    I wish my dad was still around to see these amazing machines that sharpen chains. We used to use the bar clamp file system and it was finicky, never could get it to work right. My bro has the same machine you do, what a great unit. I appreciate your vids Steve. Thanks

    Nice sharpener... Back many years ago when I heated with wood, I had six chains for my saw. Old guy around the corner sharpened chains for $1 each, so I did not even own a file. I just bought a cheap chain grinder a few months ago, and I have not tried it out yet. I have used one before, so should be no problem. Thank you for the video,Steve

      I always figured a chain sharpened on a grinder would last 2 or 3 times as long as a filed one. And files are note cheap any more either. Thank you for the reply, Steve

    I have hand filed my chains for 42 years, and I get them very sharp, and they last a very long time. My experience at the saw shops has been that they grind them living s+-t out of em and they need replacing after 4-5 sharpenings !!!!!! But, if I could get a solid sharpener at a reasonable price that was not Carber Brate quality I would likely try it. I need to look at this machine closer! Thanks for sharing!

      @@SteveRobReviews we sharpen them to remove the wear at our sharpening shop. If the wear is a couple thou that's what we remove. If the wear goes back 10 thou then that is what we remove. I would be creating more work for myself to remove more steel than necessary so the comment makes no sense. If I return a chain that still has wear then we are not doing a proper job even though it may cut better than before

    I use to do HVAC work and started using Coil Safe AC coil cleaner. It's environmentally safe and non corrosive. It breaks down most of the crud on the chain within a few minutes. Sometimes I hit it with a wire brush but most of the time just hosing the cleaner off the chain does the trick. I actually have a video about it on my business channel.

      For a few years I had my chains done by a local shop and was happy with the grind for the first few years, however the last two years, all they would do is just take meat off my mostly sharp chains, overheat the cutters and ruin the tempering, and roll the edges. I had several chains come back worse than they were sent in. I just recently got my grinder and am very happy with the results, none of my chains will ever be going back to the shop...

    I have a bunch of chains to sharpen. I can do it by hand - they are razor sharp and maintain really close to the original cutting profile but it takes a long time. Is there a machine that sharpens both the top cutting edge, (which you can see at the 6:30 mark) and the interior curved edge and gets really close to the original cutting profile? Like my files do? Most shops I've seen change the profile and they sure seem to dull much faster.
    I think the wheel would need to be at a very flat angle, or the chain would need to roll over a curved guide to expose the cutting edge more.
    Sorry if my questions are not clear.

    • @SteveRobReviews
      @SteveRobReviews  Před 3 lety +1

      This machine does all the angles you want . I do mine myself because I too have taken chains to a shop to get sharpened and as you can see I'm much further ahead doing it myself . This machine has already paid for itself for all the money I would have paid a shop to do.

      If you mean the shape of grind in the side plate, this can be influenced by the way that the grinding wheel is dressed / shaped. The rear adjustment / head position relatively affects the top plate angle, from vertical axis. The horizontal, by the front.

    couple ideas to add... buy chains in quantity of 10. use as you need. ...and save the dull ones till winter when you can sharpen on such a machine. good tip about not taking too much off....with that stone running you can ruin the temper at the tips if you grind too hard too fast

      FastWax FW1 works great as well. Even does a number against fingerprints and dust. My boat motor hasn't taken a single water spot after months of sitting in the shed and several days with water drops drying on it, just wipe it once with a soft towel and it looks as good as new (actually looks better than when I got the motor).

    You didn’t show the slide adjustment under the turret that gives adjustment to file incline angle, do you use this. I haven’t seen this adjustment on any other sharpner

    • @SteveRobReviews
      @SteveRobReviews  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm not sure what slide adjustment your referring to . The left/right swing of the chain only has a tightening knob to prevent it from moving.

    • @colzer28
      @colzer28 Před 3 lety +2

      If you have a look at the sharpener it has yellow gradients to indicate the angle in degree. At the front of the turret it moves to 35degreees left and right but if you have a look at the side view of the sharpener there’s a yellow strip under the turret that gives 0 to 15 degrees forward and backward. So if you loosen the big black knob under the turret you can move the turret clockwise and anticlockwise and forward and back. The forward and back movement emulates a file angle of 0 to 15 degrees

    • @SteveRobReviews
      @SteveRobReviews  Před 3 lety +1

      @@colzer28 Yes ok I understand now , absolutely you must set the angles to the specific chain or cut your own custom angles for different wood or cutting uses .

      @StefanSebregts Před 4 lety

      You swap out the wheel from the cutter wheel to the depth gauge/raker wheel (same wheel you shape for large chains). You can lower the depth gauge/raker on both sides of the chain in one pass.

Harbor Freight as bad as it is will get the geometry and angle back into uniform consistency although couldn't get it sharp. One of two strokes with a hand file afterwords get it into scary sharp. Jack this style does not have a tilting vise so it uses the position of the grinding wheel to do the same. I like to experiment with cutting angles as it sure makes a huge difference in performance compared to stock angles. On my small 35cc saw I dont change a thing but on my 73cc saw I can get quite aggressive on the cut :) Its a great machine to fine tune a cutting tooth and get it razor sharp edge. Cheers
