This shows, you need the right teacher to help you understand things like this, and you nailed it! Thanks for this.
Thank you so much for letting me know that! That’s my goal!
Little girl is like please stop talking lol
😂
Absolutely great walkthrough of your process Matt. I often watch these just to see what other people are doing. I do photography only as a hobby, but I love it. just got my second strobe so I'm excited to start playing like this.
Thank you for taking the time to say that!
This is great stuff - and I don't understand the complaints about talking too much. You do a thorough job of explaining the process and I wouldn't get as much out of it if you were racing through.
Haha me either. I mean it’s free content and you don’t have to watch if you don’t like my teaching style 🤣 Thank you!
My absolute FIRST reaction to this was “My goodness she’s tiny.” 😂 Excellent video.
Thank you!! 😁
This was one of the best explanations of HSS vs Flash Duration and how to utilize both!! Thanks for putting out such great content.
Wow thank you! You’re very welcome.
Great video !!! Extremely informative, calm, collected and very comprehensive delivery while speaking / explaing. Great work.
Glad you liked it!
explained in simple terms, much better than many of the videos on Hypersync and HSS
Thank you! I appreciate you watching.
Great video. Thank you for sharing all of these videos, they are always so helpful!!
You are so welcome!
Nice work Matt! This really helps me as I have the FJ400s as well. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge!
Glad to help!
Another great video Mr. Hernandez! Very informative and clear! Thank you.
You are very welcome
Great content easy to understand. Keep them coming Matt. Thanks so much
Thanks, will do!
Great once again Matt! Learned something new about my FJ400!
Great to hear!
Great video and explanation!
Thank you!
Nice explanation about using the FJ400 and FJ X2m to freeze action. I enjoy following your videos
Awesome, thank you!
Such detailed explanation. Thanks a lot.
Most welcome!
Great walkthrough! And such an impressively patient young athlete :-)
Thank you! Yes she was haha
YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!!! Thank you for sharing
You are so welcome!
Great video👍new sub. That foto outside with the trees , was a amazing shoot
Thank you so much!
really better to use t0.1 as a measurement of flash duration for action freezing
Thank you for this!
My pleasure!
Your video was great also! Subscribed
Thank you!
That is the most patient girl I have seen in a long time.
Hahahahaha yes is that.
This is s great information, and you have a great dancer model
Thank you so much!
Great explanation and examples 🍻
Glad you liked it!
The pleasure is mine. Best regards.@@MattHernandez
Thanks for the video Matt. Great stuff. New to flash photography and just started following you.
My question is, how come I don't see the strobes engaging when you took the 2 pics at 11:46 and 51? Is it due to the video frame rate of 30 or 24 fps?
Just curious if you knew.
I hadn’t noticed but I assume that’s it. Because of the fast flash duration and frame rate it was captured. That’s got to be it because the strobes didn’t misfire during that shoot at all
You’re very welcome!
For back button focus, do you just hold the back button focus button until you press shutter?
Yes that’s correct!
👌👌no.1 👍👍
Thanks 😊
Awesome stuff as you have been doing for years! My question is for inside photo shoots (basketball courts, soccer field, etc) would you generally utilize high speed sync since the athletes are moving faster? Thanks for all of your videos over the years!
Thank you Tony! No not inside. I usually use HSS outside and flash duration inside. That was the main goal of this video, to point that out. I hope I didn’t fail in delivering that message haha.
@@MattHernandez Thank you for the response and all of the great videos over the years!
Thank you so much , you do such a great job of explaining!
Wow ! I never knew that.
Awesome!
Can you essentially make this photo dark and all with only the Godox ad20? Curious if 1 light will do it
1 light will absolutely do it if it’s powerful enough. I’m not familiar with that one in particular
Hi Matt, would it make any difference if you shot at 1/100 instead of 1/400? Since flash freezes motion it shouldn't really affect the subject.
Yeah, it will depending on how fast it’s moving. It just depends…400 is enough to freeze some things but not others.
Amazing ! How do you get 1600 shutter when using flash ?
You have to have a strobe that will allow you to do high speed sync!
I’m using a godox ad600 which allows high speed sync but for some reason this camera model won’t allow it
Why do you want your edge light more powerful than your key light? Is that just in this example, or in general? (and why?).
Because if it’s not you won’t see it nearly as well. There needs to be contrast.
@@MattHernandez Thank you Matt for the clarification. Just purchased my first strobe and modifier and trying to absorb little bits at a time. Every little bit helps! Much appreciated.
HSS is not great for freezing action but needs must in bright conditions. Reason is the flash has to pulse. Also HSS will cause a colour shift and you lose a ton of flash power.
Not great? It does a pretty good job for me haha! The color shift isn’t a big deal honestly. It does happen but it’s not the end of the world. Most people would never even know.
What stands are you using here
It’s an avenger stand but not 100% sure ok the model. It’s about 10 years old lol.
Whats up with the pallets hanging from the ceiling?
Just esthetic. They were there when I rented the place. From the last lady that had an art studio in there 🤣
What you don’t like them? I’m offended! 🤣🤣🤣
Love your videos, Matt, I've learned a lot.
One oddity I've noticed is that you have many of your models stand on camera (looking board to death) while you talk for several minutes.
Can't you bring them in when it's time to actually use them?
Thanks! Probably so 🤣
She must have tough feet. No shoes. Also wish Westcott came out with these lights years ago. I would have bought these instead of Profoto. Nice in and out demonstration
Sell them and switch! Glad you enjoyed the video thank you for the message!
Yap yap yap good lord!
Trying to help people, and there’s about 1000 things I have to think about every shot I take. Trying to be as thorough as possible so everyone gets what they need answered! Thanks for watching.
Thought it was perfect. The few who don’t want to hear you talk have a choice to move on. Most of us are here to learn and your explanations are what keep us watching your awesome tutorials! Keep up the good work and detailed explanations.
Banding tip: Always disable electronic front curtain with HSS
Yeah that doesn’t fix it unfortunately.
But I do appreciate the feedback.
@@MattHernandez it fixes it for my sony cameras w/hss on godox lights. I'll double check next time I shoot, but if I use e-front curtain over say 1/1000 I get tons on small banding
nice video, but too much talking before finally a shot is taken, feels like a podcast. why not and show e.g. some mistake-pictures, like how does it look at 1/250 instead of 1/1600 in-between the talk or so?
I like to explain everything fully. I’d rather do that than under explain haha. Thanks for watching and the feedback!
it's great that you explain it but man let your models go do something else while you yak for 20 minutes at a time then let them come into the scene when you're ready to shoot them
Plus when you have your strobes at full power outside your drastically slowing the duration down and don't you have to worry about ghosting even if you do you have a fast shutter speed?
I do like make sure I explain things thoroughly! Great idea I’ll take that into consideration next time, thank you 🤣!
No you sure don’t. Not if your shutter speed is fast enough to freeze the action you’re shooting.
@@MattHernandez ah ok thanks.. but that brought up another question because when I was doing a runner one time I had lots of ghosting/blurry shots even though I was shooting it well over 1000th of a second shutter I was in high speed sync and I had it set to full power so I was thinking maybe since high speed sync does a bunch of rapid flashes maybe that's how I was getting them because I couldn't figure it out
so it full power is the flash duration still like 1/250 of a second does it take that long to do all those little burst flashes? it completely makes sense that if I had it set to a quarter power that the flash duration would be much faster like as fast as the shutter speed and it would freeze with no ghosting but I know that day I couldn't figure out why I was get it after about 10 shots I just told him we do shots without flash then I would just brighten them and post production so that's what I did
maybe I'll do experimenting over the next couple weeks and try to figure it out
But thanks again
@@kenaterphotography4624 my best advice is to keep experimenting. I’ve never had that problem if my model is exposed correctly. If you’re outside you’ll need a lot of power to underexpose the scene, which would also mean using HSS.
@@MattHernandez thanks
Sorry dude, best intentions, but this is all over the place. Plus shouldn't you be talking about t 0.1 not t 0.5 in the studio?
Just trying to be thorough brother. No I was trying to be as basic with the explanation of flash duration as I could, not confuse anyone (including myself 🤣🤣🤣). I’ve gotten really good feedback from that video…sorry if you didn’t like it but thanks for watching!
To much talking, not enough photography.
I’ve got to explain what I’m doing so people understand why I’m doing it. I do talk a lot haha. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for taking the time to explain each and every step and settings, learned a lot!
Thank you for talking a lot, great teaching skills !
Great video!!!!!!!! Great explanation! thanks
If you’ve ever tried to explain something thoroughly while on location doing the work, it’s going to be a lot of talking. He did a great job, I was able to see for each shot his settings, how he controlled the flashes, and understand the preparation which is 90% of shooting. So he talked a lot about all of the prep. Relax and enjoy it.
I like your video but you talk to much !!
Thanks!
