I think the reason Rust didn't want to share what he was finding out with the two detectives questioning him because he didn't trust anyone connected with the people in power, therefore maybe with the Tuttles; on his way out of the police station he called them, "Company men."
Three things: 1. When we are shown something in flashback, we are seeing the objective truth. That doesn't of course mean we are seeing *all* of the truth, but they are events that happened. When Marty and Rust are talking, as you have noticed with the events at the Ledoux compound, their story and the facts don't necessarily match up. 2. This was something of a controversy at the time, but much of Rust Cohle's dialogue is heavily influenced (and in some of its phrasing, directly lifted) from the author Thomas Ligotti, who is considered by many to be the greatest living master of Cosmic/Existential horror fiction. He also wrote a book called The Conspiracy Against the Human Race which is probably the single biggest source of ideas for Rust's worldview. 3. The Yellow King/Carcosa references are to the Robert W. Chambers cycle of short stories, The King in Yellow, written around the end of the 19th century. After this series came out, it was briefly a best-seller, after nearly a century of obscurity.

Couple of the females in this episode were featured in other shows: Marty's oldest daughter plays Starlight on "The Boys", Rust's new GF played oldest sister Shirley on "The Haunting of Hill House", and Marty's middle daughter played Lizzie on "The Walking Dead". Lizzie was the girl who believed that walkers had feelings, which culminated in Carol telling Lizzie to "look at the flowers".

I appreciate how Rust later says "someone once told me time is a flat circle", not mentioning it was Ledoux. Of course that is to avoid revealing he talked to Ledoux, which would crush the shootout story, but I like to think Rust also doesn't want to admit Ledoux actually got to him with his ramblings about Carcosa
This season of True Detective was just Absolutely Outstanding. Showed what Hollywood was really capable of. Great Storytelling and Fine Performance by the Actors and Director. Keep watching, It just gets more incredible!
People were really hard on the following seasons of this show because the first season landed so well and became so influential on pop culture. While I don't think S2 or S3 necessarily usurp Season 1, they are absolutely nowhere near "bad". They're a different story, with different beats, different actors, in different environments, on different wavelengths, *yet each great TV...* Unfortunately a lot of people just really wanted more Season 1 antlers with an _[admittedly highly quotable]_ existential Cohle ranting about dimensions in a bleak and haunted Louisiana. Because so much of the vocal online community would seemingly rather be a part of the bandwagon, most reaction channels don't publish (or even personally watch) the subsequent seasons. I'd personally really enjoy watching through them again with a channel like yours. They're all compelling stories with excellent performances of challenging, and damaged characters with murky views about life, and Season 2 has my vote for one of the best soundtracks I've heard in a show in awhile, introducing me to an artist (that makes appearances in the show) that has become a mainstay of my personal playlists ever since the season aired. Although I will also concede that no intro song quite hits like Season 1's 😉 Besides, we have to get hyped for Season 4, which sees a return to the screen for our beloved Jodie Foster in the starring role, and a whole slew of other veteran talent.
Speaking of Stallone, you should consider Cop Land. I know this sounds rubbish (like Robocop to people that do not know movies). Copland is James (logan) Mangold with Stallone in a non-action acting role (his best) with Harvey Kietel, Robert de Nero, Ray Liotta, Robert Patrick (T2) and John Spencer (West Wing). It's really good and not a lot of reactions to it yet.
Fun Fact: the actor who plays Guy Francis who Rust interrogates in this episode also played Danny Fontenot in episode one. (The disabled guy on the sofa)
Rust making that guys murder statement innadmissable is some of the best writing I've ever seen. They don't sugar coat it, they don't spell it out. I even missed it the firsttime I watched it.
I think it's so cool that Matthew McConaughey has a whole monologue about space time and inter-dimentional beings seeing time in a different way... And Matthew McConaughey literally has that exact interaction in the end of Interstellar 😮
There was a deleted scene in this episode with Rust and his girlfriend. They split up because she was talking about settling down and having kids but Rust said he wasn't ready for that again.
I too was convinced Rust couldn't have done it...then I started thinking he has split personality or something and actually doesn't know his other identity is committing the crimes... No confirming or denying here, just saying how I felt when I saw this episode. That's what makes this show sooooo good; you really don't know what to believe or what is the real truth.

Season 2 was great and I'm in the same boat with said musician. I actually like season 1 less and less as time goes on.
