    Lots of great points here that I think are all completely true.
    One major aspect that you *don't* mention for some reason, despite touching on their incredible consistency, and which I think probably plays a bigger role than anything else, is that they kept making this genre for over ten years after basically every other company stopped making them.
    Cave were not just prolific, but they were prolific while NO ONE ELSE were. When Cave were at their strongest, there were no Psikyo, no Raizing, no Takumi anymore. They were simply *the only ones* for a such a long time during which the internet shmup community on the other hand was at its most active. It makes sense that they were impossible to ignore, when they were also the only source of genuine contemporary hype.

      The Electric Underground And they are technically still standing, considering literally every other company has either become functionally dead (Treasure, it's now Maegawa himself) or has folded/gone bankrupt/merged. I believe Cave has gone dormant due to them needing to face the reality of arcades: they are fundamentally changing, and dying out even in Japan albeit gradually. 2020 will hopefully be the year where they start making new things, and returning to their old self; if they were dead, then they wouldn't bother with ShotTriggers ports or having the official Twitch channel broadcast as often as it does.
      If Cave was dead, then they wouldn't be doing anything...but it's obvious that something is still there in the company.

      @@serraramayfield9230 Incidentally I feel like nowadays there's a big indie genre that Cave could easily attach itself to because it shares a lot of DNA with shmups: the super difficult roguelike - most games may of course differ in the mechanical details but there are IMO a lot of parallels eg with something like Dead Cells or Rogue Legacy - just like traditional shmups, the games can be hard as nails, you have to develop strategies and dexterity, and playthroughs tend to be short but constantly exciting and unforgiving. Now imagine a Cave shmup where you can collect permanent upgrades etc for reaching certain scores, or maybe there are multiple stage branches or different meta strategies - I could see something like that totally taking off even among more mainstream players.

    - fantastic art style (always unique, detailed and colorful)
    - intricate enemy placement that perfectly complements the complex, intuitive scoring mechanics
    - the genre defining scoring mechanics
    - gorgeous, smartly designed bullet patterns
    - (SH3 generation) the infamous slowdown, that gives you that "near escape" feeling, that turns the games into such intense rollercoasters.
    The only other dev i can think of with such impecable track record is Kojima Productions.

Big thanks to Manabu Namiki who composed most of Cave tittles! honestly im a casual shmup player who can't do 1cc in the most Cave games (im always ran out all of my life stock right into stage 3-5 at a first loop if it has a loop). but the music keeps me play the game that bring me the actual fun of gameplay!

    I just want all of the X360 CAVE library to be made available on Steam, same with M2's ShotTriggers games. Personally I love CAVE because they absolutely NAIL _game feel_ , only Nintendo "gets" game feel as well as CAVE does. I absolutely love CAVE and I'm sad their legacy is dying slowly... At least the devs have their own projects in Rolling Gunner and AKA to Blue, but it seems we're never getting a widely available version.
    Btw Mark, I would love you to talk about the topic of elitism and isolation of the shmup community... It seems many of the old school clan are focused on not getting more people to play their games. Authoritarian/totalitarian management of forums online and even censoring any talk around emulation when there's no other way to play most of these games. No, your 2,200 used and banged up PCB is not a reasonable way to buy and support the devs, yet some of the old school people feel the need to invalidate others just to validate their own spending on PCBs.
    Also wanted to point out you're doing exactly what I always wanted from the shmup community. You and Serflash are the closest people outside of this sphere can get to the depths of the genre and you both do things differently with approaches I enjoy. Keep up the good work, what you're doing for this community is second to none (and only Serflash is in your tier of approachability).
    Btw, thank you so much for your work on ShmupArch, you don't know how much and how many people you're helping get into the genre.
    Finally I wanted to suggest you create a Steam curator page, that way we get to follow new shmups in the scenes when we follow you there (same goes to Ser, both should do it).

    I started with Strikers 1945, and my first ventures into Cave games only took place this month when I bought Mushihimesama for Steam and tried out Dodonpachi on an arcade emulator along with Esp RaDe.
    I appreciate the fact that Cave games, while also requiring a bit of memo, don't try to kill you in cheap ways like a random enemy popping up or a sudden barrage of bullets way too fast for you to react to. Although I would say that memo-heavy games are rewarding on their own unique way compared to the Cave style of inching your way around hundreds of bullets.
    Finally, I agree so much with DDP being a combination of danmaku and also a bit of the classic shmup feel. I like that balance a lot, which is why I hope it gets ported sometime in the future.

But it is one of the reason stellavanity, akashicverse and valhellio are by far my favourite doujin shmups although the steam release of hellsinker sure pushed the game a lot. The devs or akashicverse even released demos of their next games united direction and scarlet grazers. and this one is very different to how they approached the games they released earlier.

    I’m a casual player but I started with Cave. I love the design and detail in the enemy ships and bosses of the DDP series, Ketsui and Dangun Feveron. Also it may seem small but the explosion sprites they use with shrapnel flying off after you beat a boss or a medium sized enemy really adds to cave’s signature graphical style in my opinion. Even if you are not that great at their games, they are beautiful 2D works of art with pretty awesome music as well.

  • @davy_K
    @davy_K Před 4 lety +4

    Switching between shot styles which is a feature of many Cave games can create a really satisfying feeling. In something like Futari it is especially so - for example - kill a big enemy with the laser and then switch to shot to suck up the gems - and then back to laser again... It just gives a certain feeling that is really satisfying. Their enemy wave layouts have a certain rhythm to them as well. Obviously there's the multi-layered scoring system with the risk/reward thing going on with combos, bee hunting etc that keeps the early levels interesting even if you are going for a survival 1-ALL in DDP say. DDP as a games series has evolved in a way that makes each game somehow familiar but new in a quite masterful way. The only other game series I can think of that has grown in a similar way is the 2D Super Mario platformer series. Each game can be played by someone new to the series, but someone who has played the previous games will feel at home while enjoying some new trick or mechanics that have been introduced. Add in excellent graphical art and soundtrack design and it's a combination that is hard to beat. You forgot to mention Muchi Much Pork and Pink Sweets. :)

I do like your comparison to the 2D Mario series, where they are all rock solid, but for their own reasons. Like it's completely valid to like World best, or 3, or even Bros 1. Both series have a strange black sheep sequel as well (Mario 2 and DDP 2: Bee Storm). Coincidence ...? X-D

      @Pizzoots Před 4 lety +2

      Opa-Opa ketsui’s scoring isn’t too confusing. Basically the closer you are to an enemy when you kill it, the higher level chip it will drop. The highest level is 5 and that’s at nearly point blank range. Once you get the chip, you can use your focus shot to get that level of chip from enemies at any distance. So if u picked up a 5 chip and kill enemies with focus shot, they will drop 5 chips as well. The amount of high level chips you can get from killing enemies with focus shot is determined by a timer that starts after you collect a chip with your normal unfocused shot. Once the timer is over, you have to get another high level chip using your unfocused shot. Ok maybe it is confusing when you try to explain it lol.
      TLDR
      kill an enemy at point blank range with normal shot and get the 5 chip, then use focus shot to kill as many enemies as you can within 4-5 seconds. Rinse and repeat.

    I wouldn't say Psikyo is necessarily lesser quality than Cave, but they were certainly much less creative. Psikyo games are fun, for sure, but between Strikers 1945 series/Gunbird Series/Dragon Blaze, I just feel like I'm playing the same game with different graphics.
    On the rare occasion that I try to "convert" somebody or introduce them to shmups, DDP is my #1 recommend. I feel like it's very close to perfection. It's in that middle ground: Clearly modern bullet hell, but also has recognizable oldschool elements as well. I realize that DOJ is usually considered better than DDP, but I just don't quite get it.. I find DOJ unapproachably difficult, almost to the point of frustration.
    Progear is one of my favorites, it's simply amazing. It's really the only shmup that I've ever really grasped onto and cared about the scoring mechanic, and have been able to get multiple extends which helped with survival. Also shoutout to Guwange and Dangun. Clearly a lot of experimentation going on around this time, and I think those games hold up really well. To be honest, I'm disappointed that there were so many sequels to DDP, it would have been really cool to have a Progear 2, Guwange 2, or Ketsui 2.

    Funny what you say about the Touhou appeal of Deathsmiles, since that is the reason it's the only Cave game that doesn't appeal to me at all.
    Also what you didn't mention: Additional to the actual gameplay, every Cave game soundtrack is absolutely on point and adds an additional layer to the gameplay.

      @TheElectricUnderground  Před 4 lety +1

      Oh man, yeah I did forget to mention the music! Don't worry though, I got something on the horizon all about that subject! ;-D Also, in regards to the moe appeal of Touhou, what's strong about Cave (as opposed to Touhou) is that if you don't like moe, the studio has a bunch of other games that offer different styles, but if you do they have Deathsmiles, which does appeal to that demographic. So Cave puts out a good variety of styles. :-)

      @DPop1979 You shouldn't compare Touhou and Cave in this part. Modern Cave games have very blatant and annoying fanservice while Touhou games have no sexualization at all (Tasofro games may have it, but just a bit).

    Coming from a fighting game dude … Cave to me … is the shmup equivalent of ArcSys…. Capcom & SNK defined the 2d FG genre, but then during the mid 00’s, when the originators abandoned 2d spritework and all went polygon 3d, Arc sys basically stood on the timeless art style of the Street Fighter Alpha series, and the Street Fighter 3 series, and the Marvel versus & SNK versus series … and evolved it with higher resolutions and better sprite detail and newer additions to the classic style.
    Cave catered to a dying niche that the larger industry totally abandoned, and fully commited to it during a dark period, showing an obvious and pure devotion, which was rewarded by the community, with the respect that commitment deserves.
    Now with many classic arcade genres coming back with a vengeance (beat ‘em ups, 2d fighting games, run ‘n gun, etc), I think we will see plenty of contemporary titles in the next decade, with classic 2d shmup gameplay & beautiful, non-spaceship, 4k/120hz graphics

    I haven't been able to fully enjoy any Cave games that I've played. I can totally see their appeal and I love the art style as well, but for me they just don't do it. I've never really cared about scoring, so for me I always had a slight preference for the older games that seem to be more about surviving through until the end. I am a big Touhou fan though, and Touhou 6 was the first shmup I ever 1CC'd

    I feel like having commentated runs be a feature in the game itself would be a great way to address the problem you mention at the end of the video, as well as to give genre newcomers some insight into the depth and purpose of the game. Have it be an unlock you get when you see the ending of the game, regardless of the continue amounts- either the developer commentates their own run, or they commentate with a playtester who did the run STG Weekly style. Or maybe you have multiple such commentated runs to address whatever level of play the player is currently at, so as to not spoil certain strategies and/or secrets for them. Maybe you have that run already loaded up in whatever leaderboard you set up right from day 1.
    Showing off the way your game is meant to be played, the advanced strategies possible within it, and establishing the score to try and beat in the game. Exact numbers are arbitrary, but beating a strong score sets a clear standard of skill.

    Speaking of Psikyo i always thought they leaned a bit more innovative than cave, Cannonspike (or gunspike) is one of my all time favorites from them but it's far from a pure shmup... they also did that horizontal 3d shmup called time something that had some interesting lock-on mechanics... i wish shmups market was more sustainable, i find them far more interesting than about 90% of the stuff that comes out now. anyway love this channel keep up the good work!

    Easy, they had the passion for the genre, years of past industry experience prior to founding Cave, a staff made up of some of the most talented STG industry veterans and then continued to execute for nearly 17 years.
    Also, Cave seems to have had a much higher willingness to experiment with design, gameplay and art direction, while staying true to the STG formula at the core.

    I think you have played too much dodonpachi and slightly lost your perspective if you think dodonpachi does not have too many bullets. If you don’t know how to herd them one has no chance. I watch your runs and think how crazy hard it looks. I agree with caves output. They are almost akin to a band pumping out hit after hit with something to suit everyone . Amazing. Ps .. I did not get a reply to my other comments, did you play dodonpachi maximum yet?. I’d love to hear what you think and lastly, I have come to realise that shmups are all about score, you would not play a football match and not keep score, scoring makes the games 10x deeper and more satisfying imo. I could write paragraphs but I better stop lol.

    Cave is the best company for bullet hell games. Everything in their games is well refined (sound, music, etc). People tend to love Bullet hell games because they give a false sense of big difficulty and accomplishment. lots of bullets, but all slow. It is not about reflexes, it is about methodical pixel dodging. I like bullet hell but i prefer a good classic shoot em up with fast bullets. Cave games tend to be similar. the big exception is dangun feveron. Love that game is the perfect cross between bullet hell and classic shoot em up.

    I still don't get it tbh. I like playing Cave games a bit but it feels like there's just nothing to them beside evading bullets. The shooting itself takes too much of a backsit. And I know from this channel that it's not always true, but it still kind of is. I will always prefer old school shmup, where the level design, weapon systems, shooting systems are much more rewarding to use, see, understand, and master.

    They had made some of the best videogames of all time, but CAVE as a company frustrate players by not making their games available in any logical consistency. As the PS4 starts to wind down for the PS5, only 3 CAVE titles have appeared on it. To play their games officially you have to have a graveyard of consoles and PC's lying around. Unless you bother with MAME, which means they don't get paid. I've given up believing they will ever get this right, coming nearly 8 years after their last proper shooter was released.
