I was present at Goodwood that day, so saw this beast. It was thrilling! The event is called The Goodwood Festival of Speed, and like the name suggests, all sorts of vehicles hurtle around the roads of the Goodwood Estate to race and entertain the crowds, as well as air displays. It is a three day annual event in the grounds of a beautful country estate in West Sussex in the south of England. All sorts of racing drivers, past and present as well as the great and good attend. Even if you do not like speed/vehicles it is a fabulous day out just to people watch. If you google the event you will get an idea of the adrenaline of the day. Hats off to the Duke of Richmond whose estate it is.

The Dakar rally, regardless of which country it is in is a long-distance cross-country rally raid event, in which you will see motorbikes, quads bikes, cars and trucks, competing on the same stages, this year's event in Saudi Arabia will cover almost 4000 miles, 2600 miles of which will be special stages, the KAMAZ will do just over 100mph, off-road, and can put 2000 foot/pounds of torque through each wheel

If you liked this you should check out some Euro truck racing, tractor units with water-cooled brakes racing around car race circuits. They weigh in at 6 metric tonnes, run around 1000hp but are limited to 100mph due to the strength limits of Armco barriers, very close and exciting racing.

if you look on the roof of the truck, it has vents pulling the air in. this will create down force, which will help it to stick to the road. it looks like there are 3 sections, so they may open and close for corning. to help stabilize the center of gravity on the turns.

you need to look for the Paris to Dakar Rally prior to 2008 as they changed the race to be in South America, due to hostilities. the Sahara stage/crossing is always the most dangerous part of the race, due to blind dunes. most of these vehicles carry lots of spares and tools onboard, to change tires and fix chassis along the way.
so are you thinking about buying one to take they kids to school?

  • @Yvolve
    @Yvolve Před rokem

The back half of the Kamaz is just a shell. The cab is the only heavy, tall structure, but the drivetrain and frame are so massive, it still has a low center of gravity. They also set up the suspension for drifting in this video, for Dakar it is way softer and it can roll if it does turns like this. Probably also geared it so it will spin the wheels on a track like this. It's a fully built race truck, so it shares little with a production version, aside from the mandatory stuff.
Also, HP is a calculation of torque x rpm / 5252 and this engine makes an enormous amount of torque, which is what spins the wheels.

    4,500 Nm / 3,300 ft lb
Top speed at race is limited to 130 km/h / 81 mph. But away from race on motorways these have been spotted *cruising* at 160-165 km/h / 100-102 mph. Top speed is unknown, as it is not necessary, no one cares, being stable at 130 km/h is the main importance.
Those shock absorbers are needed to withstand the truck making jumps at high speed, 10-12 g acceleration is common uppon impact. The name at 14:50, Eduard Nikolaev is a 4 time Dakar champion, plus one more as a co-driver.

The absolute King of race trucks is the DAF TurboTwin II. A spaceframe, twin diesel engine truck, with 3 turbo's feeding each engine. producing 1200hp. It raced in the 80's, driven by Jan de Rooij, and it outran the rally cars. There is a famous, although very short, clip from De Rooij drag racing Ari Vatanen in a Peugeot 405 T16 down a flat stretch of desert in the Dakar. They reached speeds of over 120mph/200km/h on sand and the truck outran the car in this bit.
    /watch?v=AWCNnlk8rkU
Disaster is always a companion in Dakar and the sister truck to De Rooij crashed at the end of this stretch, as a bump sent it off into a bumpy area and it flipped doing over 100mph/160km/h. The navigator, Kees van Loevezijn, was thrown out of the cab as his factory seat mounts failed, which nobody thought to upgrade on a 1200hp race truck. He died there. The driver, Theo van de Rijt, and mechanic, Chris Ross, survived but were badly injured. They were flown to a hospital and both survived. Jan de Rooij heard of the crash at the end of the stage, he couldn't believe it at first. DAF decided to pull out of Dakar right then and there, and never compete again. De Rooij was devastated as he was the team captain, but he ended up buying the DAF race team and continue competing in Dakar with great succes.
Here's a French news report on the crash, very graphic, they show van Loevezijn, dead and still strapped into his seat. The French didn't give a shit in the 80's.

Have you thought that there is NO Substantial Weight up High?
Are the wheels in the back ever shown to be complete Rims? A lot of weight there, Weight there is more!
Weight up high, perhaps this is a SPECIAL with A Light Weight Top, Perhaps Carbon Fiber, Looks the same but not proven!
Tires on a dry track, most use SLICKS, in this case the LACK of contact on the Surface helps make this look impressive! I am talking about the tread and lack of contact with the Track Surface! Just thoughts, John, Australia.

Hi from UK. Please wear a fake beard until the real one is captured and glued back on. You need to check out some of the big old Russian trucks in the mud, not racing trucks….just ordinary work trucks driven by vodka induced lunatics. The racing Kamaz trucks aren’t very top heavy, yes the engine is 1000 odd BIP but they don’t mention the torque…. the size and weight of the engine, gearboxes and transmission are huge in order to handle the torque and all of that weight is low down, the cab etc is of low weight by comparison. I used to drive a Fendt vineyard tractor with an air assisted sprayer on the back, it could fit down between lines of trees five foot apart…..so the tractor was narrow but quite long which is inherently quite unstable but this was counteracted by shear size and weight of the engine and transmission system, despite it’s relatively small size it was more powerful than the big New Holland tractors that the company also owned. Keep safe and well, love from UK ❤️🇬🇧😳
