    Beautiful footage! This is one of the best videos, I've ever seen of 261! I think you chose the best spots to film the train from, to get the best views of it and the best Doppler effects! Great job!

    Nice video! I was lucky enough to ride on some of the Friends of the 261 cars two years ago from Emeryville to Minneapolis. Spent the majority of the daylight hours on the back platform of the Lambert's Point. Amazing!

    if they're gonna use a damn diesel on every steam hauled train these days they should at least use an F7 or some other vintage diesel

    • @NorthlandTrains
      @NorthlandTrains  Před 8 lety

      +TheBrantfordRailfan except Amtrak diesels produce the proper voltage of electricity for the passenger cars, plus, the trips are insured by Amtrak

    So are the diesels ever used as helpers, is there someone in the cab at all times? If so how do they synchronize throttles?

    • @NorthlandTrains
      @NorthlandTrains  Před 7 lety

      They do help on big hills going up and for dynamics coming down, there are people in the cab, though I believe that 261 has MU compatibility.

  • @robkrasinski6217
    @robkrasinski6217 Před 8 lety +1

    Do they let the people hang out the doors on #261 excursions on BNSF? NS has a closed window policy, no open windows or open vestibules permitted. That kind of sucks, because you can't hear the chuff and whistle very well from your coach seat next to a pane of glass. But, it's better than no steam at all on NS. I'm riding behind #611 on June 4 in Virginia for the very first time. I never rode any of the NS 1982-1994 excursions. I rode behind #765 twice in PA last year and a few years ago.

    • @NorthlandTrains
      @NorthlandTrains  Před 8 lety

      +Rob Krasinski open vestibules are allowed, as well as open observation cars

    • @robkrasinski6217
      @robkrasinski6217 Před 8 lety

      I wonder then why NS is so tight with their rules and do not allow any open windows or doors except for the train crew and in the tool cars where the crew commonly have the doors open with protective gates. The Fort Wayne tool car also has little windows that can be opened, as well as a red sliding door with a black door with three openings on the top behind it. Most tourist railroads have open window coaches and open observation/sightseeing cars. NS used to allow open windows in the old steam program through 1994 but banned the use of older heavyweight coaches after the 611 derailment in May 1986.
      The Dover Harbor is one exception, as it has been upgraded to Amtrak standards. It has been on some of the recent NS steam excursions behind 765 and now 611.

    • @NorthlandTrains
      @NorthlandTrains  Před 8 lety

      +Paul Hebert when 261 was restored in 2008-2013, they restored it to it's "as delivered" appearance, which, when 261 was built, did not include the MARs light, however, the Friends of the 261 still have the mars light and can easily install it when they choose (bolt on and attach wiring).

    • @NorthlandTrains
      @NorthlandTrains  Před 8 lety +1

      +NSNW11 Yes, BNSF is the only Class 1 that allows steam excursions in the area.

    • @6484373
      @6484373 Před 8 lety +1

      +Keon's Trains It really sucks that CP won't allow them to run down the Mississippi anymore now that Hunter Harrison is CEO, he destroyed the entire CP steam program. And I suppose BNSF won't let them run down the Mississippi because they have been having trouble with too much traffic. But the Hinckley sub is still a pretty line to run down in the fall, the only problem is that I'm too far away to see it :( Me and my dad used to chase it up and down the river every year, so its just sad that we're able to do it like we used to.

    • @NorthlandTrains
      @NorthlandTrains  Před 8 lety

      ExcessMean the folks at 261 are trying very hard to get CP to let them run again, maybe soon after Harrison's time at CP is over. CN also operates in the area, and could allow steam perhaps if convinced enough. but for now 261 is unfortunately limited

    • @milepostproductions5610
      @milepostproductions5610 Před 8 lety +1

      +Keon's Trains CN and CP are allergic to steam engines.

    • @NorthlandTrains
      @NorthlandTrains  Před 8 lety

      Blake Trafford - Mile Post Productions Not so much allergic is it is financially and insurance related, steam makes no money, never has, and the insurance risk is not what CN, CP or even NS now (they allow steam but don't sponsor it) want to take in

  • @conscriptanrssaws3086
    @conscriptanrssaws3086 Před 8 lety +1

    611 steam locomotive pulled cars more than 261 steam locomotive and 611 without diesel helper but 261 took diesel locomotive, Why?

    • @NorthlandTrains
      @NorthlandTrains  Před 8 lety

      +Conscript ANRSSAWS 611 was chartered and insured by Norfolk Southern, 261 is insured by Amtrak (hence Amtrak's locomotive, also used for passenger car electricity). Also, 611's debut was extremely popular, hence more passenger cars, 261 is not as well known as 611.

    • @regularguy7266
      @regularguy7266 Před 2 lety

      @@NorthlandTrains yes, plus Norfolk and Western 611 is a more powerful Northern, having 80,000 pounds of tractive effort, while Milwaukee Road 261 has just over 62,000 pounds of tractive effort. This means 611 can pull more tonnage than 261. However, 261 is still powerful because it operated on the New River Train in the 90s, and in that time, they had steam locomotives pull trains with 25 cars or more with no diesel assistance. 261 took this challenge and conquered it. In my opinion, Milwaukee Road 261 is the most underrated Steam Locomotive in the U.S
