Matts explanation of school vs farm welders is spot on!! As someone who grew up on a farm with no money and no fancy tools, I utalize the many skills of frustration developed throughout childhood regularly. Git'er Done.
100% … I grew up on the farm and welded many things. Some may say you can’t do that, I say hold my beer and watch me lol. Matt was spot on.
Just make it work. And sometimes all you have is a torch and hangers to work with. Just make it work.
Deja Blue was spot on. Welder description was spot on. Our maintenance crew at the sawmill I was at from 1994 to 2020 went through so many guys. The rare certified welder that would actually start to work for our wage that was beneath them didn't last long. Once they figured out you couldn't bring the entire plant in the shop to the bench they quit. Welding parts that broke in below zero temperatures at break time was even less appealing. We had a couple guys that might have been certified but never talked about it. Lincoln made a great aluminum rod for stick welding and it was great on "clean aluminum".
Gotta go with Déjà Blue! The fact that ya'll are basically building the Banana all over again, and Robby gets to paint it again, but this time blue; it just fits. Plus, Dory the Explory is cool, but it would be better if you guys were building him a Ford Explorer and gave it some combo of pink and purple with the blue and yellow (like blue and yellow exterior with a pink and purple interior).

This is a seriously awesome episode, even by MORR standards. Seeing a team like that working together on a cool project like this is really inspiring. Matt's enthusiam in this episode is contageous too! Love the rebore side project in between too.
Love your engine building Matt. I’ve rebuilt plenty of engines with a lot more run time on them than those Corvair engines and haven’t measured the cylinder bore at all. They all run great. What you have done is more than adequate for the job at hand.
Let's be real. Matt can do ANY thing, but Tom can do everything better. Like naming things. DejaBlu is a great name!

Whoa… I learn new things everytime I visit this workshop. Some good, some questionable, but the explanation of the term “Dashboard”, kind of blew my mind. I have never wondered where that term came from, and did not know I desperately needed to know this! It’s 8.15am Christmas Day here in Midway Point, Tasmania, Australia, and I have heaps of people for lunch. There is no way out for them. I am going to educate every living soul about this fact (whether they like it or not).

I love seeing another XJ build. I'm a little biased, because I have a 97 Xj and the first time I came across Matt's channel was in the very first few videos of him doing recoveries in the "banana" as I was searching for Jeep Xj Videos.
I was instantly hooked and been a fan ever since. And to think my 11 year old son and I sent him and Tom two custom signs and they actually hung them in the shop. One on the door "Caution Matt it's Hot!!!" And "Tom Tom's AMAZING Miss Sally.....Matt secretly loves it" above Tom's drill press and milkshake machine...😂

@AlWorth9738if I had to have one rod, it would probably be 7018. I've stick weld everything due to not having a shop. I've had actual certified welders tell me you can't stick weld aluminum, or if you stick weld stainless it will fail. With enough pre and post heat, you can stick weld damn well anything.

Color: Yellow vs Deja Bleu
Fruit: Banana vs "Blue Java" Banana - greenish blue hue, vanilla fragrance, best color when unripened as ripened ones will turn yellow. Extension of the banana family.
Other Blue fruit names: Sloe Plums, Blue Marble tree fruit, Damson plums, Brazilian Jenipapos ("Robipapa"), Kastoree - blue mangoes [bluangos].
Great to see Kaulin welding, fabricating and comfortably working is a discombobulated manner.
Another great video from the crew at MORR. My vote is for Deja Blue. As others have pointed out, if it was an Explorer not a Cherokee than Dorra would have worked. To Matt and his family, the MORR crew and to all who watch and comment on these videos I wish you a Verry Merry Christmas.
Because I haven’t specifically called him out yet - Jake’s teamwork and perpetual optimism and good attitude is an excellent model for men and masculinity. We can’t all be the Matt, in every aspect of our lives, the leaders, and Jake is exactly the kind of follower I try and strive to be when it’s my turn to follow, at work, with my partner, wherever. Jake sets a quality standard and it’s excellent to see in him a broader range of the expression of masculinity that we’re not regularly shown in traditional media. Because that guy’s tougher than I’ll ever be, but handles himself with grace and positivity.
Agreed. Some teams gel, grow, and reproduce (because followers become leaders), and others sputter, fail, and implode. We're always seeing growth in the MORR family because of quality people who keep people before product. And wouldn't you know it?.. That makes for quality product. 👍

Blue bananas, also known as blue Java bananas or ice cream bananas, are a unique variety of banana that have a distinct blue-green color when unripe and turn pale yellow when ripe.
I absolutely love the collabs between all the channels I watch. Robby Layton, MORR, Fab Rats, Chad's Fab, TrailMater etc..
If it was an Explorer instead of a Jeep, I'd vote for Dory but since it's a Jeep, it's blue, and it's a clone(sorta) of the Banana, Deja Blue is my vote.

I just learned something new that I didn't know about why it's called a dashboard, thanks Matt. I'm looking forward to another new year of awesome videos with great builds and recoveries. Matt - Cut a square hole for a window in a 1/4" thick plate steel door and weld in a 1/4" thick wire reinforced glass window sealing it water tight without having to go back with sealant while leaving the glass clear. Farmer who taught me to weld could do it using a gas torch but sadly he passed before he could show me how he pulled it off. He did a lot of things the "School Book" welders with high certifications would tell you they learned in school were totally impossible.
I say that sometimes your held back when they teach you things are impossible when it might be better stated that we haven't figured that one out yet. Many things that Farmers figured out unfortunately haven't been documented and included in the textbooks.

I'd like to see you "bob" (shorten) the back end so the rear doesn't scrape as you come down off of large obstacles, like the banana does. That would be easy to do on the rolled tangerine.
I think its awesome how you guys help eachother out with things like this. Robbie will be suer to love his Jeep. I thought a good name would have been the Banana Split. Basically because its a split from the Banana. But its all good.

happy holidays to the whole morr crew and your families! i really love the name dory for the banana clone but there is actually a blue banana from southeast asia that taste like vanilla called blue java banana, vanilla banana or ice cream banana. It is also called 'Krie' in the Philippines and 'Cenizo' in Central America. :)

I really appreciate the Corvair info because my Grandpa, before moving to Florida, had a 63 brown hardtop and a 67 convertible in baby blue. So I love hearing it and then reminiscing about the good old days of cleaning carbs of the 67 so my grandpa would be willing to take me out in it. Thanks for everything you guys do!

It's cool to see the camera crew getting involved as well. Learning how to set up and use a plasma cutter seems like a very useful skill too have in your back pocket

Possibly the Blue-per, or Moody Blue, but I think Tom's idea Deja Blu has merit as it is a Banana clone and therefore is (deja vu) already seen in yellow. This man can do nuclear engineering and French, is there no end to his talent?
Matt, back in 1960, until '67, my dad was a Corvair specialist for a Cen Cal Chevy dealer. In 1960, he was crew chief for a sports car racer named Chuck Cornett. He built a Corvair engine that they ran in a Cooper chassis in Class D sports, and dominated for several years until the Cooper chassis was banned. I don't recall many specifics, but I remember they kept burning valves on the "long end" of the heads, and dad used plastic aluminum to fab extra carb bbsses, making 4 carb heads before the factory did. He used 409 rod bolts, and it would rev to 9500 RPM. Later, they used a Crown kit to put a 327 mid engine in a " 65 Corvair and ran class A sports. He had a Greenbriar van that would pull the Grapevine at 90+ mph.
Hearing Robby's kids call it "Dory thee Explory" is just too good to pass up

Originally, the word dashboard applied to a barrier of wood or leather fixed at the front of a horse-drawn carriage or sleigh to protect the driver from mud or other debris "dashed up" (thrown up) by the horses' hooves.[
@@NickoBaggins- I'm from the school of dash being an adverb associated with movement such as flung.
So perhaps a dashboard could have originally been a barrier to deflect things being flung but was then superceded and incorporated into the windshield. Our boat was dashed upon the breakwater by waves during a storm.
It's just so cool that Matt builds all this V8-powered macho stuff, but loves old Corvairs!!

I like your approach to hand fitting your Corvair cylinders and crosshatching. This reminds me of the movie
" The Worlds Fastest Indian".
In that movie the singular genius hand-made his own pistons by casting them in sand. Great movie, I appreciate your resourcefulness.
