  • I am heading to the border between China 🇨🇳 and Vietnam 🇻🇳, and spend a day trip in Vietnam. I am in the city of Dongxing in southern Guangxi just at the border with Vietnam. The city directly goes into Mongcai which is the Vietnamese border town on the other side of the river. In this region three languages are spoken Cantonese, Mandarin, and Vietnamese. I am checking out the city, the people and their food on the Vietnamese side.

Vietnamese customs like to harass visitors from China for money because to the Vietnamese, that's a kind of "getting even" with China and Chinese. I will be very blunt here: Vietnam has a very poisonous antagonistic attitude against China, because that was how the modern Vietnam nation was formed, by appealing to the concept of "nationalism", that has been achieved by painting China as their arch nemesis since ancient days.

A very lovely trip crossing from Dongxing into Vietnam. The two cities seem like one country, yet local people can speak Chinese and Vietnamese. I like the sight and sounds of street food vendors as well as the local market. What an array of snacks! I'd love to try them too. You did an excellent job in explaining and describing the taste of each and every snack! The ugly side of CIQ is quite normal in border cities, but you handled the situation very well. Your handling of challenging experiences is consistently admirable. By addressing them, you're clearly not making a blanket statement about Vietnamese people.
Such tourist scams are unfortunately prevalent worldwide, not due to inherent badness or greed, but rather stemming from issues like inequality, injustice, corruption, or flawed political systems.
I firmly believe in the inherent goodness within all individuals, a quality that shines through beautifully in your videos. ❤️

"Such tourist scams are unfortunately prevalent worldwide" -- what did you mean?
Not many countries have such a practice to harass visitors at customs to pay bribery to be let in. Vietnamese have been targeting visitors from China for decades. Vietnamese customs used to do such bribery things even at airports against Chinese and Viet Kieu, but because airports are more international and so more cramping down. However, land border crossings with China are still big "attack zones" against Chinese, and quite a few Vietnamese feel that's kind of okay, as a means to get even with China and Chinese over geopolitical conflicts.

    • @ANorwegianFellow
      @ANorwegianFellow Před 4 měsíci +4

@@dantse2012able Maybe I should've phrased it to just "tourist scams are unfortunately prevalent". I simply meant that where there are tourists, there are opportunities to take advantage. And that taking that opportunity doesn't mean you are bad or evil. It usually means that your choices are limited.

I give great tribute to Chinese founding father Mao, and the succeeding leaders to date. In 1960's , I had seen the documentary under Mao's leadership, the people constructing terraces on the mountains for farming with premative tools, and carrying stones for construction of terrace walls & earth for filling terraces by wheel carts and by the help of two baskets hanging on either side of worker, tide to a wooden stick on the shoulders. Modern China owes to that generation's hard work.
Keep it up great & brave little Chinese. Keep smiling.

I'm Vietnamese living abroad here. When I go to Vietnam. I also have to paid the border fees otherwise I'll have to wait for about 30 minutes. If you don't want to wait. The best method is put about 70 Yuan (equal to a meal) inside the passport. When they open your passport they will take the money and not give you a hard time. Tier 1 city like Ha Noi, TPHCM, Da Nang are quite expensive now. If you go to tier 2 city you will have a better exploration and living standard are cheaper. Including hotels, food, markets ~ Sorry about your bad border experience. The custom often makes money this way but once you past the gate and go to Tier 2 city and country side. Thank you for these amazing vlogs from Guangxi. My wife is from Laibin in Guangxi and I have travelled there with her a number of times. I've crossed into Vietnam in Dongxing and it's great to see the bridge with all the traders on again. It was a lot busier on the day I crossed!

15:10 Some unconfirmed source said there was a time in Vietnam (1940s) when happened a fresh milk shortage.Someone name Giang came out with an idea to use egg yolk in replace milk. And thats how the sweet creamy foamy tiramisu alike coffee came from. The one with chocolate and ice, taste the best so to speak. However concerns rise among coffee lover that the eggs to be used should be pasteurized egg for hygiene reason.

Some years ago I went on foot on that bridge the opposit way: Vietnam to China. Itwas like going into an other world: reactions of peopl, language, scripture( so mysterious) , habits. As a Breton I still felt familiar with people ( many vietnamese still speak french), cooking: baguettes and breton pancakes, wines a.s.o.. But entering C8na was entering a new planet.😮

So fascinated with how u brave through not paying. It's cool to watch :). Scam happens in most borders, including extended borders. It is ok to walk out, bargain out, or pay out. It is not ideal, but it is a good entry test to identify the type of tourist u are getting. U did good - definitely among the 20%. Kong Hei Fa Choi!

Hello Yan and all the best wishes to you and your family for the new year!
As usual I enjoyed your presentation of the very nice fooooood ... especially as my wife sent me pictures from a regular chinese new years evening Dinner 🤣
And also the hint with the vietnamese customs ... I will carry that in mind, when wife and me will go there.
If you want to enjoy a nice cup of coffee in China, please do yourself a favour and avoid the buck with the star in front of the name ... that coffee is a threat to your senses ... try the small coffee shops run by chinese people. They are much better as far as my experience goes.
Can't wait for the next videos! Keep up the good work.
