Episode 124 Manic Mechanic
One Wire Conversion on a Stock Ford Wiring Harness
We talk about how to set up a one wire alternator with a stock Ford wiring harness. We discuss putting a 1 wire alt on a Ford generator harness (1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964). We stalk about butting a one wire generator on a Ford Alternator harness. www.autokrafters.com/

I'm addicted to F100 trucks. I currently have a 68 that isn't charging & a 64 that isn't firing.
😐
They both have butchered wiring, although the 64 is much worse. Still, neither truck had their current issues when I bought them earlier this year. I'm glad their systems are so basic & I'm even more glad that my internet search lead me to your channel. I'm sure I'll be viewing more of your content.
Thanks!

You are welcome.
Hey Jeff, 6-8 years ago I Swapped a 3G onto my 68 Ranchero. I removed the voltage regulator and just made a jumper wire that plugged the two far end connections of the regulator plug. That kept my Idiot light from staying on. I was instructed to do it this way and it has worked...
Cool! Always consult the alternator manufacturer for these.
Good job Jeff, well explained...
Thanks Paul!
I run a DELCO 10SI. Easy to wire, looks great, works well even at idle.
Very nice!
How timely, I will soon be doing this same thing to my Torino. Great info as always!
Go for it!
@@AutoRestoMod I'll need a bigger alternator for my Starliner ......... for the custom auto sound and safety upgrades
Excellent, I'm about to do this
Thank you so much for this video
You are very welcome
Any chance you guys will do a follow up video on generator to alternator brackets? Loved this video, very informative! THANKS!
Already done! czcams.com/video/gpGsjyJ9gCo/video.html
Jeff, at around 8:00 you talk about the IVR. You may be interested to know that in the Ford Shop manual for a 69 Mustang says the Instrument Voltage Regulator has a continual "pulsing voltage with an effective average of 5.0 volts". There isn't a good way to measure it, because its pulsing DC, not constant DC, so they just say to look for a rapid pulse. Kinda like the doctor asking "nurse- does it have a pulse?" If it does, its alive.
Yes. And since it is analog it has a degrading signal that the newer solid state ones lack.
Good info
Thanks!
1 wire alternators have a small monitoring amperage draw waiting to sense rpm rotation to turn on...a master disconnect is recommended if the vehicle sits for any length of time.
Good point!
On my 62 falcon it was as easy as clipping the wires that went to the Generator off flush, and then adding a wire from the alternator to the starter relay.
Good deal!
Did I miss what you said to do with the field wire on the back of the alternator? Is it not used. Thanks
I rewired my '47 Lincoln with a 1970s ford wiring loom. I have since installed on my Ford 460 engine a single wire alternator and am confused where to put the one wire. The alternator shop said to connect to the battery with a switch provided by the ignition switch. Is this correct??
i have 64 1/2 mustang, i disconnected my regulator and then i connected my yeiiow/black to my black/yellow then hooked up my one wire ault. to black/ yellow to hot side of sidinoid. tested with test light to battery and no draw. this way i still have horn will this be ok?
Hi i have a 1963 ranchero went from generator to one wire alternator but still not charging the battery please send any help
great tips here but question about voltage reg ,wouldn't 12v give incorrect readings to fuel, temp ,oil .I have a Comet
Those are regulated at the gauge cluster.
I know you read the comments... im sure every time you see my name youre like “oh gosh whats he got to say now?!?”
LOL I like the action...
For my 74 f350 do I need to run a hot wire to my horn for them to work if I’m doing a 1 wire conversion?
You should have a power wire going to the fuse block which pretty much runs everything on the vehicle.. The wires then go out to the various parts such as the horn.
On the schematic for 63 Falcon, 6 cyl., generator output goes to "A" term on regulator then to charge indicator light, just like the schematic you showed. For clarification, the hot wire from my new one wire alternator would go straight to the bulb indicator light , and bypass the "A" terminal on the regulator?
Did you ever get this question answered here or elsewhere?
@@stubby1122 no I haven't
@@stubby1122 no I did not
I've been waiting for answer but to my understanding you run the original power wire of the generator to the one wire hot lead and a wire from the hot lead to the hot power battery post/ the left side of the starter solenoid. So your original generator wiring willpower the light and the lead to the solenoid or battery will charge the battery. This is how I'm understanding this as well as do a jumper from the b-2a at the voltage regulator or between those wires so that you can get the horns to work
What do I do with the wires that used to be plugged into the voltage regulator?
I have a 99 cobra do you know where the opposite end of the alternator connector connect too??
I'm sorry I don't, I don't really work on the newer cars.
Did a 1 wire conversion on my 63 Galaxie and now I I have no power to ignition. No power inside car except power convertible top. What am I missing?

Check this image for correct wiring of a generator to alternator
If switching to a one wire do I still need the voltage regulator?
The one wire is typically internally regulated.
So I can completely disregard my voltage regulator for a ‘66 mustang if I have a one wire alternator?
I have a 53 ford flathead v8 and all the wires are fabric covered.. there's no colors and I'm having a heack of a time getting it started because there are 2 stray wires coming from the firewall bundle of wires one is an accessory wire and one is the ignition..but can't tell which is which and where they go
I would source a wiring schematic and start a trace.
Has anyone else had trouble getting their brake lights (led sequentials) to work? I have a new harness in the whole car and a new light switch. All lights, blinkers, etc work except for the brake lights. Is there better light switches out there?
I also have a new voltage regulator on the dashboard and its making a wierd buzzing noise. Im going to try to install another light switch since when i move the light to the on position the brake lights sort of work
Are your sequential lights LED? You will need a LED Flasher to properly control them.
Do you have a new brake light switch? and, what are we working on? In a pre 1965 Ford a lot of times the brake light switch is on the master cylinder. after 1964 the switch is on the brake pedal under the dash. Sometimes the switch contact needs a shim to work better.
Where does the wires go to from the alternator
On a Ford f150 1987 with a 6 cylinder motor
Where can i find an 1966 ford mustang alternator wire hareness
National Parts Depot.
Don Rush has diagrams for free at WCCC for Cougars of course
Good to know!
Where were you 2 weeks ago LOL
I got here as quick as I could...
At the lake. LOL

Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam."
Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!"
Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..."
Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!"
Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky."
Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction."
Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment?
