a month low, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was less than what Carrie paid for her apartment. I know of people who have lived in NYC their entire lives and even today their rent tops out at $1000. So how much a tenant pays would largely depend on when their lease began because the rent increases were so minute. So yes I agree that $200 a month seems unrealistic even for a rent controlled lease that has been active for decades but I wouldn't compare it to Carrie's rent controlled lease because she had lived in NYC for a much shorter time than presumably Monica's grandmother and then Monica after (remember, Monica wasn't legally the lease holder) @@tacobellbeefburrito

I’m so tired of people on CZcams acting like we don’t make it in life because we don’t have the right mindset when others have millionaire parents, connections and jobs handed to them as soon as they feel ready to work. HUGE thing you left out with Pheobe, it was revealed in one of the later seasons that she had "sold out" and took a job as a masseuse in a spa chain. She was likely doing fairly well after that.
Also, Chandler was clearly #1 when he revealed how much he had been saving for their future and Monica wanted to spend ALL of it for the wedding. (she later changed her mind)
I bet Joey was probably also kindly supporting his agent Estelle giving her a big percentage, given that he and that paper eater were her only clients.
Monica didn’t seem to be investing. She ended up playing the stock market at one point when she was unemployed and didn’t seem to understand it at all.
Chandler drained his savings account at one point to buy the entertainment unit and chairs and another time for his and Monica’s wedding. Chances are chandler and Monica started over financially after their wedding when they were older and smarter and wanted to buy a home and have children. I’m assuming they would have gotten advice from Monica’s parents at that point or reached out to an advisor because they made really impulsive financial decisions throughout the show.
One thing I think is missing from the analysis is when Monica actually did invest in the stock market (including, famously, in the ticker ZXY).

I knew people on the upper west side I the 1980s in somewhat comparable living situations to the Seinfeld characters. Kramer was obviously ridiculous, but the point of his character is that he somehow always falls bass ackwards into money. He, Newman and Jerry have implicitly been in the same buildong for 10+ years so should benefit from rent control. Jerry is supposed to be not Jerry the hit sitcom star, but stand up comic Jerry, who apparently plays comedy clubs in Dayton with up to 50 people in attendance, but has money to burn on new cars, which is pretty unbelievable. The most implausible character is probably Elaine, who has crappy jobs but somehow affords nice one bedroom apartments.

Idk if this is relevant or not, but as we rewatch the show, husband and I could not stop counting how many groceries they have and almost never use. Specially Joey, who never cooks but has a full pantry. I also love to stop and look through Monica's pantry, full of italian/foreign products (makes sense bc of her job, but also very expensive to have). Plus the fact they are always walking into each other's fridge and taking some fancy water, beer, orange juice and what ever.

During her season of unemployment, Monica actually addresses that she's been putting money away into savings for years to her father, but that she's now drained it all. She pushed to the last possible moment which I believe was pretty part into the season, so you hit the nail on the head there.
Edit: Well technically, she doesn't tell her dad she drained it. She's embarrassed to do so.

On the divorce thing... who is left financially destitute after a divorce really depends on where you live and how much you make. I have male friends who's wives had full affairs, even bringing the kids around the guy they were cheating with. Because this is a no fault state, her behavior was not apart of divorce proceedings and it was all but guaranteed that the woman got custody of the children- regardless of the fact that the kids wanted to live with their father. With multiple children, a man can expect to pay $3k/month in child support and alimony. Prenuptial agreements are not iron clad and are thrown out by the judge often.
I won't run on here, but there are absolutely disadvantages to being a man seeking a divorce. I suspect I have a difference of opinion here because I am a but older and have actually seen plenty of my male friends and coworkers go through this.

@@katc2040 in my country, we've something called divorce by mutual consent, basically the couple's saying we wanna part ways for xyz reasons, could be as simple as lack of love to cheating. it's more civil and quick, usually u get it in 6 months, quicker if the court thinks fit.
when I hear no fault divorce, that's how my brain translates it. so, i *think* I'm aware adultery could be a factor in no fault...my ques was, why choose this "more" civil ground when you can do all the blame game, since that could affect the alimony and maintenance in ur favour. bc if you're being civil with ur partner, court's gonna interpret the law in the literal sense....that's in women's favour. proving her guilty can give the court a means/ reason to re-evaluate the provisions.

It’s strange that you would pick Monica for number 1. Anyone who has seen the show has seen her be very irresponsible with money. What comes to mind is her guilting Chandler into spending his life savings on a $100,000 wedding. He wanted to use his savings more practically but gave in to Monica’s desire to have the “perfect” wedding. She also played the stock market based on what letters she liked best in one episode, losing quite a bit. She also was prone to betting money (and losing) on petty things like card games. She also didn’t have any savings when she lost her job, even though her parents encouraged her to have a rainy day fund. She also allowed an identity thief use her credit card to make purchases. So I’m not sure Monica was the most responsible person with money. ETA: Monica does eventually agree to have a smaller wedding and not use up ALL of Chandler’s savings for that purpose.
I recently was in a car accident, no one was hurt but the car was considered totaled due to where the damage was and the fact that all the air bags deployed. Me and my partner saw it as a blessing we are now free from our $600 monthly payment and $120 insurance.

Interesting analysis! You should do Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark, but basically use the vid as an exposé on the (frightening) reality of billionaire power.
Rather than focus on what tech or luxury items are *on screen* in the Batman movies, maybe focus on what *isn't* on screen.
For example, you could give real-world examples of billionaire industrial or political influence. "Here are some stats on industry / issue X before and after Y billionaire decided to get involved". Or focus on a few billionaire supply chains (the superyacht and shadow-yacht industry comes to mind).
Thesis basically boils down to "imagine how much of a difference Bruce Wayne could've made if he'd used [real-world billionaire apparati covered in the video] to fight crime, instead of his fists".
That sort of thing. Basically you reel in viewers expecting you to cover Batman tech, and instead you shellshock them with a basic understanding of how much power and influence billionaires wield in our society (and how much of a positive difference they could make, if they focused any amount of effort on the betterment of their fellow man).

I would LOVE to see a financial audit of the whole Brooklyn 99 team, but especially with Jake! I think it would be particularly interesting, considering the huge character growth throughout the show, especially with Jake and Amy. Also related to Brooklyn 99, I would love to see a commentary style video on Amy's approach to the Marie Kondo method in S6, E7. Again, I think it would be really cool because her views and opinions change so much throughout the episode.

Monica is way low. You must’ve missed the episode where she got fired from her job and had to admit that she wasn’t saving 10% of her paycheck as Ross and Monica’s parents had told them.
She is also a giver. She loves to give gifts, even if they’re just baked goods, but baked goods for the whole building? Plus, those ingredients add up.
Finally, Chandler had plenty of extra money saved up, but she used it for the wedding.
Don’t forget her OCD and the cost of all those cleaning supplies. She washed a whole street of cars once.
I think the difficulty Chandler Monica were talking about when he quit, his job was not wanting to break into their savings. They were saving up for potential adoption or IVF.
I think it is Chandler savings that kept them afloat. They were able to purchase that house in the suburbs at the end of the show.
Part the way through and have to say I disagree about Joey's spending being relatively stable (though you did mention impulsive spending). When he was doing well in Days of Our Lives he blew his money on rent for a fancy apartment and spent on a lot of crazy expensive home décor for it. In later seasons we see him accidentally win a boat in a charity auction and he decides to keep it even though he can't afford it, choosing to make monthly payments towards it etc. We only see him start to do better with money once or twice, such as the clip you showed where he lent money to Chandler and Monica

This might be more of how the show portrayed working in academia than your audit but there is a lot more to consider.
It's never said if Ross had his grad school funded or if he had to pay for it. If he had to pay for it, he likely has loans. Having gone to school in the late 80s/early 90s granted that would be a lot less debt than today, but still. Even if he had a graduate assistantship or something of the like, he probably wouldn't have much if anything in savings towards the beginning of the show because those salaries barely (if even) cover living expenses. All those years in grad school meant no retirement savings either.
You also forgot he did not get that professor job until later in the show and you cannot use a blanket average for a professor salary because it varies greatly by department and school. I don't remember if we know what school he worked for? But he was probably making a lot less than 70k as a paleontology professor in the 90s. One does not just become a tenured professor either. He would have been "tenure-track" and once he received tenure he'd get a decent pay raise. But he's always hanging out with his friends instead of doing research so no way he would ever actually do enough to get tenure (probably the most annoying thing about the show to me is how Ross just gets a professorship like that).
For at least the first few seasons Ross works in a museum. Museums do not pay well. They are normally if not always non-profit institutions reliant on grants and loans. I don't remember how many seasons he had that job but that should also be factored in.
Not sure where you got the information on benefits being good for academic jobs? That again would vary greatly between schools so it cannot just be assumed.

Uhhhhh Monica clearly didn't save for a rainy day. She had to borrow money from Ross. And she invested in a stock just because it had the same initials as her, and then proceeded to spent all of her money on the stock market in spite of being unemployed. I think money was one area where she wasn't very organized.

She definitely lived in an apartment that she inherited from her grandmother after she died. Plus she met her birth mother later in the series and she seemed to be well off too

There’s an episode early in the show where Monica loses her job and when her dad finds out he asks “how much of each check do you put in savings?!” And she quickly replied “30%”

I was afraid you'd bash my favorite characters, but I'm glad you didn't go all negative.
It is amazing to think that money calls money. On the top 3 there are people of the same family. If you switch Chandler and Ross you get 2 siblings on top. Then 3 and 4 you get a spouse of the sibling and the mother of the child of the other sibling. Other thing: the 2 on bottom are the only ones that come from poor families and didn't get to study to have sturdy carreers (because studying is expensive)
Joey had a spin off series that took place after the events of friends, looked like he was pretty financially comfortable in LA.

Regarding Chandler's lack of boundaries, you missed when he agreed to pay for Monica's wish of extra expensive wedding when it was discovered that her parents had not saved to pay it themselves, and also the episode of the boots Monica wanted but she couldn't walk on.

Phoebe (boo-fay) had a career as a massage therapist through the entire series. She had a ton of side hustles and businesses like catering with Monica and doing work as an extra on TV for Joey’s show. She also married into money when she Married Mike, whose parents are super super WASP old money wealthy.

Love these videos. I know they take a ton of work. I will say your estimate on what Rachel spent on clothes was GROSSLY inadequate. Definitely well into the 5 figure range after the first few seasons.
One thing I'll say to mitigate Rachel's apparent fashion overspend is that she works in the fashion Industry. So not only will she receive discounts, she probably knows when all the sample sales are happening and where the outlet stores are so she can go along to nab herself some bargains. My friend is a designer and he's often forwarding me emails about sample sales for brands like Reiss and Ted Baker.
@@rix16 that’s very true, but I’m not sure it would cover all that spending. But it would definitely reduce it. Plus, in the early years she was shopping at Bloomingdale’s like it was her job, and she didn’t get a discount there and she was still a waitress.
Well, it is apparent that you never watched the series; you couldn't pronounce the names. Monica as number 1 is also a dead give away. There was a complete episode about Monica's absolute ineptness with money -- she saves nothing and has no safety net, she had to borrow from Ross (who saves 10% of his gross income and puts it into savings) who can't because it would screw up his budget so she has to go to her parents. None of the friends invest or save and this is stated several times. For their wedding, Chandler cashed out his entire 401k of $47,000 to pay for all of Monica's over-the-top bridezilla-ness, Monica thought this was expected. The Friends are awful with money, with the exception of Ross (but your point of his divorces and children is on point) and have no responsibility. Ross would be #1 and the other five tied for last.

23:00 I would love to believe this but this article factors in impacts that arent purely financial. Unfortunately the truth is the current divorce laws are outdated. They need to be updated to reflect dual income couples which is quickly becoming the norm as opposed to single income when things like alimony and division of assets made more sense.
