    This is, I think, the f*ing best amp and cab comparo I've seen. I wouldn't have thought that, even with the same speakers, how different the cabnets would sound... and how the same the amp heads did! I learned something today boys... re-thinking some gear here... Metal!!!

    I really have to say, that I prefer the ENGL cabinet. Somehow it has a "deeper" sound than the others. Best combination in my opinion was the Marshall head with the ENGL cabinet. What an awesome video anyways, just high quality content:)

      I think the ENGL was too much for me; but I think the best sounds were Marshall + Mesa cab, and Marshall + ENGL cab, and right behind Mesa + Mesa, and Mesa + ENGL cab.
      I think the ENGL cab gives you the extra punch, and of course the sound in the room would be totally different, but I think my favorite was Marshall + Mesa cab :)

      Careful what you playback through. I played this through my excellent car stereo system. Mesa Cabinet was slightly better than Engl cabinet with a bit more headroom. Both cabinets sound good though.
      Yes Engl amps are good but I prefer the ability to have less compression which is really impossible to dial out of an Engl. I would bet adding compression to the Mesa would surprise people. Too me the Mesa is more versatile. The Engl gets that certain sound without the need of pedals though. I can see where people prefer it. But if you play a multitude of genres, it is hard to beat a Mesa Roadster or Roadking II. The Mesa Badlander is great for modern Metal though.

  • @baconfirre
    @baconfirre Před 3 lety +21

    My own theory is that while yes, 80% of the sound comes from the cabinet I think the cabinet is a filter that you get used to hearing a guitar sound through. I think that's why once you find a cab or impulse you really like anything can sound amazing through it and then every other cab or impulse just sounds wrong in comparison. I theorise that the cabinet you end up having the most real life experience with is the one you get used to and thus keep coming back to it. I think that's why a lot of metal guys love Mesa cab's so much, most of us buy one pretty early on and just get used to it. For me I used and Orange for most of my founding years and everything; to me, just sounds 'right' through and Orange cab or impulse.
    I'll used an analogy of colour grading and film. The cabinet is like the colour grade that sets the mood of the scene while the amp head is more like the actors in the film. The actors can change their emotions and actions scene to scene, but the colour grading always invokes the same mood where-ever it is used.

    This is an interesting video, and my favourite cabinet was the mesa. But my experience is, that in a band context, with drums and bass beside you, everything can be different. Frequencies that you like, when playing an amp alone, can be the frequencies, that get lost when the bass is playing. And frequencies, that are too agressive, when playing alone, can be the ones that keep your guitar sound from drowning in band context....... Never ending story

      Would be more interesting to see the Road King against the Badlander.
      The RK has 4 6L6s and 2 EL-34s and you can assign 2 6L6, 4 6L6, 2 EL-34 and 4 6L6+2 EL-34 per channel.
      So it would be easy to compare it to the Badlanders since they ship with EL-34s.
      You can throw in EL-34s in the Roadster but you can’t have both types at the same time.
