My dude!
I love all the piano love on this man. Richard Blumenthal is the guy! He's actually the only american guy in the band who didn't go to Berklee! He's super nasty and he has a cool jazz project (that I was happy to play drums on) called Blumen!
So I actually write a lot of the insturmentals for this band on Guitar Pro (simliar computer software to Finale, Sibelius, Musescore) and then it gets sent to the boys for arrangement and harmonic choice advice. I think because I'm so close to the music on the writing side of things it really makes thinking of parts a lot easier as I'm just really close to the process as opposed to a session job where I just have to learn everything on the spot. In doing this, the parts all kind of grow together organically and it makes it less of a chore to remember all the things that are happening!
Also, I never took lessons with Dave at Berklee but he did share a room with Rod Morgenstein (Winger) who I did in fact take lessons from! Dave would pop in from time to time and I swear I chatted with him for about two hours in total over my time at Berklee and he showed a cool finger strretch that has probably kept me from serious hand injuries over the years, the dude is a beast!
As far as inspirations go - when I was a child Chad Smith, Lars Ulrich, and Mike Portnoy were my heroes! :D As I got older and went to college a lot of my peers that ended up being absolute savages on the kit started becoming my motivators - Anthony Barone (Babymetal, Shadow Of Intent, Beneath The Massacre), Nate Smith, Matt Garstka, JP Bouvet, and Chris Coleman. SO many absolute sickos at Berklee that it was easy to get lost in the practice room trying to recreate the sounds from them! :D
It's funny you mentioned Chris Turner I have a pipedream for this summer to learn both Thomas and Chris's parts for Triggered. We will see if it happens! :D

Aviations is painfully underexposed. Seriously. Its hard not to feel genuine emotion listening to these. Theres a lot of great music I adore but there is a genuinely magical quality to some of these Aviations tracks that is unique to them. Top lads that deserve the eyes and ears of the worlds.

It was your first reaction to James that brought me to Aviations. I'm not sure how they flew under my radar, but I'm so glad I found them. James is an absolute monster, but so is everyone else in the band. A true super group!

Andy, you really should listen to some of Aviation's songs as is. These drum playthroughs are awesome, but you are missing the fact, that they have a great singer too. Their song "Outliers (Retrospect)" is one of my absolute favourite songs of the last few years.

This band is simply unreal. After so many years of prog and having my mind blown so many times, I didnt know it could happen again. But it did when I first came across them a couple years ago. And then again. And again. Coma is, somehow, their masterpiece, and that's a HIGH BAR TO CLEAR. Love this video!

I've discovered many amazing drummers on this channel but this guy has that special "je ne sais quoi", the "it" factor. So creative, so musical and purposeful. The Fillmaster should be his official nickname. Impressive stuff!

If you've ever heard the band Dark Tranquillity, this track should sound like an homage. It's like DT goes prog. AVIATIONS is a solid band.
