I once visited one of those truck trials and was invited to ride in one of those 8x8 Tatras with a crew cabin. Not in a competition section but while moving the truck from one end of the area to another. And the driver DID NOT use the roads but used shortcuts over hills and so on. Just to show of. My conclusion: that thing didn't have nearly enough grabbing handles in the cabin!!!

@@michalcerven2384 Also it refer there is no a truck with capability like TATRA the bigest seacreat is in drives, the unique design fully enclosed sharfts mean you cen get stuck on rorks and enbackments without damaging the drives as long you can get wheels to grip you will ride.

We used those old 8x8 Tatras in the Army to pull T-55 soviet tanks out of the mud.
When you were saying don't tip to the guy that rolled over, he was trying to go through a gate.. The sicks you see them running over are gates that they have to try and go through.. They don't really care if they roll like you saw. Just get through that gate

I love how all the trucks, apart from the Mercedes, were from Tatra, I was recently at a similar event here in the Czech Republic and seeing it live is an incredible experience.

Tatra 813 and 815 are very popular trial trucks here in east germany aswell, alongside IFA W50 and L60

@@surprisingskodaskoda9355 A lot of them can't deal with Australia, working hard all day in 40*c + temp. The Army takes time to go to the trial to find new trucks. The Army Did have Unimogs at one stage (FAIL) the much older 6x6 Dodge Power Wagons were just out lasting them. Still have some unimogs, but the Army can't sell them till the speedo reads 100,000km
Tatra allows such big wheel travel, because of czechoslovak invention of suspension known as Tatra conception which is rigid tubular frame mounted with independently moving (swinging) half axles. It's modular basically from 4x4 up to 12x12 and theoretically more. Also older Tatras are famous for engine whine, which is not turbo as many people think, but it's actually huge fan and belt creating the sound, because older Tatras are simple air cooled engines.
Tatra's are in a league of their own, fully independent suspension on all axels and alot of them have air cooled v12's
Those Tatra 8x8 would make the perfect base for a mobile command unit for SAR teams, especially in areas often hit by hurricanes tbh

Finally the cattle had been rescued with the help of the German Army by using their amphibious tank "Fuchs" which is equipped with a propeller. The tank pulled the cattle trailer forth and back to a higher elevated meadow. This tank is also bought by the US Army btw.

Tatra doesnt have axles, it has half axles. Each wheel can rise and fall individualy.
Technically it´s not a 4 axle 8 wheel truck.... It´s a 8 axle 8 wheel.

I was on similar event in Milovice town, Czech republic. There was modified truck with bus cabin on the back. They strapped you in and it was like roller coaster on wheels in the mud. It was fun.
Fun watching the ones race at high speed too. Across deserts, through jungles & swamps .
Truck trials are so underrated even in Central Europe, their home area.
Some French game dev studio was working on a truck trial game based on the Europa Championship, but apparently they got in development hell and their license expired, which is a shame.

I also watched it there. I even visited one event near my hometown. Really impressive. The video showed more the action scenes. I found it most interesting when they circled the trucks around the gates at very low speed and much control.
I spent a year in military and drove quite a few different trucks but 8X8 were by far the most fun. They just dont care unless you are in some horrible situation. But granted, they are expensive and we never got to abuse them like the regular 4X4 trucks.

i watched truck trails on eurosport back in the day it was pretty wild
hey, so for this kinds of events, there is an actual course and you can see that the drivers have to cross some gates. It's a race so they have to go quick and also they get time penalties if they touch the gates.
Gotta love algorithms, just came across the short videos of a couple of the TCM drivers giving you a shout out and even the legend Craig Loundes

Man, if you want to see some oldschool offroad trucks from Europe, there's a thing called STAR 266. It's an old military vehicle and you can find a lot of videos on how it performs.
The fun fakt about Tatra that it's wheels always under engle (especially when it's empty) because of transmission and suspension

These event are actually competitions. These trucks must go a given route thru the terrain. The small wooden stick you can see near the trucks they are markings for the route. There are are also referee they look if the trucks touch these sticks and then give points. Every time they have to back off a little they also lose points.

The fun-part is that they are not allowed to touch the sticks stuck in the mud. They get penalty-points for that. That's why the driver steered up the hill before the truck rolled.

The last part of "Elbingerode" "-rode" means a clearing in the forest. The verb "roden" in German means to clear (trees). Of course you pronounce the vowels in a German way, so rohdeh.

I was at the event and I'm even in the video. The purpose of this is to drive a large truck through a narrow, marked course without destroying the poles

These are Europa truck trials. in Eastern Europe they have a small competition Extreme truck trials. Even more impressive.
You should note the rules. They have to navigate between wooden poles, not hitting it. Not reversing, and so on. It is not just driving in the mud.

It was Truck Trail, but ITTM (International Truck Trial Meisterschaft) a german competition. They hit there so much poles because it was raining 3 days in the row. I am a team member from the Mercedes. Next year I drive it my self in Europa Truck Trail.

Just after new year watch the Dakkar Rally. The trucks are restricted to 86 miles pr hour. The cars are restricted to 112 mph. In the desert that makes the Baja look like a joke

They look even pretty the same. 7:13 Do you see these wooden sticks they put in the way? When they are flipped over you get penalty-seconds on top of your track-time. That's why they sometimes stop in the middle of a climb.

Tatra is only Czechia, it was never Russian, yes, Russia dictated to us what we could build for cars, but they never took TATRA away from us. For communist (cold war)

i used to play a game called 1nsane back in the day. old game. mid 2000's on pc. racing game in cars and trucks (some trucks like these) i always thought the big trucks were cool. sadly they were a bit slow lol.
If I recall, that was the first off-roading game and you could deploy a winch to help you out.
I played it too, there was free play, but also these style courses complete with sticks to form the gates you had to pass through.
