      I have been doing the neck circles and the chin up.push down. With the cup your hands and press your head back. They are very good for me. Impending a lit if time sewing.

      Hey talk more about nerve compression and cleaning products that destroy your nerves! Also natural sources of Lithium and how to avoid heavy metal toxicity!     I'm 62 and saw the exact video you're talking about. Totally lmao'd! I mean, seriously, how am I supposed to break a board with a jumping wheel kick without spotting! Honestly. It's just like my orthopedist crippling me with his custom orthotics 10 years ago, which ended my ability to practice Tae Kwon Do for nearly a decade. I'm now (finally) back to being unshod as much as possible and using minimalist shoes only when required by the health department - or if the fire ants are awake. My knee pain is completely gone, and my back pain is just a slight twinge. I was bullied into a hemilaminectomy, and developed scoliosis in my lumbar spine. Your stretches and exercises have been a godsend! Oh, and my Asian squat is back and my beer gut is gone! I also don't walk like a duck or clomp around like a 115lb elephant anymore. Thank you for keeping this grandmother's ability to walk her granddaughter to school! You are the best!!!

    Regular neck rotations and other neck stretches over the past year or so has reduced crepitus in my neck to almost none -- at age 80. Thanks for all your videos!

    Neck flexibility is essential to safe driving! That crunchiness in my neck and shoulders is what got me started on my journey to recover mobility and strength a few years ago, and how I discovered YOU. 😍Now I know that if I feel stiff or crunchy, the way to relief is MORE movement, not less. Keep those muscles toned, or you turn into a bag of collapsing bones. 😮

      True. My neck got so stiff that I only used my mirrors to see traffic...not a great idea. I eventually ended up with ringing in my head. Turned out my hearing was fine, but I had bulging disc's impinging on the nerves. The MD said my my neck had gotten tight from too much computer usage. The short tight muscles had caused my disc's to bulge. After a lot of PT and exercises I can now turn my head to see traffic. Am I cured? Well, like diets and birth control, for it to work you have to do it. I could be a little better at doing those exercises and taking those computer breaks.😊

    i'm 67 and never even thought about not rolling the neck for its general mobility. Tip --- hot water on the neck under the shower makes it even easier to do as a regular morning exercise

      I know! At 57 I really shouldn't be out in the garden 5-6 or more hours a day. A wonder that my head doesn't just randomly pop off my shoulders.
      It does make you wonder what some of these advisors do to themselves if their necks are making crunching noises.

    I feel many in the health care profession forget that people are animals. Just look at the flexibility in the animal world. Look at a cat, a dog. Sure, elderly animals do get a bit more stiff and slow, but generally they're still quite limber.

    I've had neck pain for 30 years and it's getting worse. All sorts of cracking and crunching and stuffness. Xrays of my neck show no bone damage. It's weird but scary.

    I totally agree. Nobody should tell you not to stretch your neck-gently. I do neck rolls a lot. Very slowly and the amount by of crunching just makes me realize how much attention it needs. It also feels really good and gets me motivated to concentrate on my breathing, stretching, positive healthy thinking. Thanks Matt. Side note: Japan is on my bucket list! 🌸

    50 is nothing. Being over 70 is nothing…if you get active you will feel better all over. Your body generally doesn’t know what age you are. It really is only all about keeping moving. Just stand somewhere like in your kitchen where there are countertops to grab or hold on to and do some exercises that you remember from school or see on this channel and you will feel better. I have learned so much from this channel, thanks.

    Thank you for this! I would tell my clients who were over 50 or who had prior injuries, to move slowly and deliberately. Don't push it but definitely move your body in those "forbidden" ways. If you focus on what you're doing, think about the muscles you're using and listening to those limits and strengths, you'll be fine. There is so much gaslighting in medical care.

    Hi from Okinawa Japan! I just did these neck movements during the morning “Rajio Taiso” national Radio Exercise for groups in Japan. Im 64 years young and those around me were in their 80’s(they had no problems and did them slowly). But, Glad to learn from you what to do about the crunching.

    Matt! You should say that in first place people need to train shoulders and back. Neck is only after that. The risk of trauma is extremely high!!!

    If it crunches, extend and relax. Stop at each quadrant and extend and relax. If still, do it at each eighth, and more relaxation do it with more sensitivity and more time.

    Pushing against your hand higher (hand higher) helps more. So many details you see/learn by and from doing it!

    When we do neck-rolls in our warmup for QiGong class, I simply do them very gently and slowly. Many of our form movements in the class have the neck involved and a lot of RoM. I would prefer the neck-rolls after the class when I’m actually warmed up! (Some people turn it into a ballistic movement.)

      Omg. Consider a different sifu. I have studied Wing Tsun, Qi Gong and tai chi in China, and the only time I was asked to whip my head around was a dance audition for a cruise line.

    I have Chiari Malformation and have had two decompression and have had c1 lamination and although I had to limit neck movement for about a month after the c1 lamination I have always been encouraged to continue full range rotations. I'm 54 and have always had a very flexible neck due to genetic connective tissue disorder. It's absolutely best to continue to build up strength.

    When California locked down gyms, I did not perform much stretching. As a result, I lost my range of motion of the behind-back-arms(hands)-reach. It took me more than a year to recover this range of motion. With better range of motion, I can now use a nunchuck better. I think our neck mobility is the same. We need to mobilize our neck regularly. And all other joints, too.

    Dear Matt, thank you for all the videos, love your channel! Can you possibly do a video to help periformis syndrome? I can't stand for longer than 10 minutes at a time. I've been doing some of your exercises from CZcams and I signed up for the basic program on your website and plan to sign up for at least Hips 1& 2. But the periformis pain is debilitating. I saw you had one video for stretching it but maybe there are more I did not see?

    Thankfully, I haven't come across that video or I might have sprained my neck from falling off my chair and laughing at how ludicrous it is. From an evolutionary standpoint, I think the human species wouldn't have made it very far if we couldn't move our neck so we could see from all angles from the different dangers that lurked around us! Thank you Matt for putting out videos like this. Love your video exercises and all the information you continue to share. I've learned so much from your videos and my body is functioning at a much stronger and healthier level than ever before. For anyone who might be new to Upright Health, please do like and follow and try out some of Matt's video exercises. They have helped me tremendously - I've gone from experiencing tremendous knee pain where I had difficulty using the stairs to now moving with little pain, lots of mobility, and I can even do the Asian squat with ease. This guy is no joke!

    Thing of it is, 50 or 60 or 80 or whatever, if you drive a car, you need the full range of motion Matt describes. A couple of years ago I began to realize I was cheating at intersections, and curves that weren’t all that blind had magically gotten tighter and tighter. Right after I pulled into traffic and (very) nearly had a bad smash up I started working on my “field of view.” Within a few weeks I could see I was on the right track. Also, my motorcycle helmet suddenly got a wider opening, and my peripheral vision became way more useful. Why 2 years ago? Because that’s when I found Matt’s CZcams channel. PS many of the same exercise he describes as fixing the dreaded “chicken neck” have a real good effect on your head’s range of motion as well. Thanks, Matt! You’ve saved my life and made other drivers much safer than they were before I fixed my head! Yay!

    Any PT that suggests you avoid movements you have trouble with is negligent if not malpractice.
    You should always work on movements that are difficult along with supporting movements in order to improve.

    I have had what felt like bone to bone contacts in my neck, so that’s facets pretty obviously. I just played around with moving my neck smoothly, extending my spine then putting it into the four directions but each time leaning into it extending in the fore side of my spine and the Nurse side and the first side. And then just moving around the way I felt and it didn’t happen again. That’s happened like three times and it’s been a long time since the last time.
    Have faith just by feeling good and moving well that you can undo a glitch that new.

    Know yr own neck & its history & be gentle with it. A good P.T. can teach HOW to stretch your neck & maintain ROM/range of motion safely for you, a unique individual.

      Yes, this is the best comment here. I have cervical spondylolisthesis, so I might be sorry, but I just take it slow and easy. I do have a therapist, too. I disagree with Upright that you need to go that far while fishing. Your shoulder will block the view. My ballet teacher used to ask us if we were looking at our armpits. (Pro tip. Look at the Prince to live happily ever after.)

    lol, the noise is from tight tendons. i have been doing this all my life. i'm nearly 70 and very active. i also crack my spine every day. the key to health is movement. keep moving. stretch. exercise. get off your butt and MOVE!!

    Well, I hear crunching at the back of my neck when I wake in the morning. The crunching is in the connective tissue at the base of the skull and behind the ears, rather than along the spine of my neck. Neck rolling (side to side, up and down, round the clock, etc.) is what I do to stretch and exercise those tight ligaments and I'm better for it every morning. My ankles, knees and elbows have always made noises when flexing, so I don't even think of it as age-related. It's just what happens after long periods of disuse. Warming up with stretches before sports and more strenuous activities is recommended, regardless of age, right? What I think is age-related is reduced collagen and elastin production, which makes connective tissue, skin and arteries, less flexible. Dehydration also reduces flexibility. Rehydrating and exercising resolves the snaps, crackles, pops and stiff head for me. It hasn't killed or maimed me yet!

    The rolling behind the neck is not good for me. I also try not to crane my neck back unless I am in a forward lean (then gravity doesn't have an effect). I do most other movements like look left / right or ears to shoulders and roll to the front. I also do static or very slow exercises with a weight in all 4 directions.

    It's actually ironic that your channel is called 'Upright Health'. One of the healthiest things you can do for your body is to hang upside down. Everyone spends 99.99% of their lives in an upright position, with gravity pushing down on their joints and spine. It's a good idea to do the opposite from time to time. I strongly suggest the use of inversion tables to maintain good spinal health. You want to practice good spinal maintenance in your younger years, before you get too old to be able to handle something like an inversion table. It will pay huge dividends as you get older.

    I have started all my yoga classes with neck rolls over approximately 30 years, and initially, most people hear crunchy noises, but with regular repetitive practice, they dissipate.

      @@hillelhalevi I have many issues in my neck and spine, the newest of them diagnosed being cervical instability.
      The two things (neck issues & vision) absolutely are connected. The optic nerves runs through the muscles over the first two vertebrae and that attach your skull to your neck. I get dizzy when I move my head too much, even if I am sitting down. My neck is so unstable it barely holds up my head.

    Well, I do that. I have spondylolisthesis in there and do hear crepitation. BUT that's not the reason I heard it's bad. I heard it causes more wear to the joints because it combines rotation with flexion or extension. (in comparison with just going front to back or side to side) So I might be sorry. Listen to better physiotherapists, and take care as always.

    I've had neck problems since at least the age of 40 because of desk time and overall neglect, and I do comprehensive movement therapy all the time on it. The last thing I will ever do is stop working to keep those muscles strong and flexible in every dimension.

    I was lead to believe years ago that the "crunching" was simply uric acid crystals and by rolling the neck you are actually breaking them up and helping to get them removed. The rotating helps nutrients and hydration increase to help the lymphatic removal of the uric acid.

    Rotating the neck has high risk for old people. My friend’s father went to the hospital after this casual exercise. True story.

      Walking on stairs, flat ground, and light exertion is also HIGH RISK if you don't train and maintain the ability to do them. Barring accidents and specific diseases, turning your head and being able to walk are skills you can MAINTAIN and RETRAIN.

    I hear noises in my neck when I roll it - it's loud, totally freaky, like crushing a big bag of rice krispies - but it feels good. I'm convinced that it's stress-related, maybe the muscles tensed up/contracting (?) and the rolling helps to massage them out?

    I work class half late. It has been the many many physical therapies surgeries, broken bones, yada yada yada but they are not all equal and some of them are completely incompetent.😮 you have to look at them and think do you want to be like them and if the answers no move on save yourself a lot of time

    When I do the upper back and lower back and head against the wall thing , my head is about four or five inches off the wall.It makes me think that neck exercises should be different for me.

    Hey talk more about nerve compression and cleaning products that destroy your nerves! Also natural sources of Lithium and how to avoid heavy metal toxicity! Alot of being wrong discated in rural areal getting their way to our stok and causing news born deformations and adult's neural problems! And how about the syntethic/biotic pepidites that are being constatly avertasing in the media? People are losing their hability to syntetyse than in ribossomes?     lmao at the description of the dangerous move - how’d an alleged professional get to the conclusion that if it makes noise = danger? i’m glad that’s false, as my theory is that if neck movements make noise, the keep doing it until the noises stop. luckily my head hasn’t fallen off yet & no one i’ve advised has come back to sue me
    for malpractice yet.

    Sounds like walking on sand on a board in my neck. I had undiagnosed Lyme disease and was unable to turn my neck for 25 years. After treatment i now have movement but it's noisy.

      Please provide some kind of reference for this alleged cause and also for the offered treatment. If the treatment is surgery on your neck or NEVER MOVE YOUR NECK, then you can make your own decision. I'll ALWAYS choose more mindful movement over medication or surgery to numb or "correct" an alleged structural deformity.
      Ultimately, motion is lotion. Nobody gets stronger and more mobile by moving LESS.

    When you get old, the space between your cervical vertebra gets smaller and at the edges spur alike structures start to develop. With these exercises you are munching the roots of your nerves in there.
