The batt going back up when you stop is due to battery sag, where the load on the batt causes it to show lower, given a rest the batt will recover a bit.

Nice little bike. With the peddles, it's harder to support yourself when going over bumps. The pegs, work better, which are on other models. If you get a spring support for your seat post, (the simple u shaped spring works great), the ride will be much better, and comfortable over bumps.

I have a similar ebike - the Fiido D1. I really rate it - it was a real boon when recovering from surgery. It has a longer seatpost than yours and the ride position is quite similar to a Brompton. Perhaps a longer seat post for yours will give it more utility? I regularly do shopping trips in a hilly area when I can't be bothered to ride my normal bike.

The batteries of these items tend to be of high fire risk, try not to charge them overnight or unattended as there have been several fires in HDBs here in Singapore as a result of the batteries exploding/catching fire. Also they used to be ubiquitous in Singapore, especially among food delivery riders until the Govt banned them.

Hey Cam, I strongly recommend to keep the battery or the bike as a whole outside whilst charging, and don't charge while your not at home (or asleep for that matter). We have had a lot of problems with chinese battery packs for e-bikes, (overheating, melting and a few fires even) at our bikeshop. So just a little heads up!

I would be curious if you could do a "parts bin upgrade" on this bike like Seth's bike hacks did once! I know putting more money into it may not seem like the greatest idea, but I'd be curious if you could get new brakes, new seat, etc and make it a better overall riding experience!

  • @bonzobanana1
    @bonzobanana1 Před 3 lety +8

Illegal to use on UK roads so you'd think Amazon would be prevented from selling them here. However I have to say super impressed with that range. I was expecting a range of about 15km unassisted with 50km only possible by pedalling and using the lightest assist mode. Seems to have decent cell batteries in it.
One negative is those tyres won't last long if you use the bike a lot. Small tyres means more frequent replacement and those are very small. They look like they have fitted good quality CST tyres though.
Many people use a mains socket timer to prevent the battery charger being live for an extended time. Many charge overnight and if there is a fault in the charger or battery circuit such batteries can explode and cause house fires so if the battery takes 5 hours to charge its sensible to limit power the charger to that time. Also charging fully can reduce the life expectancy of the battery cells so some people might charge for 4 1/2 hours to maximise battery lifespan. The reason I mention it as that bike clearly is not certified to sell in the UK and without certification we do not know if the circuitry is safe. Electronic circuits can be designed so that if they fail they do not cause additional damage to the product or cause a safety hazard or they can be made as cheaply as possible using lower grade electronic components in a more simple circuit.
To make that bike legal for UK roads you only have to fit a crank sensor of some sort so the throttle only works when the crankset is rotating. Really it should have come like that and maybe some dyu ebikes come that way.
It would be useful to know your weight and height so people can work out if they will look more or less ridiculous on the bike than you plus get some idea of range. If the bike is 18kg and you are 62kg then you could say the bike will transport 80kg for 45km unassisted so perhaps someone small who is 42kg i.e. 60kg total weight would get 60km or someone who is 102kg so 120kg total would only get 30km unassisted. Obviously that is very simplistic as the higher the current output the less efficient the battery so its more like the lighter person gets 70km and the heavier rider gets 20km but people can get a rough idea what to expect.

A bike with a throttle is classed as a moped.
It'd be no fun to get into trouble about the lack of MOT, insurance and tax on it...
It is dodgy that Amazon are selling these, ebikes which are UK legal aren't much different in price (though finding anything in stock at the moment would be the tricky bit).

    • @ISTMuso

  • @randomnessoftheunassuming

I just got the N. American version (Jetson Bolt Pro) from Costco (CAD $450 + eco fee). The version I got also has a twist throttle, but there is no bluetooth connection or display, and the battery level is indicated via 5 LED light indicator. I'm only around 150 cm tall, so the seat height was fine for me but I was surprised at how fun and easy to ride it is. I haven't ridden a bike for a couple decades, but this bike may actually get me to ride a bit more instead of taking the car. Another thing I like, other than the price and portability, was the modification capability. There are YT videos of people customizing their bikes, to suit their needs and comfort, which is great. Yeah, you can get a full-sized ebike with what you need and want for the price of this bike plus mods, but the stand-out is still that you can throw it in the trunk of a sedan or maybe even a hatchback and take it with you.

Battery meters use battery voltage to determine capacity remaining. Under load the voltage drops lower and lower the more you ride thus the bars going down. When you stop, the battery is not loaded and the voltage bumps up a bit which will make the meter jump up. The meter when the bike is under load is the more accurate measurement.

Aren't those bikes illegal in the UK? You're not allowed to have a twist throttle if I'm not mistaken; pedal-assist only. I don't care, personally, but it's perhaps something that should be pointed out to prospective buyers. I might be out-dated as I've no interest in e-bikes yet as my legs still work normally...I would add, however, that if twist throttles are allowed to propel you to above 3.7mph then the vehicle requires type-approval and is a moped. You'd therefore need a Cat A licence and/or CBT and L-Plates and third party insurance along with, obviously, a registration plate. No longer a cheap toy, just an expensive way to damage your driver's licence.

I bought a full size E trekking bike (road / mountain cross). 28 inch wheels, 21 inch frame. 24 gears. €1000. Battery sits on top of the rear wheel under the rear carrier frame so it looks like a normal bike. Also can be ridden as a normal bike. Good bargains are out there. I ride about 80Km between charges. Not bad considering I'm a big fat guy and need to up and down hills where ever I go. Down side it weighs 27 Kg Battery weighs 3 Kg. I know it is not legal to have a non peddling E bike in Germany. Is the UK different?

Could you add little pop-ups for Canadians and Americans?
Example: Pounds to CAD or US Dollars, Kilos to pounds, etc.

To be fair for what it is it actually looks pretty sick, if you wanna cruise down a beach promenade one afternoon then it’s spot on

Modify it so you can get the right saddle height and a normal reach/ racy position. Then race a car or train across town or something

I just got a similar but much better when it comes to e bikes through Ebay for the total tax included of $641.00 U.S. dollars. It's called an HDTEA and I'm pretty happy with it. Thanks for the video keep up the good work. Thanks.

Very compact would be good for campervan or barge. Longer seat post perhaps for a better ride and change chain ring but without compulsory pedal assistance it's as illegal as a electric scooter. Unless you hire one lol.

In North America we can get the Jetson Bolt Pro for $450 CA and $350 US at a store called Costco. I just bought one at Amazon for $678 CA and I'm returning it to buy the same thing at Costco for $238 CA less. Watch Amazon very closely.

I had one of these for a while. I realised after a few days that it was going to destroy my back, so I traded up for an electric mountain bike. It was fun though!

did you only use throttle until the last bar to get the 48 Km or did you assist it most of the way?

My recommendation is that you remove the pedals and replace them with pegs for your feet to rest on, with enough modifications that thing could go to maybe 70-80 km/h
Why should you believe me? They got bamned in Singapore for that

You should hook up a battery backup to it (like a Goal Zero or something) so it gets charged WHILE you're riding, and see how far it can go. Might be cool. But I'd rather see a bike adventure / travel video than that to be honest haha. The France trip was so rad.
