    Hi Lewis, thanks so much for sharing our website in your video! I launched WatchCharts.com a year ago to address the very problem you describe - the lack of transparency in the watch market. Jack. Great work..you have done some through research....very direct approach to your reasoning. Your thought has added dimensions to real watch buyers who buy to use it and not for resellers or grey market people. Anyone who wants to buy a rolex to celebrate their success must stick to retail as I believe you must pay only what the watch maker really values their product. Paying over retail is too much of a risk to take for a investment product. Stick to guns and pay only retail or less if you want to be happy with your purchase. Your analysis focus more on the demand side. We also need to analyse the supply side. Rolex factories are also close during lockdown, reducing further the already short supply of popular watches. In 2008, we didn't have the Rolex factories shut down, so it may not be the right comparison. Just as you said the economy may rebound as quickly as it fell, I think the dip in Rolex prices may not last long. I just got a Omega Speedy full kit new (NOS) 2019 on a strap (I don’t like Omega bracelets) for $3200.00. So if you’re in the market for a watch. Now is the time. Vintage is also a bargain. But the best place to buy the hot Rolex models, is at private sales on forums or EBay. People need money and are selling close to retail. As a buyer you have an upper hand. Haggle and lowball for your new used GLT, Hulk, Sky Dweller, Sub. Daytona steel ceramic will still demand no less than $18k. That will be the exception.

    Nice comments. I have been checking some 10 different watch brands and models for the past 4 weeks and I have contacted more than 50 dealers (shops, AD, on-line, Chrono, independent...) and there was no significant change of the prices, which remained pretty much the same. I am talking about Omega, Tissot, Longines, Tudor, IWC, so not really super luxury brands. It seems to me, that the sellers are not willing to do any discounts yet, they prefer keeping the stock. In fact it was really difficult to get more than 22-25% off retail and many shops had identical final price tag. Those sellers were in many different countries, hit differently by the crisis. But I am asking myself, if there are more than 28 mio jobless people in the USA alone, what will be the amount who really can afford to buy a watch? I did, however see some really good bargains, but those were "dead" brands or the ones so special and expensive that even with a 40 or 50% discount remained unsold. Still some brands are launching new models like IWC recently presented several new watches. I think the real image of the crisis will show as early as in autumn. Let's see how many watches will remain unsold by 2021.

    Everyone's estimated production numbers are way off. Rolex has never revealed their annual production (or anything else about the business). COSC use to report the annual number of certifications per brand up until 2016.
    (www.cosc.swiss/en/cosc/key-figures)
    I believe in 2015 Rolex was issued ~795,000 certs from COSC.
    2015 was a bust year for the Swiss Watch industry. ADs were telling Rolex that they could not compete with the growing grey discount market as many weaker ADs were dumping stock.
    In 2016 Rolex persuaded COSC to stop releasing details cert counts issued per brand (now they only release an annual total number for the whole industry).
    It took about 18 months (Jan 2016 to Summer 2017) for the excess supply of sports steel Rolex watches to dry up and premiums over MSRP to appear.
    It is pretty obvious that Rolex cut production in 2016 to enhance the brand image and get rid of grey discounting practices. They couldn't let COSC spill the beans so that reporting had to be hushed up.
    Rolex is also closing 20 to 25% of all North American ADs to further move the brand "upmarket" as it has been said.
    Well, it definitely has worked. My guess is they are still limiting production well below 2015 levels. In 2019 models such as the 116508 (green dial, YG Daytona) and blue dial men's steel Datejust became "allocation only" which is a fancy way of saying your AD can't order one special for you (all steel sport Rolex are allocation only).
    Patek only makes ~62K watches per year and AP only makes ~45K. Rolex roughly cut production of sports steel timepieces by nearly 150K. That is why you can't get an Nautilus or Royal Oak without selling a kidney.
    Cheers
    ........

    • @AnonymousAnonymous-kv7uq
      @AnonymousAnonymous-kv7uq Před 4 lety

      It is very hard to estimate. The new profitability from controlling/cornering the market and setting an artificially high price has created a huge motive for secondary dealers to "invest" in any new supply (Roman Sharf talks about this in his videos frequently). There has been a surge in demand from watch collectors due to the scarcity artificially created by Rolex at the same time.
      My closest AD who owns a chain of stores throughout the US tells me he hopes to receive an extra 5% each year to his allocated allotment. Their store was in competition with another chain locally. Rolex targeted the area to shrink from 2 ADs to 1. My AD invested millions to upgrade the store and create a "Boutique" within the store. The other AD lost it's license is now closed.
      I'm all for controlling inventory as it helps the brand to retain value. Unfortunately, without Patek style tracking you end up with the "watch scalping" behavior that everyone is so put off about.
      The global economic crash would normally crush this monopolistic scalping practice but Rolex will probably reduce supply this year to offset global demand destruction.
      Happy hunting!

    Whatever anyone says it’s a buyer’s market right now with so many unfortunate forced sellers having to liquidate assets in a hurry to stay afloat. That said there’s so much air in Rolex’s tyres the mothership can withstand the turbulence for the medium term. The greed around the product and the middle men cashing in as demand was tenfold supply has reached a tipping point and just how far secondary prices will drop remains to be seen. Don’t expect a flood of at list ceramic Daytona’s to hit the resellers anytime soon - now if that was to happen, or even list minus, the whole game is gone.

Luxury market didn’t crush right away in similar situation in 2003 when sars happened. It actually changed purchase behavior for a bit. Since money has been pouring into the financial markets, we can see some price reduction for watches in the near future.

    Great common sense advice. I like your cold cool headed, hard analytical approach. We watch nuts operate at 90% heart passion and impulse, 10% common sense logic. Prices are down significantly from the highs. Those people denying this fact are delusional. Having been in the hobby for 30+ years specializing in Rolex SS Sports I’ve experienced several downturns and subsequent recovery’s in the lux watch market. As anyone can plainly surmise the prices for Rolex are still way higher than 30 years ago. Example my first AD purchased Sub date back in 94 was under 3k. Inflation and Rolex’s regular price increases keep moving the prices up overtime and that will never change. The health of the economy at any given moment will affect the prices temporarily, but up to this point with Rolex the prices always recover then subsequently soar to new heights. These are buying opportunities. If you don’t believe me wait 5 years and you’ll see for yourself with some hindsight reflecting. If you are in the market, in a position financially with some disposable cash, your in luck. Don’t try and pick a bottom. It doesn’t work in the stock market and it doesn’t work in the Lux market either. Pick a price point that you’ll become a buyer and snatch up that Rolex you’ve been frozen out of because of the ridiculously high premiums. Trust me Daytona Pandas, Pepsi GMTs, Hulks etc will still be highly desired 20 years from now. Buy what you truly desire and plan on passing it on to your kid or grandkids. As mentioned Rolex’s are not a substitute for proper investing. They are excellent watches by every measure and do hold their value better than the vast majority of brands out there. So you haters just deal with it. BTW, stick with Rolex for your next purchase. A small collection of quality high end pieces is the way to go. If you like Rolex as a brand by all means stick with Rolex. Sometimes variety isn’t always a better thing.

    • @LewisMa
      @LewisMa  Před 4 lety

      very well said, thank you. and thanks for coming back. It'll be a while before i buy another watch (i have an objective net worth rule for myself). I was thinking a Lange. what do u think?

    • @SPQR-Z
      @SPQR-Z Před 4 lety

      Yes having some financial rules and discipline is the proper way to approach the hobby. Also knowing ones limitations and figuring out what you truly want is a must otherwise you spend allot of time thrashing around wasting time/money. I started out with around 5k in my watch fund and have built it up to around 175k. Not good for the amount for the time and effort invested but good for a hobby/part time business. At least I’m not massively negative like my car hobby lol.
      A. Lange & Söhne is one of the top brands out there. Patek is another similar brand that holds value and is always desired. These watches are on another level up from Rolex. They aren’t as generally we’ll know outside the watch enthusiast community but are nonetheless a solid buy. Never personally owned a Lange but handled quite a few. They are absolutely exquisite, beautiful constructed quality watches. If you like them then I would say go for it. It would fit in wonderfully with a nice three watch collection. Great business and special occasion watch. Possibly round out the collection with a diver sports type watch, Submariner or the like. Those along with your Sky-Dweller would make a nice three piece
      Forget to mention. Buy preowned on the Lange

      @@SPQR-Z lol yes, cars and watches; we speak the same language. I put those in my net worth rule also but in the same bucket. Music to my ears, "The Perfect Trifecta." Sub is a little light on the wrist for me, but yes the search continues.

    "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain," said the watch industry to the consumer. Or, was that "Wizard of Oz?" Same difference. Both fiction.
