  • Looking to try some shmups on Switch but not sure where to start? Here's a collection of ten games that will provide you with both variety and quality.
    Note: This is NOT a top ten best shmups list. These games are chosen to give a wide ranging experience - but of course, they are all excellent anyway.

    So, as of a few days ago, I rekindled my love for shmups and been really enjoying your videos! I also am a Switch owner, so this video in particular was a great resource for me. Thank you!

    I would recommend Sega ages fantasy zone for the switch , I played it back in 1987 when I was 11 years old on the Sega master system and to this day it's still my no 1 shoot em up of all time!

    SoS, I love your content! I've only recently started getting into shmups, solely playing Rolling Gunner as my first ever shmup. I have a video suggestion for you! I did a decent amount of reading on shmups and general shmup strategies and concepts. It would be really neat if you could maybe put some basic concepts and strategies into a video form. You can maybe showcase some basic bullet patterns. For example, when I was starting out I didn't realize that some bullets are targeted to my position at the time they were fired out. I didn't realize that if I just moved a millimeter over to one direction that I would dodge the bullet stream. Little concepts like these would make for a really cool video I think. You could even share how you approach a new shmup and how could new players go about tackling their first shmup. Anyway, just a suggestion! Keep up your hard work!

      Thanks a lot!
      As for your video suggestion, 2 things:
      1) I love the idea and if such a video existed, I'd watch it in a second.
      2) I am not, unfortunately, the person to make such a video. Neither my shmup nor video-making skills could do it justice. Maybe one day in the future...
      Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for this video, I actually bought some of the games you listed here!
    I'm only recently starting to really appreciate shmups, but I had a bit of a love affair with Steredenn recently. That got me started playing newer stuff, like Devil Engine and Black Paradox. Your list helped me broaden my horizons, so thanks again!

    • @ShmupsOnSwitch
      @ShmupsOnSwitch  Před 4 lety +1

      I don't think Devil Engine was out when I made this video, but it would definitely be one for consideration.
      Steredenn...I honestly don't know why I didn't include that. Awesome game, very unique and should be in here. Could have replaced Shikhondo.

      Don't second-guess your selections! I bought Shikhondo after seeing it in your video, and it definitely deserves the attention you gave it.
      Steredenn, though...that one could have a video all its own. Like, if you don't love shmups, you *will* after you play Steredenn. Thanks again for your guide; I look forward to browsing through some more of your content!

    Nice, you have a very good taste for shmups (except for missing the current Holy Grail of Nintendo Switch 16-bit stg Thunderforce 4)! Out of curiosity, please make a top 10 list for Switch shmups 😁

    • @ShmupsOnSwitch
      @ShmupsOnSwitch  Před 5 lety +4

      Thanks!
      Thunder Force IV was very, very nearly on there, but I think my reasoning was Darius filled that gap. However, looking back, there are a lot of verts and maybe Thunder Force should have replaced Shikhondo. Certainly it's the better game in terms of quality.
      I may well make a top ten one day, but there are a bunch of shmups hitting the Switch in the coming months that could stake a claim - so I'll wait till I've given them a try.

      Even now, I'd still call it the most underrated shmup on Switch.

  • @BOBSMITH-YouTubeStoleMyHandle

    Nice video. I have a video suggestion. Please talk about the differences between the Psikyo Collection series in Japan, and the new Psikyo Shooting Library series that is soon to release. I don't know if its totally worth it to rebuy these games just to add the 3 more titles. That said, Samurai Aces from Vol1, and Tengai from Vol2 aren't on the new Library series so i guess you have to get them all if you want every SHMUP physical..... Frustrating

    • @ShmupsOnSwitch
      @ShmupsOnSwitch  Před 5 lety +3

      I'm actually thinking of making an overview video for the Psikyo games when the current Vol.3 comes out end of May.
      The physical situation is certainly a bit confusing so I'll try and address that in the video.
      Thanks for watching!

    Hi! I'm really new to shumps, well...I guess you could say "not very good," but can you please suggest a shump that is for beginners or shumps that I can keep going throughout the level if my ship gets destroyed? I'm trying to play a lot of these games, but it seems if I get hit, I have to start the whole game all over again (Gradius, R-Type, etc) and I don't want to do that. I want to continue progressing through the level and the entire game even though my ship gets destroyed. Any suggestions please? One's on the Nintendo Switch. Thank you for your time and I enjoyed your video.

    • @richardjames1506
      @richardjames1506 Před 4 lety

      Sounds like you got a bit unlucky with the shmups you tried - actually the majority allow you to continue from exactly where you died.
      I'd recommend Ghost Blade as a good beginner shmup and ESP RaDe for something more serious but also of higher quality (both came out after I posted this list, and you can find reviews on my channel).
      Thanks for watching!

    I just want to say danmaku unlimited 2 is very good on Android, if you have a 21:9 phone. You can set it to classic screen size, and then you have a giant black box under the game screen which means you don't have your finger all over the screen and you basically have 1to1 movement

  • @nimbylive
    @nimbylive Před rokem

    All great games. However, if you are new to SHMUP's I would not start with Ikaruga or Gunbird 2. They are both brutally difficult. Amazing games in their own right, just tough.

  • @maxyliano
    @maxyliano Před 2 lety

    Hmm Darius is awesome, but I don't think it's for everybody (especially with that price tag). I could recommend Aerofighters 3 (or Sonic Wings 3) from the ACA, which is really cheap. Also, this is an old list so there are tons more now! I still need to get Mushihimesama and DDPR.

    The Psikyo ports to switch are awful
    They have unplayable amounts on input lag so do quite a few other shmups, only M2 can be trusted with ports in my experience

    • @jasonmartinez5116
      @jasonmartinez5116 Před 4 lety +2

      Zerodiv was an indie studio, that's why they might be bad on your end. Imo the Psikyo ports played perfectly on my end, portable mode may help since its less input lag.

    • @SPM_STG
      @SPM_STG Před 2 lety

      @@jasonmartinez5116 The lag is there even if you don't notice it (and it makes you fail way more, when you shouldn't). I didn't notice it at first but after spending more time with Psikyo games on MAME I can't go back to playing them on Switch. Simply put, I can't 1CC the games that I can 1CC on PC due to the ports' input lag. With that in mind, I've still put around 100 hours into Psikyo games on Switch, they're still fun (but some are terrible when you want to perform well, like Strikers II and Dragon Blaze. Others work better like Tengai and Zero Gunner 2-)
