      I’d go the third best season of all time after Breaking Bad Season 5 and The Wire Season 4, but I’m not going to argue with anyone that think True Detective Season 1 is the best. I’ve watched it 6 or 7 times and it never gets old. This season was lightning in a bottle and it was never going to be replicated.

      I would say best single season show ever for sure. Breaking Bad has the spot marked for best show, best season, best episode ever. At least for me. But I love True Detective and will not stop tell people to watch it. I also really like season 2, it has grown on me over time. Of course it is not as good as season 1, but it is still good and very dark as well. Season 3 then tho really disappointed me.

    It wasn't an accident that Rust looked like Jesus in his hospital bed. He literally died and was reborn. And now he sees the world in a different, more positive light. One of the best shows ever made.

    • @Hexon66
      @Hexon66 Před 20 dny +1

      No, not an accident, but easily overly simplified and misconstrued. A writer uses contexts which the audience can understand, and this is one of the most iconic symbols. But the story transcends something as trifling as religion.

    @MrFish626 Před rokem +60

    There's just something about the mix between cosmic horror, pessimism philosophy and crime investigation that just works so well in this season. Rust and Marty's relationship being the thing that ties it all up

    "Time is a flat circle."
    "We will be in this room again and again."
    "Death is not the end."
    "Someone outside will look down and see our lives as a loop."
    "We will be doing this again, and again."
    And the bad guy want to transcend and escape the loop and the flat disk.
    What does that mean? It means the bad guys know, and Rust suspects, that they are just characters forced to relive the same events again and again, every time someone rewatches the series.
    Every time someone watches True Detective Season 1, Rust and Cole will be back in those rooms saying the same things over and over again, the killers will be back killing, and the victims will be killed again and again forever. Their "lives" are a loop doing the same things over and over again for our enjoyment. The flat circle is the DVD/Blu Ray disk people will be watching the series on (This was written before digital/streaming became so widespread). So some of the characters know they are trapped on the flat circle to do the same things over and over again.
    The bad guy hoped by killing enough kids he could transcend and escape from the "flat circle" and into the real (our) world.

    As I understand it, when the season ended, some folks were a little let down as they felt the show didn't fully go into and explore this bad group and all of its cosmic horror/lovecraftian references.
    I thought that it explored it all just enough, and intentionally so. What I got was that this group of evil bastards... They just wrapped themselves in all this mystique of "carcosa", "yellow king", "death is not the end" etc etc as a way of obfuscating their actual intentions: just wanting to exploit and hurt women and children.
    Just made me think of the phrase "the banality of evil".
    And I think that a lesser show might've ended with the entire network going down. And I like that here some of these members go unfinished and that FBI and other systems are protecting at least one of the perpetrators.
    But like Marty said, "we ain't gonna get em all. That ain't the kind of world this is."
    At least rust and Marty got their guy, and made things a bit better.

    • @pabloc8808
      @pabloc8808 Před 7 měsíci +3

      Them not taking down the entire ring fits the cosmic horror theme. This evil group is so big, so powerful, two washed up investigators could never hope to take them all down. Just like Lovecraftian protagonists only catch glimpses of the cosmos, and are unable to do anything with the knowledge because they can't even understand it.

    One thing I never see reactors bring up, is Cary Joji Fukunaga's direction. Out of all the undeniably amazing facets of this season of television (writing, acting), his ability to make Louisiana itself a character in the story is pretty much unparalleled. Anyway, it's been a fun ride watching you both experience this piece of TV magic. Thanks for sharing!

    Rust 100% wanted to die after dealing with the killer. Def why he removed that machete (almost never a good idea to remove things you are impaled with!!).
    So I love the choice of the show to not give him what he wanted: death. And having to live through this... It just broadens his perspective and reminds him of the love that existed between him and his child.
    Such a beautiful story beat

      Impaled, yes. But he wasn’t just impaled, he was also slashed leaving a big open wound. It doesn’t matter if he leaves it there or not. So no, definitely not the reason why he removed the knife.

    I don't know if this has already beend said, but the story surrounding the cult side of it is referring to the book The King in Yellow. It's a collection of short stories that are actually about a play with that name, when people read any parts of the script they will go insane. Several of the stories start with pieces of the script, that include masks, darkness, and Carcosa. It was published in the 1800's and is referred as being the first horror novel; also said to be the inspiration of H.P. Lovecraft, and his style definitely reflects that.

      The only real problem was the stereotypical off-camera shot to finish off the villain just as he's delivering a deathblow to the partner. A really tired cliché unworthy of the standard the show had set to that point.

  • @nati5088

    Carcosa is likely the ruins of a revolutionary era naval fort which had been converted in to a pirate cove. The tuttles/childress’s began their macabre family traditions likely about 200 years before the events of the story. Their traditions derive from creole/hatian/african voodoo practices as well as traditions clearly related to ritualistic practices performed by southern cults such as the KKK, hence the pointy hats/ ritualistic meetings in the middle of the woods. Louisiana is famous for its macabre spiritualism and ritualistic/idolistic traditions.

For example the police commissioner (the asshole in blue uniform from the first and sixth episode) has a very specific way of walking, hunched forward hands behind his back. Add in the fact that both recently found out they're brothers (Matthew McConaugheys mom had an affair with Woody Harrelsons dad) in part explains how they worked so well together in this amazing series.

    Both in Robert W. Chambers' "the King in Yellow" published in 1895
    Loved your reaction to the undoubtedly best couple of hours of TV.
    In other matters: When Rust recapitulates his NDE it sends shivers down my spine... back in 2008 I had one and it was.. very similar... it feels that someone must have written this who either had experienced this himself or had a first hand account.
    It is... right. In many ways it follows the pattern *I* experienced and not the cliché of "the tunnel" and so forth.

      I'm not sure about that "nothing extraordinary." The fact these uneducated inbred hermits are capable of pulling off and covering up this level of crime for so many years? I think it's open for speculation whether the people in this show are tapping into some deeper force or not.
      For one, Rusts visions which give him indications when he's on the right path, secondly all the deep psychological conditioning of anyone involved with the killers. It could just be brainwashing and secretly dosing with drugs.
      But none of this explains the huge portal that Rust sees in Carcosa. I took it as Carcosa was home to some kind of portal to hell or some other dimension which evil leaks through into this world.

    A partnership like theirs is almost like a Marriage, they fight and even hate each other but they will have each others back regardless of how much they claim they don't like each other. It would be cool to see them again in a new story and show some of the aftermath of this case but i doubt it'll happen as Nic Pizzolatto is not known for revisiting character's. The thing about Errol Childress was he was wanting what he called Final Ascension, a kill or be killed thing. He knew eventually someone would come for him that's why he kept calling Rust "Little Priest" He wasn't gonna let Rust & Marty kill him without a fight though and that was his way of reaching his Final Ascension. But when you're that crazy as he was it's not supposed to make much sense.

    I’d recommend looking at more about the cult because I was wondering about the rest of them at the end too. The original cult is mostly gone and this version is basically an offshoot of the original. Errol went rogue and did his own version of the killings. There is a lot more to it and it’s fascinating backstory.

      @@the_occasional1764 I found a lot of backstory on the True Detective subreddit and they collected the information from articles, interviews, etc. They have detailed breakdowns on the info the show gives us. The show gives us a lot of backstory if you look at all the info dumps frame by frame.

    Really enjoyed watching this with you guys, thanks! I guess I should say rewatching as I've watched the whole thing more than once and watched parts of it a lot. Loved your reactions and insights.
    I thought season 3 was good, although nowhere near as good as this. Didn't watch season 2. Of course the trouble with either season was trying to follow a masterpiece.
    Meanwhile, a season 4 is scheduled for sometime this year. It looks pretty promising, too. Being set during the 6 month long night of Alaska and having Jodi Foster, I'm most interested in seeing what they'll do with it. The trailer even briefly shows the spiral symbol that we know from this show. Will the Carcosa cult be involved?
    Anyway, thanks again. I really enjoyed it!

    I’ve seen this show multiple times and just this time thought that Rust wanted to die pulling out that knife. Most know you shouldn’t remove impaled objects. His desire was for it “to be finished” right there.

    Hey guys. Good to see you thoroughly enjoying such a spectacular production.
    I HIGHLY recommend, for one of your upcoming reactions, the Netflix / German series 'Dark'.
    Three seasons of the best Sci-Fi rendering of time travel you've ever seen.
    Hope to see it on here one day.

    15:50 The complex looks like a Napoleonic era fort. We have loads in Dover, England looking exactly like that. It could be earlier, I guess you might say colonial era.
    Confirmed - Fort Macomb built in 1822. Bang on.

    Well now we need that sequel where Marty and Rust get an apartment together. There's a great old play/movie called The Odd Couple where 2 opposite-type friends cohabitate and comedy ensues. This could be The Oddest Couple. 🤣

    You could completely skip Season 2. It just isn't as good as the first and third. Season 3 also loosely ties into the events of Season 1, which is very intriguing to say the least!

    Another fantastic bunch of reactions to an outstanding series! I'm eager to watch y'all watch The Boys next. Granted, it's also sick and twisted, but I bet it will feel like comic relief compared to the dark horror/mystery of True Detective. Cheers!

    So did you pick up on it in the last episode? When Rust told Maggie that it never set right with him, lying to Marty for her? I took that to mean they never did it. That Rust just let Marty believe it so Maggie could get back at him. Is that right?

    • @Hexon66
      @Hexon66 Před 20 dny

      The line was actually "It never sat right with me, then and it doesn't now, you asking me to lie to *you* about *him* ." Mistaken reading, or different meaning? It comes directly after she asks him if Marty can get hurt. The implication being that she wants Rust to lie to her *now* that he's not in danger. And that she did the same in the past, asking questions that she didn't really want answered honestly.

    I always wondered if the British accent was an homage to Jack the Ripper.

    • @Hexon66
      @Hexon66 Před 20 dny

      Not sure if they ever got a recording of Jack's voice back then. 😉 But probably not, as the accent wasn't local, and the primary candidates are either Eastern European or American anyway.
