    Also at 18:54 the woman mentions and grandchild from Tuttle and says the grandchild was a Childress. I believe last episode with the guy that killed himself in his cell, the officers on duty were Mahoney and Childress. Then the Sheriff mentions it.

    The line where the woman says, "Do you know Carcosa...?" gives me chills every time. Creepiest moment of the entire show, in my opinion. At this point in the show, it's probably worth you guys just googling "Carcosa." It's not invented for the series.

      i maintain that a lot of that rare monocultural community bonding that happened around the first season was underpinned by all of us learning about the eldritch cosmic horror references on wikipedia and having all that stuff bubbling around in the back of our heads week to week. gives the season a kind of metatextual supernatural spooky element that works really well and is memorable.

    Right before Rust talks to groundskeeper at the school, there's a shot of the schools signs through the fence. It says "School closed until further notice God is Working". For a few frames, a fence pole blocks most of the words and letters with "NOTICE KING" being visible. The shot is exactly at 51 minutes and 16 seconds of Episode 3.

    This mystery part of this drama is not really meant to be solved by the audience. Rust himself missed the scars on the lawnmower man because of (I think) dirt on his face and being a bit in shadow. I don't remember exactly, but the audience and Rust really can't catch it

    Great surprise to get this this morning! I was dreading having to wait until the weekend for it. One thing I think a lot of people miss is the Childress connection. The sheriff who handled that missing girl report was a Childress. The old woman said the young man who had the scars was a Childress. And, one of the two prison guards for the guy who "committed suicide" was a Childress. It's not just all Tuttles!
    Can't wait for the thrilling conclusion!

  • @Minion_of_Cthulhu
    @Minion_of_Cthulhu Před rokem +14

    In case nobody has given you the background, a lot of this season makes references to cosmic horror fiction:
    Rust's general nihilistic philosophy is right out of H. P. Lovecraft's works where humanity is irrelevant and the universe is uncaring and its mysteries largely unknowable, and actually delving into those mysteries is dangerous to both your life and sanity. Cults also feature prominently in Lovecraft's stories. More specifically, the philosophical aspect of the first season was inspired by horror writer Thomas Ligotti's essays in A Conspiracy Against the Human Race. Ligotti is a modern Lovecraftian writer whose stories often highlight the themes found in Lovecraft's work.
    Carcosa and The Yellow King are references to Robert W. Chambers's short story collection The King in Yellow. The King in Yellow is a fictional play within the stories which causes madness in anyone who reads it. It also refers to a supernatural entity, The King in Yellow himself. In the fictional play there is a scene which is performed as a poem where the topic is Carcosa, a strange land where "twin suns sink behind the lake" and "where black stars rise" (which is directly referenced in the show) and where "flap the tatters of the King". Additionally, in the stories there's a reference to The Yellow Sign which, while not fully described in the stories, is represented in the show by the strange spiral design that keeps appearing in connection to The King in Yellow and the cult. In the stories, the Yellow Sign may have originated from a non-human creator from Carcosa and anyone who sees it becomes susceptible to mind control by The Yellow King, hence the importance of the spiral in the show and its connection to the cult and its members.

    Watching this these when originally released and then browsing the TD subreddit to see all the details that I missed was so fun. When Rust first approaches the lawn mower man (ep3?), the camera pans so the Light of the Way school sign passes between Rust and the audience. A portion of the fence obscures the message so it looks like it says "notice king". Cool detail but I believe the director ultimately said this was unintentional. A few others like the word "mow" appears on the wall of the cell in the Rust/Charlie Lang interrogation. Marty and Rust have the back and forth about mowing the lawn. Great episode and great reaction!

    23:00 What freaked me out about this scene is my grandad told me about a case similar to this a few years before the show came out. The version he told me was a bit different. Agreed. If you watch it carefully while looking in a mirror over your left shoulder at exactly 2:59AM anywhere on the equator, you can see the VIN number on the lawnmower and it very clearly says *"YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO PUT SUGAR IN YOUR SPAGHETTI SAUCE"* If you document the fourth word of every episode that Rust says and then play it backwards, it also says this. I've only seen 18 reactors to True Detective Season 1 ever notice that, so it's extremely rare.

  • @bloodaxis
    @bloodaxis Před rokem +4

    So if you have knowledge about Ambrose Bierces, Robert W Chambers and HP Lovecrafts writings, hearing "The Yellow King" and "Carcosa" immediately leads you to think cosmic horror, which in my opinion ratcheted up the tension quite well and made me like it even more. There's a kind of supernatural feel to the whole season.

    One of the subtle things I noticed years after on rewatch: in ep. 5, LaDeux is rambling about how it was finally "time for the black star", and when Rust goes back to the school at the end there are black stars drawn on the broken glass framing him in. Then here, in ep. 7 when we see the case that broke Marty, there are black stars again, made out of black tape on the ceiling lights in the room where the child was murdered.
    Long shadows.

    Loved this show. The atmosphere is very unique and almost sets the tone for the show. Southern Mississippi/Louisiana along the coast can be a very scary place. I grew up around Natchez Mississippi and it’s got a very dark history along with the rest of the south eastern coast. Native Americans were killed off and pushed out, lots of crime around the ports and along the Mississippi River, the civil war etc. there are a lot of people who have passed away in suspicious circumstances or unsolved murders plus many who just disappear and were never found or heard of again. This show really captures how eerie and unsettling some of these small southern towns can be.

    I do hope you react to it though; it's more Noir than Mysterious, but it's great in its own way. A lot of people were disappointed that it lacked a certain something; maybe from having too many characters to be able to reach the depths of Season 1, but Season 3 regains a lot of that magic.

    Why did Rust decide to contact Marty now? I'm pretty sure he was coming directly from being questioned by the Staties, and felt he had to ramp up his investigation before they shut him down ... as he says Marty has access to resources Rust can't get on his own. Totally mercenary reason. Later, however, i think he starts to realize that he likes working with someone again ... something he used to think held him back(?).
