Such a wonderful series. I wish all married couples loved each other this much, and all husbands were as nice as William. Miss the good ol' decades, 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Marvellous comedy series, when telly was entertaining and funny! Also, recently rediscovered another 80's series, 'After Henry', which I'd forgotten about. Good times!
I cannot imagine why this is not showing on any streaming platforms now! I was glad to find it here because I just love it and have to watch it every so often! Thanks

Well - no need to get excited.......you weren't missing much. *only kidding - I grew up with these comedies, which you weren't able to see, until now.....*
Watching the series for the 6-7th tine from Texas... love the Britcoms and this is right up there w my favs. Just discovered the sequel French Fields, also wonderful!!
He played the part of a pompous twit constantly worried about his "image" and reputation. I remember that the mother-in-law was constantly drinking hard liquor. But a fun show for the times. The line I remember was "It's only me, Sonia!" In the last show, they dumped a pail of water over her.
I remember watching this on PBS back in the 80s. It was one of my favorite comedy shows. I remember thinking how old both he and she looked because I was a teenager, then to my chagrin as I'm looking at it now I'm thinking how young they look. Lol. Lol

Just happened upon these by accident. I'm in America and our television shows are hideous. I love the old British comedies. Thanks for uploading. Nice seeing 'Miss Marple' in her younger days.
I first saw this show on PBS in the late 1990s. I liked the episodes "a waiting game where William volunteers as a bartender at a party hester is catering to, and the episode "caught in the act when William and Hester's daughter Emma's in laws visit, and finding them unbearable they decide to hide from them. A really shame most of the cast is not around.
This series part of a fashion in the 80s to give actors primarily known for their theatre work a sitcom on ITV / Channel 4. Apart from this, we had the likes of Judy Dench and her husband Michael Williams in "A Fine Romance", Hywel Bennett in "Shelley" and Simon Callow in "Chance in a Million".
hi it's scott here thank you 4 reloading freshfields as Julia McKenzie and Anton Rodgers are a great parent just like Terry Scott and June Whitfield then it a great husband and wife but I see you're missing the episode a Dickens of a Christmas it was forecast over Christmas it was broadcast on the 25th of the 12th on ITV3
Is this the only episode where "Tom", their other child is mentioned? Wonder what the story was behind writing him out. Also bewildered at about 18:00 I am not catching the reference "what you got up to in little hampton" "wait till you hear about what we got up to in Watson underneath?"

love the way her glass magically fills it's self while he's eating and she's serving ...
Well spotted
Rest in peace, Ann Beach who played the lovely neighbour Sonia
Childhood memories, the theme just sticks in my head. Very good series.
Hello, greetings from the States. What we have here is a British Lucille Ball, they both get into all sorts of wacky situations 😉
Absolutely agree. Julia McKenzie also has a gorgeous sing voice but sadly our Hester doesn't sing.

The character of Hester, played by Julia McKenzie, was just delightful!

Nothing beats British Comedy.
This is the dregs of it, like pretty much all the other ITV sitcoms
I completely missed all TV of the late 70's and 80's as I joined the army and was posted abroad most of the time.
Thanks for all of these.

Anton Rodgers was a very versatile actor who didn’t really achieve the level of fame he should have done.

Strange seeing as this wasnt a BBC series
Didn't it become French Fields after a couple of seasons?
domformula1 yes when Hester and William immigrate to France.
Has a 'Happy Ever After' feel to it, but with the roles reversed. I think it had the same writer if I'm not mistaken.
no pancake tossing in this episode!
