Make Sure to Ask This! When Ordering Your F150 Lightning

- This is my timeline of when I reserved the Ford F150 Lightning EV and when I was able to convert my reservation to an order during the wave 2 of Ford's email. Was there a markup? My original plan was to get the Lightning Pro, but that did not happen.

Just found your channel and subscribed. Looking forward to seeing the progression of your Lightning order, because some day I may do the same thing. Thanks for the video and good job.
The one question I was told a long time ago to always ask is: "What is the final 'out-the-door' cost and what are the individual charges and/or discounts (e.g., Ford/Dealer incentives or discounts, EV tax credits including state credits, etc.)?" If you do not ask to see this, you may be taken through a confusing process where it may not always be clear what is being charged and you may possibly miss out on some of the incentives.
Good advice Skip! Thank you.
Great to hear some first hand news about this process. Looking forward to keeping up with your Lightning journey. I want to have hope that I’ll be invited to order this year, but I’m doubtful since it’s in such high demand and I didn’t place my order until 5/30. We’ll see!
Thank you! I appreciate that. I think if you have your reservation, you are way ahead of many people who can't even put in the reservation anymore. 5/30 is still pretty early too. So far in my experience, Ford is making it way too easy to still cancel even after you order the truck. Come spring, there will be more cancellations. I hope you get that email from Ford soon!
I'm not counting on getting one any time soon because I ordered around 8/30. My guess is some time in 2023 or 2024.
My was done in November …. 😩
Wow so much information , great i placed my reservation 11/28/2021 and still have not gone the invitation as we are on labor day weekend.
Our orders are almost identical. I received my configure e-mail yesterday. I went with a base XLT with a bed mat, tailgate lock and floor mats as the only options. The total build came to $55,034 w/destination fee.
The only thing I might change before it goes into production is the exterior color. I’m on the fence between Ice Blue, Oxford White and Rapid Red.
Booyah 👊🏽😁, look into Tim Bratz from Long McArthur Ford in Salina Kansas. He has a lot of video, and is kind of the unofficial guide for Ford and ordering.
Congratulations on getting your order in and being first for an XLT.
OTD out the door cost.
Look at your lariat and check the fee’s. Destination and delivery looks high ( that covers from the plant to you picking up) have them break it down showing what each fee is.
I also couldn't get a buyer's order from my dealer. Idk why they make it seem like they don't know what we're talking about. ALL WE WANT is proof they're not going to jack up the price!
Hey Joseph, right! They wonder why we don't have a lot of trust after "selling out" the Pro trim level without 99% of people not even having a chance of ordering one. LOL.
Congrats on the order. It will be interesting to see how the transaction settles. It’s all about what it cost to walk out the door.
Thank man! This is indeed interesting. Even though I have an email from Ford saying my order went through, it won't feel like I ordered the truck until I drive away with one... LOL
Good video! Invited to order 2022 MY Lightning on 4/12/22. Only Lariat and Platinum choice. Chose base Lariat standard range because of the $7500 tax credit that may run out.. My dealer is $0 ADM and no junk accessories. MSRP = $70,000. Now the wait for my truck has started.
Thanks Pat! Congrats on your order. Ford seems to be very committed in trying to get these EVs out. Hope the wait is not too long for us.
When I completed my order as an online order there was a field called difference from total MSRP. This difference was the mark up and the dealer confirmed through a phone call all the pricing. A couple recommendations ...You may want to add the Pro Power Onboard - 9.6 KW to take advantage of the mobile power and home power feeding options. Also, I added the max towing package as it adds additional battery cooling too. $56,764 and not all that much more then what you configured for some purpose built options.
That's a good configuration. I can't change my order with the risk of delaying the truck, but this comment may help someone. Thank you. I'm in a unique situation where I will not be able to power my house with this truck so I went with 2.4 kW. Interesting spec about the added cooling though. When I get the truck to do the review video on CZcams, I'll try to cover the topic of heat and cold issues on the non max tow package battery.
I reserved on March 20th and got feedback from Ford that day. Other than being approved for credit for a certain amount, I've not heard a thing. My dealer did say that they had a single customer put in an order in the first wave.
You're probably pretty close from getting that Ford email. Once you get that email and put in the order, at least you would be ahead of most people in the buying process. Interesting how each dealership is treating the orders so differently. Hope you get that email soon.
Congrats! Still waiting for our email!
Thanks! Hope you get that email soon!
When pricing came out and I saw that the Lariat I wanted was going to cost me almost 75k I about passed out on the floor. Absolutely ridiculous. I ended up filing for a refund of my reservation. These electrics have a LONG way to go. One MAJOR caveat to owning something like this in these insane times of shortages is that if something goes wrong with the truck, it could literally be out of service for MONTHS waiting on replacement parts. The supply chain is so out of balance right now and won't even be close to pre pandemic levels for at least two or three years. It is hard enough getting a new vehicle right now....but most people don't have a clue that getting the parts in a timely manner for those new vehicles can be much worse. I hope everything works out for you. But for me it just wasn't worth the 75k and possibly having a very expensive paper weight sitting there waiting on parts. This vehicle is so new and most likely will be plagued with multiple problems the first few years.
Haha I too was one of those people who tried to configure a Lariat and passed out on the floor. You're right. This is not a regular truck purchase for the first year(s). There are some down sides I need to be able to justify to get this truck in 2022. One of that justification for me is the CZcams channel(s). I want to be able to make some really good review videos regarding this truck. If the parts take forever to arrive, that's going to be part of the channel too. I'm just glad it shares a lof the same part with gas powered F-150s. (I can't imagine getting a Rivian with even more special parts).. We shall see. You'll see if it works out. :)
Congratulations on the channel. I am here in Utah. My dealership emailed me the link to order on Jan 5the and said to send my order back to him on pdf which I ordered on Jan 6th and let him know what I ordered. The salesman said I was the first one to respond and he would enter the order for me. It is Feb 5th almost a month and I haven’t heard anything from dealer or the ford. Am I supposed to pay deposit? I am worried that my line is pushed back or something? Any thoughts. Thanks
You have to sign off on the build sheet and they will email you from Ford saying they received your order
My dealer told me I am #40 out of 60 on the reservation list. So, I'll probably have to wait awhile before they try an empty my pockets.
Hey at least you got your reservation in. It's all waiting game for us. LOL
When I ordered my 2022 Ford Maverick, i got an order sheet, and purchase agreement, this is what you need to get. My purchase agreement states every fee and tax down to the penny. Once you have this signed purchase agreement, they cannot change the price or add fees, even if Ford raises the MSRP. For example, I ordered a fully loaded Ford Maverick Lariat and Ford has raised the MSRP on that Vehicle + packages by over 2K, but I have purchase agreement for the MSRP at the time of me placing my order, I will only have to the pay the original lower price when my vehicle comes in. Go back and get this, or they will try to charge you more later on.
Thanks for that Brendan! I'm going to contact my dealer. Hope this comment helps others too. I appreciate you!
Was purchase agreement a standard form from your dealer with a spot for General Manager to sign? The form I have seen has only a spot for buyer to sign.
@@Tooradj mine only had signature field for the buyer and no field for sales rep nor GM. For some reason my dealer is not budging to give out a purchase agreement\buyer's order sheet at this stage of the purchase. Best I could get was an email stating what their fees are, which is one step above word of mouth. :)
@@EVTruckLOG email is a better document.
Good for you! Hope you don’t get screwed by the dealer.
Thanks Brian. I can only hope. If not, people will at least get a video out of it from me. LOL
Did you get markup price from the dealer?
I put my reservation in on 5/22 and I was eyeing the XLT w/extended battery. But when they released the build and price and it required an extra $9500 package in order to get the extended battery, I canceled my order. I couldn't do an extra $9500. So I went to my dealership to cancel the order and place an order for the Maverick, which hopefully I'll get by the summer.
You and many people Joe. It’s a lot just to include the extended battery. Maverick is also a sweet truck. Hope you got a fair deal on it! 👍🤙
@@EVTruckLOG MSRP plus the cost of tags, title, etc. No extra mark ups.
If I understand correctly the lighting was unveiled in may 2021.
Cybertruck was unveiled November 2019.
Can’t wait to hear more about real life lighting performance !
Can’t believe it’s been that long. Tesla definitely woke up these truck manufacturers. Me too! Really excited to be able to test out the regenerative breaking on the Lightning & how the range really is.
I'm finding the reservation to be bogus. The E121 notation next to the deposit (reserved 14 months ago;$100) states "Reservation does not guarantee vehicle delivery nor priority for ordering a vehicle...". Meanwhile the Lightening is available at dealerships online, with huge markups, thereby negating the definition of "reservation; setting aside for future use". Nothing in this process was "set aside" such as cost nor any priority whatsoever. My MSRP price "guarantee" was not in the form of a contract therefore, in legal terms, it does not exist. Essentially unless it is proven that my"guarantee's" of cost, priority, etc" i received in emails is honored then the reservation process is meaningless. Prices just went up. Time will determine the outcome. I'll likely just buy online....or chose another vehicle. My advice is to enter into a binding contract when making a deposit.
I have found several advertised at MSRP. I'm SUPER paranoid about those hidden fees. Just don't want to be shocked, and angered, by last minute price disclosures. I am using a term I call "off the lot" price. That is, I pay THAT and take it off the lot. Done. No doc fees, freight, or other BS.
I’m not looking forward to that feeling either but looking forward to buying this truck off the lot. I may use that term if they start adding other things. That date is coming very soon.
The buyers order sheet lists all fees and taxes. Asks for it just so you know how much to finance and no surprises. Congrats on your conversion.
Thanks J D. I got an email from the dealer with all the fees. That's the best this dealership will do. If there are any surprises, you guys will hear about it for sure! :)
I just ordered a mach e and my buyer sheet looks exactly like that. They did charge me the 500 deposit
What dealership?
Time stamp on my preorder is 9:36. I am the first and ONLY person at my local dealership to get the wave 1 email. I didn't order until about a week ago though. No real rush on my part.
Can confirm all the details you're saying. My exact experience save for the deposit. They did take my $500. My dealer is on the up and up as far as orders go. I trust them so far.
I've warned my salesman about marking it up in any creative ways. But Ford is also on your side. I highly doubt you're gonna see any weird markups. Ford is NOT happy about what has been going on with the Bronco.
I can hear the new jingle: "Ford is also on your side". Congrats on your order conversion! We'll see how it all pans out! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Did your dealer mention anything about the no sale for one year clause? Did you have to sign that? Are they making you sign that?
Hi John, yes they said I have to sign it but not until I purchase the truck and get the keys. It will be one of the final steps for my dealership.
@@EVTruckLOG did you ask them specifics about the language of what they are making you sign?
I'm torn between this and the Cybertruck... CyberTruck is a much better truck and won't rust. Better battery and longer range, waaaay easier to charge with all of the Super Chargers around. But the F150 is just so much nicer inside. Based on pricing I think the XLT is going to be around 75k here in Canada or about5 5k more than the projected CyberTruck cost. Guess I'll wait and see when Canadian pricing is confirmed.
Hey Ron, I was interested in CyberTruck too until I saw how many reservation they already had. I had 2 aluminum body F150 so far in road salt infested area and had no rust issues on the body. The frame and underbody parts needed to be painted. Love to see what truck underbody looks like in Canada. These trucks are not cheap in cost for sure.
@@EVTruckLOG My 2017 F150 was covered with rust underneath in 2020. It’s a known issue with the current generation of F150s because it’s exposed steel not treated or galvanized. Ford is taking heat m and I’m thinking they’re going to address it. I love the interior of the f150s so much more. Tough choice.
I’m a tesla fan and owner, but I am starting to wonder if they are really going to make the CT. They are really struggling to figure out how to much this affordable/profitable. There’s no doubt the impact the cybertruck announcement made..,it really kicked chevy and ford in the pants to get them moving and it worked! So I could see Tesla justify canceling its CT with this justification that the announcement alone it accomplished goal in accelerating transition to EVs.
@@MrSpuzzz yup. Could see it getting cancelled also. But at the same time I think about the $120,000,000 (1.2 million reservations x $100 USD) they have in reservations… that’s a lot of money to be sitting on for all these years. It would be a terrible for Tesla not to produce it at this point.
@@EVTruckLOG I pre-ordered a Cybertruck as well. We can expect a huge price increase from 2019 MSRP’s however. I think the Dual Motor will be the entry level model and will be priced around $65-$75k by the time it goes into production.
I ordered a base XLT Lightning as a stop gap BEV pickup until my Cybertruck arrives. The Lightning resale value should be excellent since it’s a limited production vehicle with high demand and low availability.
Hi! I had a 9:35pm time stamp on 05/19 and still did not get an invite into the 2nd wave and just cannot understand what Fords process is for sending out invites as I thought it was supposed to be by time stamp order! Does anybody know why having an early time stamp doesn’t seem to matter? Thanks
Hi Cameron! You were way before me on the reservation then. I think so called "wave 2" didn't have a lot of order invites either. Also I heard that each dealer can move some allocations around depending on how many reservation they have (I believe I saw this from a Ford Dealership CZcams channel). If you don't get an email on the next wave, (Feb 3rd) there may be other determining factors. My dealer had 150 reservations so yours would have to have lot more than that? I'm sure you have already, but if you haven't try to gage how many reservation your dealership already have (if they don't give out that info, ask which wave you are in). At least by asking you can get on their radar and start the conversation. Hope you get that email from Ford soon!
I had my reservation in at 10:07pm on 5/19. Two days before wave one, the sales manager sent me an email saying that my reservation had 'prioritized to convert'. I thanked him via email and sure enough I was wave 1. I later found out that was the only allocation for this dealer and that my dealer got zero allocations for wave 2. The sales manager told me that I was the only reservation holder who contacted them prior to the order bank opening and expressed a desire to be the first person who ordered a truck (This was back in October). I am so not worthy, but that is my story.
@@KLFaber you are a lucky guy! Excited for you!
I really want the pro model but have no clue when it will become available
I hear you Dylan. Ford CEO said Lightning is sold out for 2-3 years. Hope you got your reservation in. It will be very interesting to see if Ford will continue that Pro price we know of also.
@@EVTruckLOG No reservation which is a bummer but I may use it as a opportunity to just get a power-boost f150 and wait for lightings to become more readily available.
I reserved may 19 2021 at 946pm and I got in at wave 3
Wow it varies so much depending on where you put as your dealership. Hope you got the configuration you wanted.
@@EVTruckLOG well yes kinda. Now I want to upgrade to extended range lariat vs standard range. Pro charger is 2k alone and ford blue cruise makes it tempting. I'm finding out Monday if I can edit my build. Good luck to you and ur channel
Can you give me the name of the Dealership please? It sounds to me like it’s worth the drive from my state because they are marking them up here in Ohio. Thanks!
Hey Francisco, if you are willing to drive that far, ideally you want to find a dealership that can officially write you a buyer's order sheet with all the fees. This dealership would not. I would also not consider little initialed paper as guarantee MSRP. Many dealerships are charging MSRP especially after that warning from Ford to dealerships. You'll be able to find one in Ohio if you call or email around. One good initial way to see is to go to each of the dealership website and see how much cars are marked up already on their website. If you see $3K-5K + markups already on their existing inventory, that's a red flag before even talking to them.
We didn't reserve till July, now we wait to if we even get to order this year ......
At least you got your reservation in. I just came back from an Auto Show where they featured the Lightning. Bunch of people were interested in reserving it now, but.... they will have to wait for next time the reservation opens.
@@EVTruckLOG well it's for the wife, I have my Maverick hybrid lariat lux on order just waiting for it to get made now....
@@MrSuperman258401 haha that would be a nice collection of Ford vehicles if you have both.
@@EVTruckLOG thanks we both got rid of our mustang cobra's. Currently have a 2020 f150 and 2019 fusion hybrid. So either way we are good...
If that document was not signed by a manager it might not be worth much and also its important to always put a down payment to obligate the dealer to have to sell to you firsteven if you have a reservation. I would be concerned about those two things.
Oh I'm concerned. LOL. No matter what happens I plan on fully documenting my experience. I'm just glad my experience started early for this vehicle and we shall see.
It has to be signed by the Sales Manager of the dealership not initialed by a sales rep. If the dealer gets the car in and adds 5K to the car what are you going to do higher an attorney to represent you. Sue the dealer at your expense. Just walk away. The car dealer needs people to order these cars than if they do not take delivery on the vehicle it goes on the lot and dealer can sell to someone willing to pay premium prices.
Man so much easier to buy a Tesla. Last one I ordered on my phone. Picked it up a few weeks later.
James, I cannot wait until I have that experience one day 😁 This is a critical last chance for dealerships. No one actually likes dealing with dealerships.
Hey I live outside DC in VA and would like to email you some additional questions. I'm connected with 2 dealers for the next round of orders. Contact me. Thx
Lol I'll buy one next year after Ford releases ppl from probation
Good joke, you mean will be sold at 20 grand mark up.
i feel sorry for the dealership a nagging customer like this guy on top of that he is hungry
The Internal Combustion Engine is so VASTLY SUPERIOR as a source of power compared to batteries that ONLY the power and force of government can take them away from the American consumer. Compared to the most advanced batteries available, gasoline has 13 Times the energy content by weight, and 40 Times the energy content by volume. I have no objection to new and different technologies but the marketplace, NOT the heavy hand of government should bring about any change. I will never buy ANY vehicle where the government has to PAY me to drive it.
