- Flash sync speeds, flash duration and shutter speeds are often confusing when starting out in DSLR photography. visualeducation.com
What is HSS and why can't I sync my flash to use it at faster shutter speeds?
Also, if you like my training - please share with your photography friends and hopefully I can help them too!
Thank you,
Karl Taylor

Wow this was 9 years ago???? the quality of this content is even above than common tutorials out there this 2023!!!! Good thing i bumped into it.
I know we are 7 billion people on this planet and everyone has different taste, likes and interests. But there is absolutely no reason to dislike THIS video. A supergood busy Pro Photographer takes 13 minutes of his life to explain this topic so good, helpful and enthusiastic to all us Idi*ts out there. But 33 People aren't synced to respect i guess. Thanks Karl
There are a lot of videos on the internet that explain HOW to use HSS but this is the only one I've seen that actually explains the "science" behind it. It isn't necessary to know this stuff if you just want to learn the basics and start shooting but it definitely deepens your understanding if you know what is happening inside the camera. Thanks a lot, Karl!
its great the explanation of the curtains explains WHY the black in photos above 1\250
*Do you understand flash sync speeds?* #photographytips #learnbetterlearnfaster
Steven Ralte I felt like whacking the flash on the table when I said flower! :)
Yes! Great video... but... in the video you talk about Hight Speed Sinc to solve the problem about possibility of certain DSLR to shoot very fast only with the slice windows method with certain flashes which use multiple bursts. You also says that cameras with leaf shutter haven't this problem (if you have a flash with high sync speed). I have a Nikon D800 so over 1/250 it uses the slice windows method. So my question is: How to identify which flahses (speedflash or portable lights, like broncolor) have this capability to produce multiple burst? I mean, if the camera had a leaf flash I would have only to worry about a flash with a similar maximum high sinc speed. But with a camera with the other kind of shutter, how can I identify the right flash to shoot in external daylight with enought power and a very high sync speed? Thank you!!!
yap, as much u mentioned. If there is something else then please bring that to.
***** Something is not clear: Speed Flash uses multiple bursts to make sure
that flash exposure lasts for the entire journey of that slit (created
by the two curtains) passing accross the sensor.
But a normal studio flash, like Broncolor you show in the video... does it do the same?
Because I have a studio flash (FOMEX HD 1000) but it doesn't sync over 1/250.
So when I buy a studio flash or studio and portable flash with battery pack, for example, what should I read in product features to be sure it will work to syncronize at high speed?
And what kind of trigger are compatible?
The flash can synchronise - it's your camera that can't. If you have a camera that can synchronise then the flash will match it. Most DSLRs can only sync to 1/250th, other cameras like medium format can sync at any speed. Ways round it are with hyper sync and HSS as explained in this video but there are limiting factors.
Finally sync speed explained to maximum, this is the best sync tutorials ever. Thanks Karl.
I don't think anyone can teach photography better than you ever
This is by far the easiest to understand explanation video about Flash sync speed that I have ever seen. Thanks Karl.

Amazing training, everything is super clear. I love those speed flashes, use them often. I 'd love to thank you separately for your shutter demonstrations and clear English. Just wonderful! Thank you!
As a new photographer looking for intelligent critique and explanations, your video was stellar and FAR better than many I've watched, not that the others weren't good, Rather your sensibilities toward educating are extremely spot on and highly informative. I'm a fan now for certain

Karl, you're amazing! keep up the good work!!👍👍
Wow!! I'm surprised you follow a thread this old. Thank You for commenting. For some reason I figured a photographer of your stature doesn't follow the comments more than a few days. I'm pleasantly surprised and glad you actually follow up on your videos. Thanks again.

+Anna Paulina he he I treasure that one :)
I loved that look in your face "Flower?"
Very concise explanation. Great stuff.
Great explanation of Sync Speeds...one thing I have been using to compensate for my slow sync speed is to just use an ND filter to bring down the ambient and turn up the power on my multi-flash setups. Great video!
Great explanation. All of the props really helped to show the concepts you were talking about.
Thank you Karl. I'm really impressed and greatful for taking time to properly make me understand not only high speed flash but how the camera actually works as well.. I love this video

Thank you Karl - this was the clearest explanation of why I can't use high shutter speeds on my Nikon D3300. Now I understand why the black bands were appearing. :)

Excellent explanation! Now I get it! Great job teaching
Holy crap... this was actually happening at a photo shoot almost a couple years ago. Upon troubleshooting on the spot, I came to realize that I needed to lower the shutter speed and finished the shoot successfully. Although it's good to know the science and mechanics behind such a thing, so that's cool. Thanks.
You are awesome!!! Depth of understanding is fascinating and very clear!!! Thanks for this video Karl!!! :)
This video is amazingly clear on that concept!
this video was very helpful. i just ordered a flash and this knowledge will prevent my confusion if Ii see that blacked out portion
Thanks for the video Karl. Great explanation! Kudos!
Thank you for this in depth analysis. Your knowledge is greatly appreciated.
Thank you Matthew.
Woow what an awesome explanation. Simple easy. Thank you so much and it is very very useful.
Yesterday, I used the flash for the first time and ran into this issue. your video demystified the problem. Thanks, Karl. As always, your a goldmine of experience to learn from. Out of curiosity, I had another issue, the off-camera flash sometimes does not trigger at all, when I move a bit further (triggering the shutter remotely). My gear, A7R111, F20M , F45M (off camera flash)
Good clear presentation of HSS. I had learned it before, but I wanted to see how you present before subscribing to your other video tutorials.
Man Awesome............. Every time I thought I am a learned photographer...... and every time I ends-up learning something good from you.
Happy to help!
