This is why I don't buy palettes with more than 4 shades. I'm not spending money on colors that I won't even use. I can just get a single eyeshadow if I need something for a special event.
I'm a subscriber and this is so timely. I'm pretty versed on how long to keep things but it's painful to toss. I'm preparing to do it this weekend. The lesson is really to buy less stuff! By the way, sometimes the travel sizes are a better value. Example, Better Than Sex Mascara. Love your channel!
I completely understand. It is always sad to throw things away that seem to still be good to use. Thank you!!
Thank you for the video! I’m tossing out make up now!! It’s a lil bittersweet but I feel relieved!! And scared of my mascara lol
I definitely know that bitter sweet feeling all to well! Thank you for being here, Erica!
Great video Dr. Rupa! I don't wear a lot of makeup but love my mascaras! Thank you for pointing out they have an expiration date. Have a great day! ❤️
Glad to help. Thank you!!
I only buy drugstore eye makeup these days so I’m not hesitant to toss it even if there is product left over after several months of use. If I’m spending department store prices on makeup I’m not gonna be likely to actually throw it out
Fantastic point! And I'm going to do a video on drug store vs. department store - the ingredients are usually very similar
I always buy makeup on sale so I don’t feel bad throwing them away. Honestly nothing is worth a potential Health risk.
Thank you for sharing your expertise to keep our eyes healthy, especially regarding eye make-up, which is something we women use on daily basis.
I am so glad this helped you. Thank you!!
Thank you so much this exactly happened with me, i am truly grateful for this 🌸
Thank you! Awsome video as usual
So glad it was helpful!
I'm going to toss out my old pallates now 😢
Thank you Doctor for this video! I'm experiencing a bad blefaritis caused probably by a mascara that I'm using for a year! Since it costed 35$ I was thinking to use till it will become dry but I was soooo wrong and now I am having swollen eyes and itchy lids 🙈 I'll follow your suggestion and proceed by tossing all expired make up and cleaning my brushes in order to clear out my makeup routine. In the meantime some days without any makeup will be my option 😔 thanks for the video Dr. Really informative ❣️
Ugh! So sorry, Giulia. I hope you heal quickly. I am glad this video was informative and hope to see what you think about my other videos as well. :) Feel free to leave any video suggestions you have!
I feel like with cake mascara, since you can sanitize it and change the sppolie easily, you could prolong it's usability. It also isn't a wet product, it's water activated. Lush sells them and Besame too.
Are some of these symptoms you might not notice you are having due to other issues? For example, I have allergies pretty bad (to pets and other things). Sometimes it makes my eyes red and itchy and watery, sometimes it makes my eyelids puffy. Also, how would you be able to tell it is from the makeup? Does it take a while to show up? Or would you notice it while wearing the expired/infected makeup?
I have feel a lil heavy after wearing mascara for more than 2-3 hours..what could be the reason for that? Even if I buy a new product and use it, it always happens!
Hello. Off topic but I had a question about daily lenses. If I wear daily lenses and one of them falls down as i’m trying to put it in my eye, am i able to use contact solution for rinse it off or can contact solution only be used to rinse off monthly contacts?
Thank you! I now wish I didn't go crazy buying so much makeup. Will be throwing out my mascara.
We have all been there!
Im not buying $50+ 24+pan eyeshadow pallete to throw it away in a year, when it wont be fully used after that time. Its a waste of makeup lol
I’m the same, I have some old pallets that I’m still using and they are not cheap. I do make sure I clean my brushes every week.
About to set up automatic delivery every 3 months of my fav mascara so I don’t even have to think about it!
Thank you for this video. Although this a good start and I understand you have to be impeccable in the education you offer your audience, I think there needs to be a lot more research done before I can part with my items.
For the mascara study, did they check for bacteria after 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month as well? Because my guess is bacteria is on there after the first use. And, if so, what level of bacteria is needed to increase the probability of an infection? Or at what point do higher risk bacteria (pseudomonas, etc) show up? Mind you, I do adhere to the q3 months rule, but I feel it’s likely an arbitrary endpoint used (3 months) and I’m not sure I’m any safer at 3 months as I would be at 1 or 6 months.
And in terms of dry products, what about people who pull a palette to use once a year? How long does bacteria live on the surface of an unused palette? What if you use a brand new palette but with an old or dirty brush?
For 30 years of my life I had much bigger priorities as a single momma and then as a grad student- I only owned 1 eyeshadow palette and I used it every couple of months or so. I never even thought about it expiring. I never had a problem. Now I can afford any makeup I want and I have happily built a collection- but to the point that it will be every few months that I reach for any particular palette.
I’ll be honest, I’ll be willing to go in and be treated for conjunctivitis (if it ever happens-still hasn’t in all my 50+ yrs of life) and toss the immediate past few palettes I used than to toss my entire investment in a year with what I feel is thin evidence.
hi didi,great info
Thank you!
My maybelline fit me foundation expired on 7/22 and its year 2023 ...so can i use it until the dec of this year cuz ive used it on skin after expiration and the smell and everything is absolutely fine ....so should i continue to use it till the end of this year . And also i keep the makeup in dry and seperate place ...
Can bacteria grow on the products while on the store shelves?
What if you have only used an eyeshadow once in a year? Do we stilll throw it away? Would love to see a video about glitter!
I'm a glitter fanatic and I have lots of expired glitter eyeshadow.
I would not use it after it expires, personally. Glitter is a great video idea!! Thank you for the suggestion.
Thank you for this Dr Wong! Will def throw out my current mascara tube
Also- love your nail polish color. Is it gel?
Your skin and hair look flawless! Would love to know your secrets :)
Yup - it's gel. Just converted b/c I'm an awful nail biter and i pick at my nails when they chip. Olaplex for my hair and lots of skin moisturizer!
@@DrRupaWong thank you!
Amazing video! What about gel eyeliner?
If you spray isopropyl alcohol after every use of eyeshadows palette would it last longer ? Or does it still have the 1 year expiry
Thanks for the question! I would always abide by the expiration date.
What if we use our makeup just once a year?
the bacteria that got into it first time you opened it doesn’t care
I have a UV sterilizer and I spray my eye makeup with alcohol.
I also clean my brushes and have a steel makeup palette /spatula to take up pigment vs directly dipping for my creamier formulations.
I assume because of that, the expiration is more so about the quality drop vs bacteria/fungi since I take steps to mitigate that?
@@Viviolau great question! I will be addressing this in a future video. ☺️
@@DrRupaWong thanks :) looking forward to it.
I feel so sad throwing out collection I waited in long lines for
Ugh, its the worst!
For eyeliner, can’t one just sharpen the lid and get rid of bacteria?
The pencils do last longer than the gel or liquid but there is still a risk of infection if using after the expiration. Hope that helps! Thank you for watching!
I was unable to find the diagram you mentioned at the end. Sorry I’m not very tech savvy lol
I'm sorry for the delayed response!! Here is the link for my downloadable guide: courses.drrupawong.com/expired-makeup
@@DrRupaWong thank you sooo very much!!
@@constancemeadville8196 Of course! Thank you!!
I accidentally got some expired eyeliner on my mouth whilst cleaning it... now I am really worried what should I do
Just clean it off with a cleanser. It shouldn't hurt you :)
Can we make the eyeshadows last longer by cleaning the surface with alcohol?
If you're unsure, it is better to not use the product at all if it has reached the expiration date.
Thank you for your comment, Martha!
@@DrRupaWong thank you very much! 😇 Sorry, I have other even more important question: I used an expired eyeliner and now one place in my eyelid got a little swollen and itchy. I guess I must wait before applying eye makeup again. How long should I wait? I'd love to wear makeup this weekend!. Thank you so much! 💓
@@justmeagain7 Don't be sorry! I love the questions and responses. To be on the safe side you probably should not apply makeup until you feel it is fully healed. I'm sorry you had that experience!! I hope it heals quickly.
@@DrRupaWong thank you! 💝
I always have lacrimation after putting eye shadow
That sounds aggravating. So sorry!
with the pandemic I rarely wear makeup so I have an eyeliner I bought about 11 months ago, I need to toss that? I have to toss everything out including eye shadows!
If you opened it then you should probably toss it. If you haven't opened it yet, then it should be alright!
Too long.
Thanks for the feedback!
