Are welds that strong? I'm not anyone to talk about this; not being a shop person really.

Welds can be "stronger" than the original material even. If you were to run liquid through this you'd need to do a pressure test, and if you use it for something critical I'd make a few test pieces and abuse them past their failure point (or look it up, there's charts and stuff made by lovely lovely nerds ;) ).
Welds are usually hard though, and that is what makes a bad weld brittle
