- Nick Saban vs Jimbo Fisher became College Football's new hottest rivalry over the span of 24 hours Wednesday and Thursday, and on Late Kick Live Ep 262 Josh Pate discussed the war of words between the two from very angle. With Nick Saban continuing to rail against the structure of NIL, this was the first time we heard him go after specific programs. How did you feel about the allegations Saban levied against Jimbo and the Aggies? Not to be outdone, Jimbo Fisher issued one of the more stunning rebuttals in SEC history Thursday morning laced with personal attacks against Nick Saban. Did Fisher go too far or was everything he said warranted? What does this do for the Alabama vs Texas A&M rivalry? Will there be any tangible progress on the NIL front itself after this? Alabama vs Texas A&M game, is gonna be lit. This year. Omg. Ima a Buckeye fan, but I can’t wait to watch. Great content as always!!
Gonna be more lit than your screen shot.. lol
@@KS-vs7ht Haha.
Ngl,I’m a Georgia fan and Bama vs A&M was game of the yr last szn
Bama is a 16 point favorite FYI
Life long Georgia fan but that game will be fun!
I’ve already got my popcorn on order for the TAMU/Bama game in October!
I'm not sure A&M will have a QB ready by then.
@@ugaladh I think Jimbo’s plan is to sign Aaron Rogers to an NIL deal with TAMU by the time October rolls around. Aaron will be making more money with that NIL deal then be would under his current Green Bay contract. You know with all the oil tycoon money A&M has and oil being at +$100 per barrel 🤣
I think that college football has a problem that is much bigger than the dispute between Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher. You’ve already covered that issue well in another video. It has to do with the emerging fragmentation of the sport into 2 divisions: programs that adhere to the traditional student-athlete model and programs that unabashedly run a semi-pro league.
The former have not won or dominated CFB in a long time. Players have been paid under the table for a long time. The student athlete model was made to apply to a CFB in which schools didn’t make too much money from it either. Once everybody joined Notre Dame by capitalising on broadcasting rights, people started paying top recruits under the table. So much that the original creator of the amateurism model campaigned to end it before his death.
It’s always been that way! Watch this… 2 colleges in one small population but talent rich state….School A is in a metro area with diverse demographics and traditionally, a diverse student body. School B is in a rural area with historically an extreme majority white students body but a booster club who will pay like crazy… School A is always called a sleeping giant. School B is a giant more times than not. It’s pretty obvious that these 5 star kids are getting paid to attend the football power school in an environment that they aren’t used to…especially back in the 70 & 80’s. Can you guess the two schools?
The "traditional student athlete model' has always been a fraud. That term came to being in the 1950's when a player from the University of Denver determined that he should be considered an employee of the university after becoming injured. In response the NCAA came up with a term to describe college athletes. That term is "Student Athlete". This day of reckoning has been a long time coming.
Spot on
The 'student' part has been questionable for decades. There is the fact that just 6% of black HS students met all of the ACT benchmarks, yet major college teams are 2/3 black. It's a darned coincidence how that 6% of college-ready blacks would also be great athletes.

@@chukwubuikemewelike2028 I guess lost in my point is the fact that everyone knows he did do it. But again, who cares? A&M has deeper pockets than bama and most other sec schools. Embrace it. And market that
@@rl4923 They beat Alabama last year and then go 8-4 and no show for their bowl game, they have not had a 10 win season in 24 years. Their last conf championship was the very first year they were in the Big 12 in 1998 and have not sniffed one since. Now we are told to believe that they all of sudden have arrived and didn't buy their class in first year of NIL? Yea right, Its insulting.
I'm not a Bama fan nor an A&M fan so I'm indifferent...but - to me - the manner in which Fisher reacted kind of only made Saban look right and it struck a nerve. Saban basically stated a fact (albeit an offensive one for A&M) and Fisher really lost composure with his reaction and even resorting to personal attacks on a man who took him under his wing and owes some of his current coaching success to.
100% AGREE!
The Texas A&M vs Bama game is guaranteed to be televised on PRIME TIME 7pm kickoff 🏈
Remember this is the same Jimbo Fisher who publicly attacked the credible rape accuser of Jameis Winston quotes: "there was no crime" / "there was no victim here".
Rather than saying this matter is being investigated by the authorities, until the matter is resolved there will be no further actions or comments.
Jimbo wasn't there, so publicly trashing the reputation of a potential rape victim is about as slimy dirty as it gets.
Btw, since then there's been an additional Jameis Winston rape accusation from an Uber driver, along with a number of less than appropriate Jameis public behavior instances...
So draw your own conclusions...
Unfortunately thats doubtful. Those prime time ABC games are typically played by non SEC schools. This game will likely be played at 3:30 CBS

Saban told the truth, perhaps without class or style, but Jimbo went full on Crazy.
Not exactly. Saban said Bama didn't buy one player. I mean, I don't think anyone is dumb enough to believe that.
@@drewledbetter8317 Look up the rules surrounding NILs and how they are to be used and you'll see Nick is right and Jimbo, Deion and others aren't applying NILs in the manner intended. The NCAA did a poor job of setting up rules for NIL and now they are trying to backtrack and create rules after their failure to do so.
@@drewledbetter8317 You're right: the NCAA is a joke. You're wrong: the NCAA enforce very few rules. You're right: they do take a long time to punish anybody. The NCAA doesn't really distinguish between "exploit" and "break" their rules whether Jimbo understands them or not.

The truth Saban spoke hurts don’t it.
Here’s why there was the argument. Saban was bringing to our attention the problems with NIL (Just like he did with the transfer portal). He doesn’t like the change. He’s not worried. He will adjust…. No problem. Fisher got mad because he is guilty for taking an inch and going a mile.
So he brings up jackson state, bama has been getting away with shades stuff for a while especially when it goes into louisiana and it's a well known fact and remember last year when the coach out of a Georgia school told of bama recruiting violation and the sec didn't do sqat

I don't keep up with college football enough to really weigh in on what saban said but what I can weigh in on is, Nick saban weighs his words very carefully, I think he knew exactly what he was saying and why, but if u look at the past and statements saban has made, hes been proven right almost every time.
Bingo!
Notice that Saban's comments were about A&M's recruiting practices and the recruiting class as a group. Fisher's comments were directly about Saban himself and his character.
Saban took a shot at the integrity of A&M, Jimbo, and Jimbo’s recruiting team. Of course Jimbo would get mad over it.
@@howardbaxter2514 I just meant that Saban's comments, while over the line in my opinion, were about the program's practices broadly. Fisher repeatedly directly insulted Saban himself and questioned his character directly. I don't think any major program is squeaky clean. Calling each other out publicly like this just comes off as hypocritical, imo.
@@howardbaxter2514 No that's not what Randy is talking about. Saban: "Look at what A&M are doing they bought players, etc.." Jimbo: "Saban is a bad guy, he cheats, isn't God, etc.." Do you see the difference?
Jimbo would be more respectable here if he would have said something like "Alabama has also been cheating before NIL and I can prove it, also they are just butt hurt they can't compete with NIL, etc".... Him targeting Saban vs Alabama seemed off for me from the beginning. Saban never targeted Jimbo the human being. Jimbo sounded like a previous disgruntled employee who finally got his chance to "grind his axe".
@@randyevans4967 I agree, I think both sides are being hypocritical, but I think it was a below the belt statement by Saban.
Well, we will see how all this turns out come fall. We may be seeing the birth of a heated rivalry between A&M and Bama due to the Saban-Jimbo feud. At least y’all are a more tolerable fan base than a couple other teams we hate (*cough LSU and tu)
@@clearstar8354 Saban did take a shot at Jimbo and his practices. He straight up said “look at what A&M are doing. They *bought* players”. That’s a huge implication that implies nefarious actions by A&M. Jimbo shouldn’t have said some of the things he said, but he was 100% in the right to call out Saban. What astounds me is the student disdain Saban has for A&M. It started last year when all Jimbo said was that he will beat Bama in Tuscaloosa at some point in the not too distant future. He never implied when, and then the media and Saban interpreted that statement the wrong way and got triggered over it. We had no qualms with Bama before, but with the statement from last year, and this year’s statement, we see y’all a whole lot differently.

With NIL even with a salary cap and a average salary of 75,000X85 players that's $6,000,000 to $7,000,000 a year. You're going to price at least half of the 130 division one schools out of the game. Josh I have a simple solution. The problem is a recruiting disadvantage in pay for signatures. To solve this just make it where you can't receive NIL until your second year at a school ... That stops some of the portal stuff too...
My thing neither guys looks good or wins in this. Saban on one hand is
the guy who should not have spoken of specific programs. He should
rightfully catch grief for it. But I think the more lasting damage will
be on Fisher for being so over the top with his words about Saban.
You get a sense for people's overall character in events like this.
I know personally I have had suspicions confirmed about Jimbo's
nature confirmed in this back and forth. My guess it will stain his
reputation moreso than Saban. But the thing that stands out especially
is I don't see how the two ever just get past all this. Even if the two men
recognzize their faults in the matter and totally apologize publicly
and privately. It is going to make every event the two are at very akward
to say the least. Hard to see this not the beginning of the greatest rivalry
ever among college coaches.
What Saban said wasn’t wrong, but for Jimbo to respond that way makes me think he’s wearing tampons once a month.
Fisher overplayed his hand this week. Looking forward to seeing A&M in Tuscaloosa this year 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Maybe, maybe not.. I mean the infamous tide did get handled by a then sloppy unranked am team last season and damn nearly got spanked by Florida, ole miss, etc so.. either way, what does your comment or the next season matches have to do with the honesty, integrity and respect as a coach, team and a program as a whole across the board? In my opinion, what it shows is weakness and the possible fragile state a once consistent super elite program and team is becoming while also being equally as frustrated with other programs and competitors getting better, recruiting equally even better and efficiently and building an equally elite program that Bama has been known for so many years. If no laws is or are proven to be factually broken then I'd call this being a sore loser now and in the future! Oh yeah, for the record, I'm neither a Bama or am fan but I can appreciate good competition across the nation in each conference nor do I hate either of these programs but it is what it is currently but what say you if am handles the tide at Bama along with a few other schools? Oh yeah, Saban was always a critic of nil and transfer portals but I've noticed it's all good when they commit to the tide for some reason...
Honestly, Saban shouldn’t have done that. But the way Fisher talked, he seemed embarrassed. Of course he isn’t doing anything illegal. Saban didn’t say he did.
No Saban is saying he violated the rules surrounding NILs. If Jimbo did nothing wrong by paying players in the manner he did, why is he denying that's how he did it. He says they aren't even paying players at all
Coach Fisher “stated” that he and other coaches “know” of Saban wrong doing. If this is true, he has the responsibility to report them to the NCAA.
Did these things happen when Fisher coached under Saban?. Then he was part of it.
I think you be naive to think this isn’t done in every program. As I always say, there’s 2 kinds of college coaches… the caught and the uncaught.
@@mattgarr57 naive? Lol…..the system has never been fair for the student athlete, big money for the universities for ages. Jimbo was pissed... Should be a fun year in the SEC
The conferences have a vested interest in maintaining the integrity of their member institutions. It’s time for NIL to be run through the conference office. Demand transparency. If an athlete has an NIL deal it must be registered with the league office. The people involved, the timing of the offer and acceptance of said offer, the disbursement of funds-it should all be out in the open and subject to scrutiny. No offers can be made until a full year has been completed.
Good content
The “17 year old kids” comment makes me feel like they’re 100% guilty. No way they go from getting 1-2 5star players a year to 7 after 3-4 consecutive 8-4 seasons.
Great take on this Josh! And I agree. If teams from across the country are going to play on the same field, they need to recruit (and pay players) according to the same rules. NCAA can’t do it, so either get a national commissioner or get Congress to do it.
Thanks Josh for in depth view of the coach squabble. You made sense of the argument.

What most people miss is that Saban did not say the A & M did anything wrong. He did they use NIL to set up a collective and pay all players. He said Alabama did not use this option BUT may in the future. He is clearing the way for Alabama's forthcoming collective to pay all players also. Jimbo said A & M is not paying any players but when asked about the collective he didn't know anything (wink, wink). Plausible deniability at it's best.
Jimbo fired up the jets and went to war.
Just subscribed Josh, I like your approach to seeing all sides of a discussion. Now as far as disagreeing... The free market will self regulate the NIL, heck, most of the big contract NIL players are going to take a pay cut when they get to the NFL. So let them get whatever they can. Nick knows Alabama can not compete with the top schools in money, that is the distant ringing of the bell of his loss of dominance in the College Game. Of course he's going to do anything he can to get it back to where it was for the past 30 years. NIL is here to stay. Trying to make players employees is silly, won't happen. But the one simple thing that the NCAA can do immediately is govern the Portal. Adjust final NSD to allow for the National Championship game to be played, then open the portal for 2 weeks, then it's closed and a week later have the NSD. Anyone can transfer, but they have to do it at that one time.

Texas A&M has 11 early spring enrollees from the #1 recruiting class. Only 1 signed a NIL deal. Saban needs to do his research before he speaks.
So what you're saying is the boosters put 30 million up for nil deals and only one player signed a deal?
What is getting Saban nuts is the way Texas has created basically a signing bonus system to recruit these kids. You come to my school and here is some cash, don'y worry if you don't actually have a company interested in your NIL we have wealthy fans instead.
Thing is, when Jimbo was at Florida State here was his 5 star recruiting:
2010: 3
2011: 4
2012: 6
Jimbo has a history of landing 5 star talent.
That's what he does.
There is a difference in landing 5 stars at Florida State and 5 stars at TAMU. FSU had terrible staff and still managed to have a commitment from the unanimous number 1 recruit up until signing day. Point being, each program has a major drawing point. FSU has football prestige and legacy leagues above TAMU. Texas AM has something else, more so than almost any other college program, and I think we both know what that is.
Did Saban make some comments a few years back bragging about his QB having a million dollar deal before stepping on campus?
Yes, Bryce Young signed a million dollar NIL deal before he ever took a snap at Alabama, Nick is claiming he did that AFTER he signed to play at Bama, not during recruiting.
40y Aggie fan here. Saban was off base, he started it and was way in the wrong there. While Jimbo needed to mount a defense, the personal attacks were too much.
The recruits that went to TAM didn't get an NIL deal? Then yeah, Coach Saban was wrong. Wait... they did get NIL deals? So what is the deal with what Coach said that was wrong? I don't recall Coach Saban saying it was illegal like what JimBO said he said. But when uses NIL deals as part of their recruiting, then that is what is an issue and Coach Saban said they were going to have to follow and start offering monetary deals for recruits to come to their school as well. (Obviously not every player makes their soul decision on one aspect like NIL)
@@stanleymyrick4068 Didn't see you replied. And yes, your original comment was correct. The recruits *did not* got an NIL deal. And what did Saban say that was wrong? He said (quote) "A&M bought every single recruit they got". Well, that's factually incorrect and takes just a couple min to call the compliance department to verify. Second that discredits everything that everyone did to recruit those players by saying they were simply bought. Third, that discredits the student athletes by saying they were just bought. There's not much room to defend Saban here. Other than the fact that Saban is right, NIL is the wild west with wildly varying laws and no way a even playing field.
@@yezakd I haven't quote unquote fact checked it myself. And I'm buzzing right now because the stock market has gone to hell... but ... There wasn't TAM boosters involved in offerring the things that he said Alabama's alum would have to do to compete? Seems out of character for Coach Saban just to make something up and call out names. Regardless of what is discredited, if the shoe fits... Also, obviously players, most players, aren't going to only make their choice on one factor and liking coaches and the school and the probablity of being in a system that will help them gain the next level factors in. That is what I would call making a mountain out of a molehill if you imply that it was just the highest bidder he was speaking of.
Love how Jimbo didn’t exactly refute things. Just mentioned they didn’t break any “rules”. Well yes there is a huge grey area around NIL and they may not have “bought” players but they certainly went headfirst into the deep with setting up a collective targeting players the coaches wanted v
Jimbo is a scum bag, a$$$m bought their class just like Jimbo sold out the FSU folks to go to a$$$m for all that money. He has always been a low character, low integrity coach. Its insulting that fisher expects us to believe they recruited all those kids just because his staff are so great. Here is what we do know, a$$$m has a bunch of empty trophy cases, do not have the all Americans, Heismans, NC's, conf championships, or other awards to be considered a blue blood. They do have extremely wealthy donors, the types that can more than afford Jimbo's salary and that can buy him a class which is what they did.
If it’s not breaking any rules than y’all need to stop crying about it.
@@Jon155mt Talk the Jimbo, he is the one howling about it. If he is above board then why even respond to Saban?
@@Jon155mt y’all? I’m not crying about it. Not an AM or Bama fan either. Just pointing out the irony
Jimbo’s pearl clutching is embarrassing
I LOVE IT !
After the whole video I wanna add that this NIL came from back when NCAA Football game got sued for likeness and had 2 stop making them! That was the jump off point
I can tell ya, as a UNC fan, Mack has been talking about how there need to be rules. Ray Charles could see this coming, especially given the barebones rules in place when they unleashed NIL. I just don't know how you get it done. That said, I'm buying Iron Five and Storm Duck t's every chance I can get.
As an Aggie, i was obviously biased pressing “play”, but both men acted childish. I love Jimbo fighting back, he just could have done a better job in response.
Bama v A&M is gonna be wild
You know next year the ncaa will be all up in the tamu program seeing what’s up
Josh made a great point at the end but I wish he would of gone further. One of the biggest issues is TV money and inequality. Bama deserves 50 million in SEC tv rights but does Vanderbilt? I mean teams like Clemson, Miami and FSU get only 10 million because they are in the ACC and have a bad deal with ESPN. And with that money gap multiplying year after year then you will never have equal and or competitive college football anymore. It is kind of like the Blue Jays or Pirates competing against the Dodgers and Yankees.
There are no rules regarding NIL and paying players. The NCAA is toothless even if there were rules. Much as I didn’t like this idea previously, I now think it’s essential that there is a college football commissioner.
Did y’all know those kids were 17 years old?
Found that part of his statement to be kind of weird...
Sob...wya?! 😡
Nick Saban is right. Just like he's been right about everything else he has tried to warn everyone about. I'm not hating on Texas A&M but everyone knows they bought just about every player on that #1 recruiting class. And no, technically they likely didn't break any rules doing it. That's where the issue is. There has to be more rules and regulations on the NIL because schools like Texas A&M will continue to exploit it and use it as a recruiting tool instead of using the NIL as it was intended. You can't get mad at Texas A&M for taking advantage of the lack of rules. But it's clear that something has to be done before your top 5 teams end up being the top 5 wealthiest schools. That's not good for College Football. I think we can all agree on that.
Again, what evidence do you, or you Saban have to make that statement a "fact"? Don't worry, I'll wait...
If A&M bought the #1 class, then Saban paid just as much for the #2 class.
I am Oklahoma fan I will be watching October 8th Texas A&M versus Alabama I will have my popcorn out watching this game 🔥 🔥 🔥
I think your show was amazing on this. You took a large argument between 2 giants and figured out what they agree on. Both coaches love this sport as I do and I think they both are the ones that will do whatever is best for college football because they are college football. I am glad they have the passion to argue. The argument will end and college football will continue with the help of these 2 coaches. Thank you for a great show!
One day in the 1870s, some students at Yale took a leather ball outside. Fifteen minutes later, there were academic violations and athletic scandals.
Unless I misunderstood ... my understanding of what Jimbo said was basically they didn't break any rules.
Professional sports are going by the way side and it will happen to college sports also. The problem is plain old greed.
Saban didn’t say they cheated or did anything illegal. He just said they out spent him. But jimbo heard what he wanted to hear
Heated Rivalry that's becoming one fo the best at least
Lol. They don’t have any rivalry. TAM isn’t on the level of several SEC teams much less has any rivalry with any SEC team.
Just glad the drama is on another team!
I really believe that A&M has done things that Saban claimed of why did Fisher go after Saban. Get up there and say we did nothing wrong and that’s all I got to say about that.
Never talk bad about a former employee...Jimbo's gonna have Nick in his crosshairs, when they play again...
A&M absolutely took advantage of NIL to get the #1 class. That doesn't mean they broke the rules, and I don't think Saban was suggesting that they did. Saban is mad that he can't just get the best players by being bama anymore though.
He still got the best players though. Alabama's average player rating was still higher than A&Ms smart guy.
@@darthsaban8665 Well that depends on what ranking site you look at. Their classes are obviously super close, and it's not like Alabama didn't also take advantage of NIL. A&M just happened to be able to spend more money. I don't think Bama or A&M have anything to complain about right now. They are both benefiting from the current state of college football.
@@darthsaban8665A&M's average player ranking went slightly behind Bama's when A&M signed a 3 star kicker. Everybody knows A&M's signing class was better than Bama's, but nice cope
It typical knee jerk reaction when he lost to A&M in both game and recruiting. Oh yea, I forgot the Georgia game. Butt hurt Nicky.
Bruh he’s warning you clowns about NIL just like he did the transfer portal we just got the 2nd ranked class not buying recruits with collectives. DO YOU REALLY wanna go down that road? Do you really want to? Because he will adapt just like always bank on it chief.
Hard to say., we were all over the map tonight. Naturally, a Crimson Tide fan so its very hard to describe what happened. I actually thought Bama would cover and what happened was near metaphysical.
October 8th gonna be LIT!!!
I think Fisher protests too much. Also, Saban just was talking about what was wrong with NIL. He didn’t call names. He was just complaining about NIL. Like all of us. He didn’t call names. Fisher came out and said awful things. Btw, where would Fisher be without Saban?
He is an 8 win coach that will lose his 5 Stars to the portal because he isn’t that good of a coach. He has less character than Chizik
@@rah5931 keep crying and turning a blind eye to what Jimbo is building.
@@rah5931 Sure. A sub par program that beat Bama last year. LOL.
Also in Recruiting. LOL
Funny Saban was touting Youngs million dollar NIL.
Are you too dense to understand the difference between giving NIL to the starter vs a high school player who hasn't even enrolled at the school yet?
I hope they make up. They will figure out this NIL stuff. What happens when they meet at the SEC coaching meetings? Men’s football and basketball players should be paid. All players should be paid something. Saban hates change but adapts. What about asking those ex coaches? Remember when he hated the no huddle, said it was dangerous on the players…but then figured out how to use it pretty quick. Saban hates the NIL but maybe Jimbo knows how to do it better right now.
Why is no one discussing USC? With the Pitt wide receiver and the rumored 3.5mil
Why are we still unable to mention that both of these coaches have recruited #1 classes, and won championships, on the backs of the bagman. Saban clutches pearls over NIL, and we all pretend that all the programs in the top 10 haven’t thrown $10s of thousands in cash (or more) at top recruits for 40 years.
First off I have no love for bama and definitely no love for Saban but it's kinda crazy listening to Jimbo Fisher call someone else despicable after being caught up in trying to cover up a rape at FSU for Jameis Winston.
🎯
I can promise you that if the feds get involved it's goodbye to college ball
People forget more than half this class is from Texas!
5 of the 8 Five Stars? From Texas.
Also most teams lost their head coach and other teams are down.
This class was the perfect storm for Jimbo Fisher. And they were all at Kyle Field when they beat Alabama.
Yes NIL played a factor but it wasn’t even the main reason
And half of them will be gone in 2 years.
Would this be a meaningful fix: how about disallowing transfer portal athletes from any use of NIL for the first year following their transfer to another school?
They just sold a game guys don’t think too deep about it. They both literally are correct this was just about tv ratings and views about this coming seasons game. Everyone knows top schools pay recruits in one fashion or another 😂 for years this has happened
The NIL and the portal needs to be corrected I agree, BUT if you're going to limit what the kids make then we need to put a cap on what the head coach makes. Its ridiculous when the highest paid person in a college or in some cases is a college coach.
Why would a team speak out when no one knows the actual NIL rules and there doing the same stuff
NIL just highighted what has been going on for a long time!!!
Thanks for standing up for your faith in JESUS CHRIST and putting that in perspective.
