Filmed in Louisiana . On actual film, the color saturation is just beautiful.

i view the mower pattern as more of a nod to the spiral symbology referenced throughout the series rather than a circle but they both work. This is my favorite show ever and I'm impressed how well you've figured things out thus far. Most people miss the little things and I have to explain it to them lol. There's only a few clues that were given that I didn't see you point out. And Louisiana is like it's own country. A very weird place. Famous for swamps, alligators, and voodoo. This show nails it. And down on the bayou people really do just fall off the face of the earth. I'm 2 states over but dated a girl that lived there and I've been to New Orleans plenty of times. It's a wild place. The backwoods are super scary and there are crazy kinds of people down there. Swampfolk.

this is, without question, my favorite episode of the show. it's the most "lovecraftian" of the season, if that makes sense. you have johnnie joanie recalling a whole mess of incredibly upsetting things as "a dream", miss dolores having a deeply, deeply fucked up cult flashback, you have the sanity blasting revelations in the video tape (props for keeping in marty's little whimper before he starts losing it, i think that's really important in communicating just how wretched the video is). as someone who loves lovecraft and cosmic horror, this is like The Episode: making the connections, following the logic and realizing the terrifying scope of the villains. in lovecraft's works, the protagonist would probably just pass out after the video tape and then spend some time in a psych ward, but we have the world's most dysfunctional detectives in rust and marty, and we know they're capable of solving things, even if they solve things out of the barrel of a .38 revolver

Love how the reveal of the antagonist has mowed a "C" into the grass for "Childress."

This was filmed in and around New Orleans. McConaughey was already there filming Dallas Buyers Club and lost all the weight for that role.

The show isn't based on a book, although it was pitched to HBO as a kind of novel for the screen, so you could see it as a show with eight very dense chapters. Lots of literary inspirations, though. 'True Detective' was a true crime magazine that ran from the 1920s to the '90s. The names of 'The Yellow King' and 'Carcosa' are taken from 'The King In Yellow' by Robert W. Chambers, a book of supernatural horror, weird fiction and romantic short stories. And as I mentioned before, the philosophical dialogue regarding human consciousness, reality, morality, justice, nihilism, pessimism, religion, ethics, evolutionary biology, the nature of good and evil, is taken from the works of Thomas Ligotti. Plus some of the works of Laird Barron. There's one story of his in particular - Bulldozer - that mirrors this season's plot a little, but it's set in the 19th century. Features the line: "Time is a ring..." also, so make of that what you will. Also, you were warned - fleetingly - about the lawnmower man mere moments before Rust first speaks to him in episode 3 - check the letters on the sign outside of the derelict school, as Rust walks to him...

Seeing Marty and Rust get back together is like seeing the Beatles reunite before it was too late. You just can't imagine it, but suddenly there it is. Now it's time to see what song they're going to play...

Look at the spaghetti monster, riding the mower in circles ... a multigenerational taunt. Had to be intentional. I've toyed around with that pattern in the past when I've had to mow an acre of grass for a year, but never that small & tight. Otherwise I always mowed in long rows.
