  • Add a 1 wire Alternator to a stock Ford Harness.
    Episode 124 Manic Mechanic
    One Wire Conversion on a Stock Ford Wiring Harness
    We talk about how to set up a one wire alternator with a stock Ford wiring harness. We discuss putting a 1 wire alt on a Ford generator harness (1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964). We stalk about butting a one wire generator on a Ford Alternator harness. www.autokrafters.com/

    I'm addicted to F100 trucks. I currently have a 68 that isn't charging & a 64 that isn't firing.
    😐
    They both have butchered wiring, although the 64 is much worse. Still, neither truck had their current issues when I bought them earlier this year. I'm glad their systems are so basic & I'm even more glad that my internet search lead me to your channel. I'm sure I'll be viewing more of your content.
    Thanks!

    Hey Jeff, 6-8 years ago I Swapped a 3G onto my 68 Ranchero. I removed the voltage regulator and just made a jumper wire that plugged the two far end connections of the regulator plug. That kept my Idiot light from staying on. I was instructed to do it this way and it has worked...

    Jeff, at around 8:00 you talk about the IVR. You may be interested to know that in the Ford Shop manual for a 69 Mustang says the Instrument Voltage Regulator has a continual "pulsing voltage with an effective average of 5.0 volts". There isn't a good way to measure it, because its pulsing DC, not constant DC, so they just say to look for a rapid pulse. Kinda like the doctor asking "nurse- does it have a pulse?" If it does, its alive.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  Před 3 lety

      Yes. And since it is analog it has a degrading signal that the newer solid state ones lack.

    1 wire alternators have a small monitoring amperage draw waiting to sense rpm rotation to turn on...a master disconnect is recommended if the vehicle sits for any length of time.

    On my 62 falcon it was as easy as clipping the wires that went to the Generator off flush, and then adding a wire from the alternator to the starter relay.

    I rewired my '47 Lincoln with a 1970s ford wiring loom. I have since installed on my Ford 460 engine a single wire alternator and am confused where to put the one wire. The alternator shop said to connect to the battery with a switch provided by the ignition switch. Is this correct??

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  Před rokem

      You should have a power wire going to the fuse block which pretty much runs everything on the vehicle.. The wires then go out to the various parts such as the horn.

    On the schematic for 63 Falcon, 6 cyl., generator output goes to "A" term on regulator then to charge indicator light, just like the schematic you showed. For clarification, the hot wire from my new one wire alternator would go straight to the bulb indicator light , and bypass the "A" terminal on the regulator?

      I've been waiting for answer but to my understanding you run the original power wire of the generator to the one wire hot lead and a wire from the hot lead to the hot power battery post/ the left side of the starter solenoid. So your original generator wiring willpower the light and the lead to the solenoid or battery will charge the battery. This is how I'm understanding this as well as do a jumper from the b-2a at the voltage regulator or between those wires so that you can get the horns to work

      Do you have a new brake light switch? and, what are we working on? In a pre 1965 Ford a lot of times the brake light switch is on the master cylinder. after 1964 the switch is on the brake pedal under the dash. Sometimes the switch contact needs a shim to work better.
