What is Midrash?

When I was growing up, I had a rabbi who questioned the historical truth of the Midrash. He'd often say, "That's just a midrash". Now I find myself confused... Should we consider the Midrash to be factually true or metaphorical? If it can be one or the other, how can we know which midrashim are metaphors? Rabbi Kelemen explains.
