Jeep XJ - Rough Idle & Stalling Issues? Clean the Throttle Body & Test the TPS Sensor

  • Our 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ recently started having a rough idle issues that would often stall the jeep and give us a P1391 error code. We begin looking into fixing the issue by giving the Throttle Body & Idle Air Controller (IAC) a deep clean and test the voltage of our Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) with a multimeter while we were at it.

    Not only was this video incredibly informative while I chase down my rough idle and cylinder 3 & 4 misfire due to heat soak, watching your interactions with your son made my night. Great stuff, I look forward to more informative XJ repairs from you and your son!

    Good, concise, informative, and nicely edited. I love the overlays you put on there, because as a beginner, I have no idea what I am looking at when looking at my XJ's engine bay LOL. Learned something new. My XJ has been having a rough start to the point where I had to pump the accelerator for it to even start. But today, it started, stalled, then never was able to start back up. Starter still turns over though. Looks like I am gonna be cleaning the Throttle Body of my '98 XJ.

      @sandbox_adventures  Před rokem +1

      Thanks! Trouble shooting anything in the engine bay can be a daunting task for sure - especially when a "symptom" can have multiple potential culprits. Fingers crossed a cleaning does the trick for you. If not, you may want to check the TPS sensor too.

    If you have a friend with a lathe, i suggest doing an intake manifold match to the throttle body. The bottom of the TB is about 55mm give or take, and the IM is roughly 61.5 to 62.25mm.
    I bored mine to just below the butterfly on the short side and the idle is significantly smoother, and a snappier throttle response.
    Happy new years to you both!

    You gained a new subscriber. I’ve only seen a few of your vids. I like how you keep Preston involved with being able to see what you are doing through the camera and phone. He has caught you making mistakes. 😊 He has a eagle eye and actually comes up with good suggestions and questions. That’s great that you spend that kind of quality time with him and you have the patience of a saint. If you don’t mind my asking, what kind of condition does he have? I have a ‘93 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2dr so I like the play by play I fo you put out. Keep up the good work and awesome family time.

      Preston has a genetic disorder called Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Here is a link that does a really good job explaining what it is, but basically the disease slowly weakens his muscles over time.

    Going to do this tomorrow. My jeep is stalling, rough idling and I swapped out the TPS SENSOR and it was running fine for a few days, up until today. Bought a new IAC sensor, replaced it and it is still doing the same thing. Wanting to stall and high RPMs. Cleaned what I could since it got dark and I have to be up at 4AM for work lol but thank you for this.

    • @sandbox_adventures
      @sandbox_adventures  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hey brother! Hope you guys are doing well. So I took the CPS off. There’s no serial number on it… obviously aftermarket lol. OEM parts only right? Mopar?

    • @sandbox_adventures
      @sandbox_adventures  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Doing great, thanks! working on getting a new rear bumper installed.
      So we tried ordering a Mopar CPS but the shipment kept being pushed back week after week- may have been a Covid supply chain related 🤷‍♂️. We ended up using Duralast from Autozone because I grew impatient and Preston wanted to go to the off-road park. But yes, id go Mopar if you can find one because the aftermarket ones tend to have quality control issues.

    I have the same jeep. Same color and everything. My dad left it for me when he passed away. He replaced alot of stuff in it. I've replaced alot of stuff in it. It's always something new but I don't mind. I just did some rust repair on it and painted the rockers. She looks nice. Get along of complements. Wasn't sure about that gold color a d matching gold wheels when he first bought it but it's really grown on me and I've put some nice bfgs all terrains on, painted rockers and fender flares and black trim. Dad would be so excited to see now. Replaced alot of things mechanical. Most on my own. That's the cool part of these xjs. They're almost easy to work on lol. Took me five minutes to put new head lights in. My 96 f150 took me like 7 hours lol. Love the simplicity and nimbleness of the xj. Plus I get a stupid amount of compliments on it it's ridiculous. I'm really getting to be a huge fan of the xj. I see exactly why dad owned 4 of them. They're the greatest suv ever imo

    how did you repair the wire after stabbing it

    • @sandbox_adventures
      @sandbox_adventures  Před měsícem

      The multi meter prong should be able to get a reading without actually puncturing the protective wire coating. But if it did, I’d use some electrical tape to cover it. If the wire somehow got really damage (very unlikely really), I’d splice it with a solder stick connection.

    Oh by cleaning your carburetor would it help the RPM?

    • @sandbox_adventures
      @sandbox_adventures  Před rokem +1

      I haven’t personally owned or worked on a car with a carburetor, but I imagine better air flow from cleaning the carb would lead to a better fuel mixture and possibly affect your RPMs. Good luck!

    Hi I’m having some random stalling on my Jeep , when I’m at stops it idles low once I press on it’s a rough acceleration any ideas on problem?

    • @sandbox_adventures
      @sandbox_adventures  Před 9 měsíci

      Could be a few different things u fortunately. We had similar issues and started with checking the throttle body and TPS and then moved on to replacing the crankshaft position sensor which solved our problem. If that didn’t work, our next option would have been the cam shaft position sensor. Hope that helps. Good luck!

    • @sandbox_adventures
      @sandbox_adventures  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Desert Sand Pearl per the original window sticker in the glove box. That’s actually how we came up with the name Sandbox for the Jeep - the sand color and because XJs are box shaped.
