That circular stick motion Tommy was doing over his head was just him checking he hadn't set his own hair on fire because of how shit-hot he was playing. Salute sir.
I attended a Tommy Aldridge clinic that he put on back in the late 90's in the metro Detroit area in a High School auditorium. His performance was amazing and went on for what seemed to be forever. He was a very polite/humble guy and answered every question and showed how he would come up and approach with drum parts for the songs. The one thing that sticks out in my mind was when he was asked about his endorsements on his kit and all his equipment. He told us when he started out how he used to go for weeks just eating once a day to save up money to buy a new cymbal. Now he said he gets all his equipment (kits/cymbals) for free when he can afford to buy them all. He said it should be the other way around for up and coming drummers.

Saw him do a clinic and he hits the drums harder than anyone I’ve ever seen. He wore those things out. Phenomenal drummer.
Tommy is the elder statesman of hard rock/metal for a reason. I’ve ALWAYS loved and looked up to Tommy. He’s a master and should be revered as such. WELL DONE SIR.

I think I mentioned this in the comments of one of the drumeo videos... but this dude plays like a young person with makeup on to look like an old person. Truly slams the skins harder than kids a third his age.
Such a joy to watch Tommy, even more at this stage of his life. Seems like a really kind dude too. Legend!!

Everything he plays on this is just so very tasteful and in service of what the song needs at the moment. And this is true while at the same time there are a bunch of moments in the song where the drums are absolutely part of what even casual listeners will remember. There are several places here where there is no singing where you could just play the drums and people who are not necessarily musicians would immediately know which song it was. He was as much composer as musician on this track. Randy Rhoads was the same way which is why they made such a great pairing.
BTW, he said waving the sticks over his head or twirling them was his effort to make sure that even people in the cheap seats got something for their money. The guy is as sweet and humble a gentleman as you will find.

I saw this guy in 2004, Porto Alegre (Brazil). Judas Priest and Whitesnake. What a masterclass with Tommy and Scott Travis. Two of my favorites drumers. What a night! Watch out the DVD Whitesnake Live in Still off the Night (London 2004). The drum solo is simply incredible.
Teenage me, just getting into playing bass and dreaming of being a drummer, listening to Whitesnake live at Castle Donnington in 1990. One of the best drum solos I've ever heard and it still gives me chills that it was live on the damn radio 👍🏽

Tommy is one of my all time rock drummers but I'm sure many people have already pointed out that the original recording of Still of the Night off of the album, 1987 was originally drummed by Ansley Dunbar who had NEVER before used a double bass drum set up.

This is how I feel about the most bands in the 80's - they were not just experts in their instruments, their were musicians first.
Try and find video of one of Tommy's drum solos from his time with Ozzy. He does an extended bare hand sequence in it that blew my young mind.
1:46 - main riff - it looks almost as he's struggling to keep the tempo - instead - he's adding groove - precise like a machine but giving it that human feel which creates a tremendous sense of anticipation on every hit ... it's the easiest pattern on earth .... but to play it with those micro adjustments (and be consistent with them) it's a bloody miracle
Tommy's drumming is second to none. His live performances are a religious experience. I had the privilege of first witnessing it on Whitesnake's 'Liquor and Poker' Tour 🤘🏻🇬🇧🖤

To me, Tommy Aldridge is one of the greatest rock drummers to ever live and I say that because of all the bands he’s been in Blackhawk Arkansas, mountain, Pat Travers, Gary, Moore, Ozzy Osbourne, and More The list goes on and on and don’t forget his studio stuff he’s done That’s why he’s one of the greatest.

I met him in 1980 (!!) when he was with the Pat Travers Band at an in store record signing for the CRASH & BURN album. The whole band was there and signed my copy plus the “Live! Go For What You Know” album. We stayed so long talking to them all that Pat’s mgr gave us tickets to the show that night!! Great seats too. - I next saw him in 87’ on this exact tour (1987) with Whitesnake. He’s always been a favorite of mine.
Stadium rock drumming masterclass. He POUNDS those drums. Maybe Mikkey Dee hits harder but not by much.

Never heard of this band, sounds like a proggy Led Zeppelin, gonna have to check them out.
Salt water drums, you'd be right that Whitesnake has a Led Zeppelin influence. They're not really progressive, more glam instead. Coverdale started Whitesnake after he left Deep Purple.
I got to see Tommy live twice, first time was with Ozzy on my birthday, March 23, 1984, in Vancouver with Motley Crue. I had just got my first drum kit that afternoon, Tama/Paiste just like Dave Lombardo who inspired me to ditch the guitar for drums, and since my dad was a huge Black Sabbath & Ozzy fan he got us tickets to the show. It was the first time I'd heard Motley Crue, I wasn't a fan of them but Tommy Lee was pretty decent. Tommy Lee claimed he learned the one-hand cymbal mute technique from Tommy Aldridge.
Second time was with Whitesnake in Vancouver with Faster Pussycat in the summer of 1990, (Liquor & Poker Tour, that's one of the best tour names ever!) we did 'shrooms that night and afterwards my roommate's brother puked all over the counter while ordering at a McDonalds, spontaneous projectile vomiting, it spewed way over the counter, I laughed so much!!!
I’m I have just a fraction of that vigor at 73, I’ll be happy. Oh, and Andrew’s new studio is in his wine cellar.

When Black Sabbath was playing the California Jam in '74, Tommy was hanging out right beside Iommi's speaker stack observing Bill Ward. I think he was playing with Black Oak Arkansas at the time. Of course Ward was just destroying the drum kit and I see that Tommy was paying attention.

Almost too tight to be real. Almost.
The song has so much Led Zeppelin in it. Either way, I find this in a way reasonable, you play drums, get a gig with a band that can pay most of your checks for life, if you're successful and not stupid, you'll look up the adequate challenges to just be among the very best at whatever you're doing - be it tight, groovy, super fast, expressive or whatnot - and you're never going to be short on calls by people needing a session or tour drummer. And can keep doing it and maintaining a consistency as long as possible.
