- I'm back! It's been 4 months since I predicted watch prices falling and now today......Record HIGH Rolex watch prices! Even during a pandemic! I go into my theories as to why this is happening in the 2020 Watch Market and whether or not I think it'll last.

Still don't get how Rolex manages to stay on top. The reps look so damn close, I really don't get why people still by a genuine Rolex for $15,000.

That pretty much summed it up great analysis!! What I don’t understand is why does companies like Rolex that can have the capacity to produce more why don’t they? Rolex does not make limited editions and limit quantities why don’t they jack up production? This is insane with the ability to produce they should be jacking it. 12k watches everyone isn’t buying and very few are but Rolex should be filling this marginal demand. If they don’t they may lose the customer forever. Make hay while the sun is shining is what is say. Luxury watch producers not so sure.

@@LewisMa human nature I have to fight that feeling every time I buy something of substance. I just can’t believe that there are that many people extra that want 12k Batman rolexes that they can’t fill the demand. The fact that they are 12k is a little ridiculous to say the least. Anyone that actually wants to purchase one should be met with open arms. I have a vintage datejust solid gold which I paid half of the 12k for. I thought that was crazy at the time 5 years ago. It has 4K of 18kt gold in it as well. A sports watch that is sold out at 12k they should be running the factory 24/7.
Not all watches price going up. Only Rolex and some other Swiss brand price goes up.

The price will come down. It is because people are not travelling and not spending now. As long as no one chase for it, it will come down .
As long as people are at home, not travelling, not going to expensive restaurants and bored, these watches will continue to fetch record prices.

I still buy from ADs. They said the demand is crazy for high end pieces but not so much for other brands.

Well I can tell you that I just bought a Rolex Sub date from a AD last month at retail BUT I had been saving for a whole yr so when I got lucky and got the call I had the money!

All good points. I believe the closest correlation is with the stock market. The stock market drives consumer confidence, which in turn drives spending, especially on luxury goods. If the market should sell off by 20%, watch prices will fall in tandem.

I was able to pick up a great deal on a F.P Journe perpetual 42mm rose gold just a week into the shutdown. Now prices are going through the roof. I also think that money dirty and clean( Stock Market) flowing into the watch market because of it being a hard commodity.

Unfortunately, you were wrong not once, but twice . All your stated factors where “known” factors back when you stated watch prices would drop. Here’s a predictable factor for you, people who buy luxury watches have the means (expendable income) to do so and will continue to do so (regardless of the pandemic).

I like the humility when explaining yourself. Very cool. The last 10 years have been great for myself as well but it hasn’t always been that way. With this fake pandemic it could get hard again you never know.
My thoughts, early Covid, were that there would be lack of watches, prices up on watches / luxury goods. BUT, I still think the crash has not yet hit. Come November, things may just be different. Markets are currently confused and distorted. A lot of things propped up by Government etc. Just IMO.

I bought a watch at the beginning of the pandemic I think out of anxiety. The used watches now are going for more then what I payed new. I sold a few as well pretty easily. I only have two watches currently but watch prices will not go down because the people that could afford them before can afford more and the people that could not afford them still can't so no effect to the market if anything it will drive it up.

Dealers can’t keep up with stock as its flying off the “shelves”. Also, Rolex prices won’t drop anytime soon and I’d say the prices will keep climbing as Rolex will most probably have another price increase in 4-6months .

This is the reality that one must accept: the Fed is prepared to do ANYTHING without limits to prop up the economy. That’s why the market is up. They will print and devalue the dollar to a significant level. So the money you spend on a watch today will be worth a lot less tomorrow. Rolex is a good store of value as well, it’s like gold ... and gold is going to do very well
I couldn't agree more... Global issues such as pandemics, wars, sub prime mortgage crises, etc. Act as litmus tests for the market to test how far governments will go to back the market. If the market fails, world economies will freefall and the losses would be inconceivable because everyone is heavily betting on governments to bail it out an act as insurance for what would otherwise be natural market corrections... With each passing crisis and bailout, it strengthens investors/ banks/corporations that governments won't allow economies/markets to experience natural market corrections.
