I think a lot of consumers do know that their products expire, but they continue to use them because they spent so much money on them, or they aren't available anymore.

A lot of people fall into the trap of "it's still good" because a product looks and smells like new, months or even years after first use. By the time a product has changed in appearance or scent, it's wayyyyy past the point of being "safe" to put on your skin. The preservatives are only meant to keep the product safe for a specific amount of time, not until it goes rancid!

@@lisahmitchell I needed it because my health was doing poorly and covering the signs up was much faster than what it healed and gave me a stronger sence of agency and power :P I didn't even do much, takes me literally a few minutes to slap on some color "corrector", eyeshadow, and lipstick. But people not getting too concerned and not constantly asking me if I was okay was worth so much. The social impact of not constantly getting reminded of my condition made it so much easier to be happy. So, no, you do not get to dictate what people need or not. People react to visual stimuli. For instance people get way more grossed out about scabs than bandaids, which is why even if you regularly moisturize the scab you are usually better off covering it with a bandaid because it distracts people less and they disrupt you less in turn :P

As someone who has suffered from severe rosacea, I have a very complicated history with makeup -- when my skin was very bad, I couldn't tolerate makeup, but the public couldn't tolerate me, so I had complete social exclusion. When my skin was better, I could tolerate makeup, and it allowed me to rejoin society. Now that it's in remission, I don't use it anymore except powder to try to reduce the greasiness of my sunscreen. It's a tough subject. It's nice to hear someone talk about it in a sensitive way -- I appreciate that a lot. It's easy to say "don't wear makeup!" but I probably got six months out of the house thanks to it.

My skin wasn’t crazy bad but I didn’t have any knowledge and relied on Sephora for skincare. It was expensive, ineffective, and not thought out. I can’t tell you how much you’ve saved my skin and wallet. And I’ve never felt so comfortable in my skin. I now regularly toss items that may be past its best use date. Until your videos, I didn’t know that there was a shelf life to cosmetics. Probably ok since I never had a reaction (or bad enough to notice) but man it feels good to have so much simplicity. Makeup takes 5 minutes (tinted spf and a CC with spf, a cream blush and some mascara). Thanks for all the amazing information and insights you share!

I am so glad to see you talk about this!!! In addition to personal make-up, I find it so gross when I am at Sephora and Ulta and people put make up on from the testers like it is there own which is gross. They don't just swatch it on their hand and promptly clean it off with hand sanitizer!!! All I can think of is the petri dish they are putting all over their face. I personally do enjoy some makeup, but I do have my days I go without it and let my skin breath, and I always go for sunscreen as opposed to wearing full-face makeup. Actually, the only time I might wear a full-coverage makeup is for a special occasion where I have to get really dressed up.

I have acne and I hope my story can help others like me. When I finally gave up trying to hide my ane with layers of foundation and concealer make up (which at times seemed to emphasize it, rather than hide it) my breakouts dramatically lessened. It was scary at first, going without my mask, but once I saw how much my skin improved, my desire to use it lessened over time. I think I was far more conscious of my own blemishes than most other people were. I still enjoy playing with my eye makeup and occassionally cover the under eye circles when they're especially dark, but only when I feel like it. Along with better skin, I am free of always having to have full make up on before leaving the house. For years, when it was really bad, I would refuse to go out in public, I felt so hideously ugly. Even with my make up on. It's a time saver and I been told I look younger, which is awesome (I'm 55 year old)
I still have the acne but not as bad and it heals faster. Following Dr Dray's skin care suggestions, (which admittedly were counterintuitive to me at first) have improved the health of my skin, way beyond what my dermatologist was able to do with pills and antibacterial lotions. thx fo the info. i found myself using silicone 'sponges', little ones for my face, and bigger ones for my body in the shower. i love scrubbies, but have seen how mold gets hold of scrub gloves, loofahs, blenders, etc. i use plastic spatulas for all creams in a jar, wipe lids with 70% rubbing alcohol and/or hydrogen peroxide, and wash my face brushes carefully, same as i do for watercolor brushes, i.e. regularly and dried upside down to protect the handle and the bristles.

I wash my brushes weekly, and my makeup bags get thrown in the washer periodically, every couple of weeks. I get foundation in a pump so no brushes or fingers can contaminate the product. Spraying powdered products with alcohol helps, too, but throw it away of it's past expiration.
The goal is less make up in time as my skin improves, maybe even no make up some day!

I’ve always been skeptical of the beauty blender or sponges similar to it because of the bacteria. I wanted to like the product but always noticed increased acne after using it even if I am careful about washing it in between used.
I think a lot of people are also not taught to clean their makeup properly which also contributes to the bacteria and risk of infection

I use a powder sunscreen over my makeup on days when I'm outdoors a lot. I already use a moisturizer with SPF 30 daily, and I make sure to put a decent layer on, but there are times where I need to look nice while out in the sun. I know that powder sunscreen doesn't give the most even coverage, but it's better than nothing.
