  • 6/22/2019 - Milwaukee Road steam locomotive No. 261 returns to the Twin Cities and Western rails again for 2 excursions over the weekend of June 22nd. I only chased the Saturday excursion between Minneapolis, MN and Brownton, MN, but it was a blast! I actually haven't seen the 261 since 2006 when it was 3rd out behind the two IAIS QJs! It was great to finally see the engine running again, the chase was awesome, and the maiden voyage of Friends of 261's new E Unit, WSOR 101 (soon to be painted into MILW colors; this may have been the only chance to see it running in WSOR paint!), was pretty cool to catch too! So, without further ado, please enjoy my footage of MILW 261's Saturday excursion!
    Time-stamps:
(0:20) - MILW 261 leads the train out of Minneapolis at Kenwood, MN
(2:18) - At speed now, the train charges through Eden Praire, MN
(3:30) - Through the countryside at Augusta, MN
(4:53) - After a brief stop, the train starts back at Cologne, MN
(7:49) - Through Norwood Young America, MN. I accidentally boomped my camera while it was approaching, sorry for that haha!
(9:08) - Charging through more countryside near Plato, MN. This would be the fastest the 261 would lead the train today!
    (10:10) - Through Glencoe, MN
(11:43) - After barely arriving at this spot in time, 261 charges into Brownton, MN
(12:31) - Photo Runby at Brownton, MN. This would be the end of the line for the westbound run
(16:27) - WSOR E9A #101 leads the return trip east out of Brownton
    (17:43) - Through Glencoe, MN
(19:47) - Just outside Glencoe, MN after 261 took on some water. Robert would also give us some airhorn as the 261 passed our cameras on the rear!
    (20:53) - Through Bongards, MN
(22:10) - As we wait for the final shot of the excursion train just outside Minneapolis, MN, a westbound BNSF manifest passes with BNSF C44-9W #5341 w/ FXE power leading
(23:55) - The excursion train rolls under us and out of sight!

I was aboard this train during the Milwaukee Road Historical Association annual Convention as you chased it on Saturday. You might have gotten a shot of my head sticking out of one of the baggage cars as the consist flew by. I sure I was standing right along side of you while videoing the run by. My video is quite similar to yours. I'm thrilled to have found your work of this Milwaukeee Road chase, and I'll be forwarding the link to friends of mine in the MRHA. Thanks for publishing this video!

2019 sure was great for me since in August 2019 I went and visited the friends of 261 myself, got to see, touch, go inside 261's cab and take a piece of coal from her tender back home with me to my home state since I have family in Minneapolis, Minnesota which is where my dad grew up. Also I think that whistle on 261 matches her completely and I hope to see 261 again in 2020 for one of her excursions which my dad actually doesn't mind at all

Great footage! Love to see that 261 is running a lot these past years! I noticed the Killdeer birds chirping and photoboming your shot at 6:11 haha

Hello from Pennsylvania. Very nicely shot video. I’m not much of a steam fan (juice and traction are my taste), but after being inundated by the UP double-header steam extravaganza, here comes Milw 261 chugging across MN. I can’t tell you why, but I like the MILW locomotive much better: neater, cleaner lines, more simple. Just a better looking engine. Many thanks. CAS

Charles Shivoder It has a lagged smokebox which reduces the clutter around the front end.

Hi, very nice video! I was on the train that day. Just a quick note re locations...Kenwood is a neighborhood in Minneapolis, it's not a town. (BTW it's where Mary Tyler Moore's character Mary Richards was supposed to live in the 1970's "Mary Tyler Moore Show".)

I figured as much but I also thought it would be more specific than just “Minneapolis”, especially with another clip at a totally different location that could only be described as Minneapolis later in the video lol
      Thank you!

Steam fan from Hertfordshire, England. Is the line ,just a preseved line?No Amtrak, National Freight. No intermediate station e.g.Cologne.

It's an all freight shortline, which BNSF has trackage rights over, I think, and shortlines have always been extremely steam friendly.
