Royal Haslar Hospital MASSIVE URBEX

  • This place was so large and we only did about two thirds of it. It has some of the longest tunnels of any hospital I have ever seen. It was also stocked with CT/MRI Nuclear Medicine scanners and peoples blood samples and other crazyness. It is being converted to housing so the only time to see it is the next 6 months... Its location on the Portsmouth Docks was stunning with views out to sea.
    WIKI INFO:
The Admiralty acquired the site selected for the hospital, Haslar Farm, whose name came from Anglo-Saxon Hæsel-ōra (English: Hazel Bank), in 1745.[1] The building was designed by Theodore Jacobsen and construction of the main building was completed in on 23 October 1753.[1] On completion it was the largest brick building in Europe.[1] Building works cost more than £100,000, nearly double the cost of the Admiralty headquarters in London. In its early years it was known as the Royal Hospital Haslar.[1]
Patients usually arrived by boat (it was not until 1795 that a bridge was built over Haslar Creek, providing a direct link to Gosport).[1] Built on a peninsula, the guard towers, high brick walls, bars and railings throughout the site were all designed to stop patients, many of whom had been press ganged, from going absent without leave.[3]
The hospital treated casualties between 1803 and 1815 during the Napoleonic Wars.[1]
The hospital established the country's first blood bank, treated casualties from the Normandy landings and deployed clinicians to field hospitals in Europe and in the Far East during the Second World War.[1] It was renamed the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar to reflect its naval traditions in 1954.[1]
The hospital's remit became tri-service in 1996 when it reverted to being called the Royal Hospital Haslar.[1] A hyperbaric medicine unit was established at the hospital at that time.[5] To mark the handover of control to the National Health Service in 2007, the military medical staff "marched out" of the hospital in 2007, exercising the unit's rights of the freedom of Gosport.[6]
    Closure
All remaining medical facilities at the site were closed in 2009. The 25-hectare hospital site was sold to developers for £3 million later that year in 2009
On 17 May 2010 an investigation of the hospital's burial ground, by archaeologists from Cranfield Forensic Institute, was featured on Channel 4's television programme Time Team. It established that a large number of individuals (calculated as approximately 7,785[9]) had been buried in unmarked graves.[10]
Plans were released in 2014 for a £152 million redevelopment scheme involving housing, commercial space, a retirement home and a hotel.[11] The hospital itself is a Grade II listed building.[12]

Wow this place is very nostalgic to me. I spent almost two weeks in there in 1986 as a twelve year old after a cadet training accident. The amazing thing was. The older guys I was in the ward with gave me cigarettes and occasionally a bit of whiskey 🥃😂. Yes you were actually allowed to drink and smoke in there. Amazing

I was a patient there in the 70's as the son of a Sailor. I had peritonitis and they saved my life. Nurses and Doctor's were wonderful. Even after full recovery I didn't want to leave, but I was only 8 or 9 then. I can remember sneaking out of the ward to play with the cage lift!

At first glance I said to myself not another hospital explore! Abandoned nursing facilities and hospitals are getting old. But I watched it because it was Matt's. And he did not disappoint. Utterly fascinating. Well done!

I think the first three blocks you were looking at were known as the "Zymotic Hospital," which apparently treated sailors with mental illnesses. That explains the spy windows between what would have been nurses offices and main ward areas. Your underground tunnels would have been beneath the central buildings that contained the A & E department and theatres - this was still in use until about 1995' and then demolished soon afterwards to render the hospital useless and fend off the campaign to retain it as an NHS facility. The vaulted area at 1 hr 54 min is the original entrance to the hospital, sailors were brought in by a tramway, whose tracks you saw, c1830.

    • @EcointerestDotCom
      @EcointerestDotCom Před rokem +1

Starting from the eastern end of Zymotics wards (for infectious diseases, well away from main hospital) there was MI, 2, 3 and 4. These were for treating things like measles, chicken pox, etc. Then at the western end, Z1, 2, 3 and 4. These were for tuberculosis. At one time there was a small building close to gates leading out onto the sea front. This was formerly use for cases of small pox. This has been demolished, as has the far-western ward, Z3 and 4.

Living in Portsmouth, heard so much about this place over the years, but never really realised the site is this big, there were loads of protests against it's closure at the time, as it put a lot more pressure on the QA hospital in Portsmouth. Some fabulous views & drone footage from up there too!

I can vaguely remember having my Tonsils out at Haslar hospital about Mid 1960's. I was about 4 years old. My Father was in the Navy. The nurses were great and told me I would get plenty of Ice Cream to eat after the op, which as far as I can remember I did. A real shame to see such an Historic place in a shambles

Matt it was unbelievable on sheer size of the place with so much interesting thing’s to see within the buildings and especially seeing the underground cellar parts and also seeing the spiral oval staircase was fantastic sight and also seeing the lower ground area with cobble stone flooring or tiles in court yard and the architectural ceiling design was a fantastic plus there was so much stuff still left inside that must have cost a fortune in its construction and also seeing the drone footage shows how immense the whole complex was 👍😊

I know I’m very late seeing this, but a work mate of mine used to work in Haslar. The roof spaces/attics you walked through they would have to do regular security sweeps through to ensure the IRA/other groups hadn’t left an unwanted gift up there which is why they have those walkways. 😬

Hey Matt I loved to climb when I was younger . Experienced a couple falls . The scariest was a ladder . 50 feet in extra slow mo . The Last 15 feet before I bounced off the ground . Was when my carcass & ladder were moving the fastest . Didn't break anything . Soar for about 2 months . Lesson . Always have a spotter , tie off your ladder and if possible wear a Harness and Helmet .
