    I love the idea of “overly conscientious personality disorder”. That makes so much more sense. I hate misnomers. If the OCPD person doesn’t have obsessions and compulsions, it should not be called “obsessive compulsive” personality disorder-pretty simple. Misnomers about health conditions are especially unacceptable and irresponsible when it comes to empowering and helping patients/clients already struggling. I wish this would be officially addressed by the mental health discourse.

      I agree, I think the name is confusing and unhelpful. I know that sometimes it's been called Anankastic Personality Disorder which I think is more helpful in distinguishing it from OCD, but isn't quite as immediately descriptive to the average person in the way that Narcissistic Personality Disorder or Paranoid Personality Disorder are.

      Would the following apply? My brother works at the airport. There are people who will hold onto an empty Plastic container or newspaper until they can put it in a recycling container when most people would just put it in the trash when they are done with it??? I think my sister has this...

    I’m so happy that you point out that it doesn’t necessarily make sense for AvPD to be considered a personality disorder if it really is just a more severe and/or more chronic form of Social Anxiety Disorder. I see them both as just different points on the same continuum. I believe that calling it a personality disorder will discourage some people from seeking help, as it can contribute to stigma and make people feel there is something deeply flawed about them.

      I have both Social Anxiety and AvPD and I'm done with people that think "it's just the same thing but worse". No, it's not. There are some times when I don't feel socially anxious, I feel I should be comfortable with the person I'm with, but I still have difficulty interacting with them. They are different things, saying they are the same is like claiming shyness is the same as social anxiety.

      @@hnice5thank you... I was just about to comment this same thing. I have Avpd and it is completely different from social anxiety. It's not on the same spectrum at all. It's a delete thing. I do have social anxiety sometimes though but i feel there is a good reason that it is a complete different disorder and I don't have a problem with it being called a disorder.. yes I feel worst for having it but I'm thankful that it had been addressed and people are aware of what it is.

    • @hnice5
      @hnice5 Před 8 měsíci +2

      @@mobomba6206 Glad to know more people with this disorder feel the same way :). Sometimes psychologists just see it as one more theoretical concept from a book and proceed to argue about its existence while there are people who suffer it and most likely know it better. I can't count the amount of times someone said they were misdiagnosed with only SAD or ASD by their therapists or just depression. This PD needs to be studied so much more. Anyway, I'm happy to talk with someone else with AvPD! I hope things are going alright for you there. There is a way out, just have hope!

      I woule def disagree as someone with avpd it is def different than social anxiaty avpd is like ocd for your personality except the compulsion is to avoid and your mind will play tricks on you to get that illogical avoident result. Except its like all day everyday I would def say talk to people with avpd before just believing that it should not he a disorder because it gives me a basis and also the help for people with social anxiaty isn't always the same.

    • @LPSlight0
      @LPSlight0 Před rokem +4

      @@akatie888 Hey, having done a lot of research on this from experts in schizoid personality disorder, folks with schizoid DO want relationships with others, but due to early childhood experiences, detach in order to keep themselves safe from the perceived threat of others. In other words, folks with schizoid personality disorder are motivated by a salient need for interpersonal safety, which makes the inherently risky nature of interpersonal relationships too difficult to cope with, hence the extremely low extraversion. But once they feel safe, which usually takes a long-time, folks with schizoid tend to open up. This also further cements the idea that avoidant personality disorder isn't actually a distinct personality disorder in its own right, because it's core underlying difference between itself and schizoid is based on a false assumption of how schizoid personality disorder works. It may be best to view avPD as an extreme form of social anxiety disorder, or as an additional symptomatic angle to existing PDs, i.e. NPD with avoidant traits.

    As someone who has recently been diagnosed with AvPD, I don't find that much of an overlap with social anxiety. I have been screened for social anxiety before and was extremely fat from it. A lot of research of AvPD in the last few years, has shown that even though there is an overlap in people who are diagnosed with both, a lot of patients with AvPD have earlier been wrongly been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder.
