    I'll be relocating to Tokyo in a year from now, so that's Feb/Mar 2025 for my studies and eventually work. I'm really looking forward to it but there are some things I'm still trying to solve. I'm not sure how much money I'll need to survive my studies & rent but It's gonna be an adventure. I'll be documenting every step. I have some japanese friends that said they would be willing to accept boxes from me, to make my transition easier but I might consider using a japanese international removal company since this will be one way.

    Thanks, man. Great video. How did you meet your wife anyway? What’s the connection? I would like to move to Japan at some point. Not saying I need to marry a girl first... Ha anyway, this was encouraging, so ありがとう!

      Appreciate you! And great question. We’ll have to make a video on it together at some point, but basically after I moved back to the states I had some friends from Japan at my university. We would meet up and make food together about once a month. The first time I saw her was when we were making noodles 😂, it was a new semester and she just transferred to the school. At the time we were both kind of interested in different people. But the way she carried herself just attracted the heck out of me and she gave me her number, we started hanging out a ton and the rest is history.

    I am hoping to retire in Japan with my wife. I am fortunate in that I have a lot of time to do the research and leg work. We like a lot of different prefectures and Fukuoka is one. If I was rich, I would have places all over Japan. Good luck with your new life in Japan.

      Appreciate it! We love it here in Fukuoka, I feel like there is the perfect balance for us of convenience, natural beauty, & less crowded feel. The summers are hot though, but I guess that’s hard to avoid anywhere in Japan.

    Since you are storing your stuff in the usa, that means you are not staying in Japan 'forever?' I've sold whatever we cannot ship and packed everything else in boxes and shipped it by boat. Took about a month to arrive at a Japan port and the in-law help picked it up and drop it off at our place of stay before we even arrive to Japan. The most expensive portion of our move was bringing our 3 cats over via airplane. That took a year long process.

      Thanks for the comment and valuable info! Our original plan was 2-4 years, but recently we have thought about staying much longer, and we may end up shipping the rest at a later date.
      We considered shipping everything by boat but we didn’t know exactly what we needed, but that is helpful to hear that as we might do that if we decide to stay here indefinitely. I’ve heard pets are the biggest hassle, and it’s hard on them, so I am glad we didn’t have to deal with that this time around!

      @@jamesricks Pets were quite expensive. The route we took was the cheapest and it wasn't cheap. At the time, one of my cats was at the peak of age where traveling by plane my be an issue. Though the vet told us she should be ok after examining her. All 3 have past now, but I am sure they had a once in a life time experience living in 2 different countries.

      Hey sorry for the confusion, that’s about how much rents are in our new city, Fukuoka Japan! But the rooms are obviously much smaller & utilities and appliances tend to be pretty pricey!

    • @jamesricks
      @jamesricks  Před 2 lety +1

      In Idaho it’s definitely still cheap though, for that size you’d be between $900-1,500.

    Relocating your pets to Japan will be an issue. But not as bad moving pets from Japan to UK.

    This is at least somewhat hopeful for someone who lives in a third world country who wants to move to Japan eventually, haha. It's always depressing as hell to come across videos which for the most part mention you need $8000 at the very, very least.
    You might not be able to speak to this point, but is the situation with foreigner discrimination still really as bad when it comes to renting, where one could end up paying at least half a year's rent to a full year's rent upfront in addition to the key money, security deposit, maintenance fees, etc.?

    • @jamesricks
      @jamesricks  Před rokem +1

      Most landlord’s are hesitant to rent to foreigners here. Part of what they fear most is the language barrier, but also they fear people leaving and not filling their contract. I think it’s more of a fear of visa stuff than race, but I could be wrong. There are affordable “foreigner friendly” apartments most places, that offer some translation, shorter leases, furnishings etc.
      My wife is a Japanese National, and we put her as the “primary” on important things like car purchases, lease, etc. That puts me at an unfair advantage, so I admit I may not be the best person to ask.
      If you’re moving to Tokyo you’ll definitely want to set aside more money, but there are always ways to save.
