I have never heard Kenyon Martin described as a busy despite being a number 1 pick. Because he clearly wasn't a bust. He had a good career with flashes of greatness. A bust is a guy who disappoints so badly that his career is barely a footnote. Kenyon Martin played 15 years and was a important player on multiple teams. He was never a MVP level player but he was a starter for a decade plus. Definitely not close to a bust.

That 2000 year he should've probably been runner up for MVP bc SAC was a doormat before he got there. I remember SAC won about 26 games before CWebb then 27 his 1st year during the lockout season.

Tyson Chandler was supposed to be the next kevin Garnett coming out of highschool I believe Chicago destroyed his confidence offensively and all he had left to stay in the leauge is play defense
there wasn't a lot of hype that I know of around Tyson Chandler. But he developed into a good player. Was a key component in Dallas getting their only championship.
And not keeping him was a key component in why they haven't come close to getting back.
Centers take longer to develop anyway. They can't work on individual moves by themselves like other positions can. Being the biggest on the court they need another big person to really thoroughly work on things.
So coming out of high school where it's even rarer to go against a similar size player makes it even worse.
Dwight Howard should've played in college. It would've help his career long problem with bad footwork and being off balance posting up with his back to the basket.

Sheed didn’t get to to Detroit until later in the season. He was a mid season trade in February

Even when Darko was drafted, many commentators questioned the pick because what the roster was and the coach was notorious for NOT playing rookies.. Darko was just put in a shit situation from jump
I've been saying that myself for years. Darko was set up to fail from the jump. Larry Brown generally wouldn't play rookies and he loved to instigate stupid mind games with players too. LeBron, Carmelo, Wade, Bosh, and all those other solid to good dudes wouldn't have had a chance to play. Melo really would've had problems there given all the off the court shit and legal drama he got into in Denver. LeBron came into power and he and Larry really would've beefed.
Excuses. Gilbert already showed that using the situations as an excuse, the “coach don’t play rookies” as an excuse isn’t good enough. You train, prepare and whenever your number is called? Deliver. So that coach and/or other coaches see what you’re made of.
Darko came into a situation where he wasn’t asked to carry a franchise. He wasn’t asked to produce right away. Unlike other rookies. And he had good veterans to learn from. If anything he should have been amazing when the smoke cleared. Instead he sulked, complained and let his frustrations get the best of him. Mentally weak.
And for whatever it’s worth Larry brown has a long list of rookies who got significant minutes under him. Larry Hughes, Tim Thomas and Soeedy Claxton.

stanley johnson's coaches never utilized him properly either. he was a center in high school that took it upon himself to change his game and developed, on his own, a 2-guard/small forward skillset. he has post game and the ability to play out of the post and all coaches ever do in the nba is play him off the ball 23 feet away from the basket. i agree with Gil but at the same time, a coach using players wrongly hurts just as much as not taking your opportunity.
I hear what you saying. But I disagree on Stanley. When he got to the league his size and strength were not an advantage. Yes he worked on his game but not to the level that he could consistently give 10-12 points a game. And his Defense wasn’t great. Avg def avg off.
@@jordanned3075 you're not going to come to the league and impact the league right away on either end of the floor. even blue chip star players need time to develop and its wildly unreasonable to expect him to do that. the ones that do are all outliers. his **skillset** is what should have been utilized. 6'7" with a 7 foot wingspan is more than big enough to be able to get post work in the league.
Stanley was not a Center in HS. He played at Mater Dei in Cali which I'm sure you are aware is a basketball powerhouse. They had plenty of size so didn't need him to play Center. He played the SF and SG positions. Went to many of their games when he was there back in the early 2010s.

Melos career would’ve had a COMPLETELY different trajectory if he was drafted as a piston. Unlike Denver, Detroit was competing at that time. And they were a perfect defensive team that fell apart because they didn’t have a primary 25+ ppg scorer. Also the vets in Detroit could’ve trained melo early to play more defense while teaching him to be a better leader. Man that would’ve been beautiful to see, Melo would’ve won a ring before lebron just my opinion 🤷🏾♂️ def trying this in 2k

When I did play, my coaches hated me joking on them all the time so they used to always give me scrub minutes. Those 2-3 min here and there was my time to shine lol Gil said 5 shots, I definitely was trying to get mine in that little of time. And was playing GP level defense lol

If the draft wasn't a thing, the term "Bust" wouldn't even exist. I think about Andrew Wiggins. Compared to all #1 all time, he falls way short. If he was picked 30th, everybody would say he was a steal.

Calling a player a BUST means we as fans and the media got it wrong. The player was just balling, but we (MEDIA) are the ones that put players on pedestals with OUR expectations. When the media calls a player a bust, it really means the sports analysts, ESPN, FOX, and veteran players got the analysis of the BUST wrong. ANALYST and ex-players are wrong the majority of the time, using the BUST term is a scapegoat for us all.

The draft is a representation of how much a team believes ina players potential to impact the game and if they fall short of the potential then they are a bust. Kenyon was no bust he was a really good player an all star call caliber player He had a few serious injuries but he fought through and played well
The man average 23.ppg in back to back nba finals and dropped 35 in a finals game
He was elite defender and was a fan favorite.

He was a key contributor on playoff contending teams
I do think he was snubbed a few all star games and all nba defensive teams

I love this discussion and especially on sportsman like conduct or sportsmanship as it pertains to the idea of not running the score up.
I totally agree with the guys what is more sportman than to compete to the best of you ability until the end of the game. One of the biggest tenants of sports is the idea of competing. Every player is taught from childhood to compete for everything or until the last whistle but then in am actual competition you want players to stop because they have big lead. If thats truly how people feel how would they feel about instituting mercy rules.
The whole idea goes against what you are supposed to do in sports which is compete until the end. Try to be your best amd get the most our of all hardwork and dedication you put in during practice, workouts, training etc. And bring it on game day.
I fwel the sameway about players going for individual records why would we ever pull somebody out a game when they are getting the best our of all the effort they have put in practice and its all oozing out in actual game im this potential record breaking achievment and someone says you have enough of a great game lets put somebody else in to finish. The player should have the opportunity to jave their moment just as teams have their collective moments

I disagree with 03’ Pistons draft conversation, Darko would have been one of one. Because they traded for Rasheed Wallace at the All Star break to fill the PF position.
- There’s a chance Bosh’s offensive game could have earned him more minutes as rookie than Darko got and perhaps they don’t see as a big a need to trade for a PF and acquire R.Wallace.
If Wade or Melo was drafted both would have competed for Sixth Man of the Year awards as rookies and pushed for a starting role in Year 2. Also pre-R.Wallace trade Melo could have saw heavy minutes in a small ball lineup featuring he, T.Prince, R.Hamilton on the floor at the same time.
-RIP was in year 2 as a Piston, Larry Brown would have loved D-Wade because of his defensive effort even as a rookie. D-Wade was a mid-ranger shooter just like RIP but a better slasher to the rim and finished strong around the rim.

He was on a bad warriors team where he didn’t see much playing time and had DNP’s. Add to the fact he didn’t go first rd. He could have easily had a Darko mentality. Who knows if Larry Brown tests rookies by not playing them to see how mentally tough they are. See if you do fold, sulk, complain. Which Darko did.
He should have prepared and worked twice as harder. That’s on him. He played behind some seasoned vets he could have learned from and developed his game. So by the time he does get significant minutes? He takes the lg by storm.

Gil brought up a point that people leave out when discussing the Pistons in 03. Any pick that went there would have had a hard time. Larry Brown didn't play rookies and he has always been that way. Also, it would have taken a whole lot for Carmelo to win the SF job over Prince. Brown would have valued Tayshaun's defense over Melo's scoring ability. And Brown would've pulled Darko if he tried what Gil did.
I love to hear the player’s perspective on these things as opposed to the network “analysts” that never even shot a damn free throw.
K Mart was ALWAYS contributing to winning for his teams. He was a defensive specialist and enforcer when those guys were needed in the league. Plus he wasn't an offensive liability.
I forgot that K-Mart was a #1 pick. He was a good, hard-playing, fan-favorite player. I was really sad when he left our hometown team in Jersey!

3:50 PFs were stacked in 2000s. I can't think of any other era that had 3 All-time greats at the same position (Duncan, Dirk, KG) each winning a MVP while all are in the Western conference. Ironically you can say Kevin Garnett ran from the grind his last year in Western Conference was 2007 when Dirk won MVP and Duncan won his 4th NBA title.

Kenyon Martin was at least a 3 time allstar in the east had he stayed there he was never the same after he broke his leg in college. He was a freak athlete with a mean streak and was Shawn Kemp 2.0. Had he not got hurt he probably was a 20 10 player. He's humble and he knows he was blessed to still go number one so by default he gave 120% effort but that's the type of player he was anyway. Look him up in college. He was similar to Zion Williamson and is an example how players can get somewhat forgotten 25 years down the road. Kenyon was an absolute nightmare coming out of college and is one of the what ifs in NBA history. He had a great run regardless but his career was riddled with injuries that started on that lob attempt in Cincinnati.

Professional athlete contracts. I feel contracts should be in increments of 2 years or 4 years but if you sign 4/5 years the player has to stay put. You can make more if you sign the 4 year bexaise of the commitment.
What do you think about Foul out rule. I feel players should not be able to foul out a game. If yoi want to punish tram for fouling after 5th foul for player give 3 free throws for each additional foul the player commits then the team has to decise if its worth it to play said player. It would be intriguint to see this play out in my mind and the strategy thay would come from it.
