Producer Irwin Allen helped usher in the disaster film craze with his star-studded, big-budget film of the SS Poseidon capsizing and a group of survivors trying to make it out alive. The Poseidon Adventure would become one of the most popular and successful disaster films of all time.
Over thirty years later The Poseidon Adventure got the remake treatment, not once but twice! I take a look at the 1972 original and the 2006 big screen remake Poseidon.

Finally, Eric Shea is getting the credit he deserves. When watching this at age 7, I wanted to be in The Poseidon Adventure. This was the character I identified with. Eric Shea's singular child performance, he never acted again after this shoot, does not wear out or become annoying. I rooted for him and boy did I cry when Shelly Winters died. I really liked this character.
As a 9 year old turning 10 i feel like if I was there I would have became close friends with Robin.
I remember daydreaming about surviving and correcting the mistakes when I was going to sleep as a kid. This was one of my favorite movies to watch late night in the early 80s
He was on a couple of little house episode who played Jason Laura's first boyfriend
Shea's character was much better & way more interesting than the "Towering Inferno" character played by Mike Lookinland, who played Bobby Brady in "The Brady Bunch".

I totally agree with this review. The original had heart and you develop a genuine admiration for the characters and the actors playing them. This remake was only about the digital special effects. It's the only reason they made it. It was shallow, empty and after the ship tips over, boring.
And the 1972 version is hardly ever boring. Only really the scenes before the party and the sinking.
Richard Dreyfus was the most pointless character I’ve ever seen he added absolutely nothing to the story.
The original had no cgi and few stunt doubles. The cast did everything including the swim by Shelley Winters.
Not a close call. With all due respect to Kurt Russell and the others in the remake... the original rules.

6:31. Sorry, no. This film had five Oscar-winning actors: Jack Albertson, Ernest Borgnine, Red Buttons, Gene Hackman, and Shelley Winters. Winters had two Oscars, and Hackman would go on to get a second Oscar years later. Definitely not a "B-list" group by any stretch of the imagination.
That's the trouble with critics, they can too critical and lose sight of the facts.

The original always wins hands down. I've seen it several times and you always come away having respect for those characters. The other two versions are nowhere near that.
Agreed. And the interior sets post disaster, they recreated sets that so matched the interiors of an ocean liner.

Original all the way!!! Just from the opening chords you could tell it was special. the score means a lot and John Williams composed a beautiful score.
The original had the combined talents of six academy award winners!! I wouldn't classify them as B Actors. As for the remake, besides Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfuss, I had never heard of any of the other actors. The original had many touching scenes that cut your heart to the core. The remake did not.
I totally agree! I do however like Poseidon the remake, but I found Poseidon adventure more daunting and somehow more realistic ( if that makes sence) the scenes were more believable x

The 2006 remake was terrifying, super-fast paced. Very sad. ESPECIALLY the busboy's death and Elena's.

There were elderly ladies in wheelchairs in the front.
I spoke to them.

This review is absolutely right on target with both films. Original is one of my all time favorites, and yes, the remake is full of " I could careless about these characters live or die:..... good review.
The most underrated character from the original and was not used properly in the remake was the water level. It created so much tention. Scary stuff for non swimming, claustrophobic people, that can't hold there breath for long underwater.

What is truly impressive about the original is that all the effects were done for real, smoke and mirror effects and physical stunts and not one pixel of CGI, unlike in the remake. But it's story and characters that really makes a movie gripping and for me the original, seeing it first time without expectations wins hands down. Both entertaining movies though.
I didn't even bother with the remake and after seeing this I'm happy with my decision.

I love how you say Elaina is the most "likable character " but never touch on her character at as someone who saw this movie and loved Elaina I was patiently waiting for you to describe her because she not only had the most back story she was the most sympathetic character
She was the only character I truly liked and I was quite upset when they killed her!
Well, the funniest irony to me was how overconfident that the remake felt it was in the promos compared to the original.... and then it tanked! Badly!!
Yeah, Ernie shouts a lot in the original, but his last rant is my absolute favorite part of the film...'Preacher! You lyin' murderin' son of a *****!...' From fury to anguish. You really were rooting for the characters in this one. We knew next to nothing about the ones in the remake.

I totally agree with your point of view. It's a really proper description of both movies. The Petersen-flick isn't at last really bad, but it's annoying because of the waste of potential.
The original Posideon Adventure will always be the best, no mattee how many remakes.
There’s absolutely NO comparison, in the original you really care about the cast, and they have living legends in it whereas apart from Richard Dreyfus the cast of the remake doesn’t have any wow factors

@@johnkennethwiseman682 Mainly middle age women die in disaster movies. Examples are Jennifer Jones gruesome death in The Towering Inferno and Ava Gardner being swepted away and drowning by a river of water in Earthquake.
@@montygreen6228 - I have never forgotten (nor forgiven) Jennifer Jones' death in The Towering Inferno. I hated that scene!! It stuck with me for years as a child. But you're right, those middle-aged ladies didn't stand a chance!
The original was probably one of the best movies of its time. The special affects were well done and the casting was perfect. My favourite movie as a kid. And I still love it. I think the remake was truly its own disaster!

Although the modestly budgeted Airport (1970) successfully spearheaded the disaster movie craze of the '70s, The Poseidon Adventure (1972) best realized the genre's storytelling potential. When the disaster closes out the first act, the audience gets to stick with one core group of survivors for the rest of the picture and no one else. There's no cutaways to separate survivors following another path, or outside authorities of the shipping company or rescue teams trying to comprehend the extent of the disaster and form a plan of action. Pictures like Earthquake! (1974) The Towering Inferno (1974) and Airport '77 (1977) do that, hopscotching between unrelated characters in separate situations all caught up in a larger encompassing disaster, and one result of that approach is to divide their screen time to such small portions that you barely care if these characters will survive or not. The Poseidon Adventure insists that you get to know its characters enough to see their humanity and care about what happens to them, and rather boldly, has their leader determined to survive end up angrily admonishing God for throwing further deadly obstacles in their path and sacrificing himself for the others. No other disaster epic even comes close to the dramatic weight presented here. On the other hand, the movie feels very old-fashioned for the time it was released, right when the Hollywood New Wave was blossoming. The style of direction, cinematography and the lack of gratuitous if brief nudity and realistic profanity makes it feel like a Hayes code-era movie that could have been made ten years earlier.
I watched the very first one. In the 70s. I will always adore it even tough it does not really follow along with the book. I never had a favorite character as I felt it took all of them to make the movie.

Totally agree with you, I saw Poseidon at the cinema lol ! But I was brought up to the 70s Poseidon Adventure as a kid, and do prefer this original classic, Personally thought it was more scary especially when the Emergency alarms are set off .. its like OMFG! lol

I remember catching the remake on AMC years ago with no knowledge of either film and thought the remake was complete garbage. It's insane how people came together and were like "yeah this is fine, release it".

I have to agree. The '72 cinematic version of the Gallico novel was supreme, despite being filled with pathos and stereotypical characterizations. The '05 TV version was actually better than the cinematic version of the same year. And, as others have already pointed out here, the novel was far darker than any film version. The band of survivors crawling out the stern of the hull (and the child Robin died), are in tatters and covered in filth and oil, only to discover a larger band of survivors coming out of the bow with nary a nick to the nylons.
NO REMAKE CAN COMPARE TO THE BODY STELLA STEVENS WAS PACKING THEN, PERIOD !
Stella Stevens was always a voluptuous woman. She plays a woman with a little roughness around the edges really well. She paired up with Ernest Borgnine in this movie quite nicely.
I agree with both comments here. As a kid watching this movie around January 1973, I had a big crush on Stella Stevens. I love her panties, and any scenes that showed them such as Stella climbing up the ladder with Hackman leading or swimming under water. I wish they showed her climbing up the Christmas tree also. My favorite line in the whole film is: " Just panties what else do I need "! Stella Stevens does have a great body. 🥰🥰🥰😘😘😘

The remake was hollow, careless, and unbelievable. Imagine bow thrusters continue running after the ship turns over. What's been powering them, Duracell?

That's probably the greatest performance of "oh my God" in any movie ever....certainly the most memorable.

It doesn't matter how many times I play this video I cannot stop laughing out loud at the sharp and witty comments and criticism of the remake. This is one of my fave channels because the person creating these is really thinking about it and providing the listener with so much to chew over. Please keep them coming when time and life permits! From a fan in the UK who loves these American movies.

You did fail to mention the often discussed "Christ" subtext of the preacher sacrificing himself for the good of his "deciples".
I was also a kid when we went as a family to see it.
Dad had mentioned something about "Queen Mary". Again I was dragged along to something I just knew would not interest me.

In regards to the busboy getting kicked off; in situations like these people change so their survival instincts kick in and people understand that it’s better to lose one rather than two. Dylan had zero time to politely or empathetically tell him to kick the busboy off, it was a quick survival decision.
P.S. Besides your slight (and somewhat understandable) misunderstanding of the situation I really enjoyed your video. I wish they released an *Extended Cut* of the remake as it may actually be a definitive edition of the film.
The bloke at 7:52 "Ernest Borgnine" played McHale in the TV Show McHale's navy. Which was a comedy TV show based off World War II

This is on of the best classic films i have seen it had a big impact on me when i first seen this film i was about 6 years old always remember gene Hackman and Borgnine in this film and the song the morning after. The next film like this was called the last voyage another great classic for me i always remember theses to films as a kid but the titanic films a night to remember didn't have that much of an impact but still it was another classic film .The last one was Goliath awaits but wasn't really a disaster type film but as a kid i really like the concept and the story of people living under a sunken ship for all those years who are old now and have kids who never seen the real world and trying to bring them back to the surface. But since the Poseidon Adventure and The Last Voyage i haven;t seen any better ones out to date unless you call James Cameron Titanic film a classic no it wasn't but it did had the best epic visual effects of the sinking of the Titanic to date obviously.

I think the remake was terrible - - they went outside the ship too many times once it capsized. They didn't stay with the main characters, they kept again cutting to the outside, back-and-forth, back-and-forth, and spent no time and character development or the claustrophobic together experience the Irwin Allhen was able to capture . Too many 1-D characters, too many shots outside of the ship, thus it was terrible.
Trivia: the tone of the book is very, VERY different from the movie. In fact, while at the end of the movie, the main characters are the sole survivors, in the book their journey is revealed as not only useless, but counterproductive. As a whole, it's more mean-spirited than the movie.
Personally I find the remake more entertaining. The original is ok, but The Towering Inferno is THE BEST disaster movie Irwin Allen has ever made. And the 2006 remake doesn't have that waste of space that is Nonnie. I wanted to see her die throughout, but never did.
Gregory House I agree with the comparison of the original film and the book. I'm a sucker for source material and the book is one of my favorites ever, so I hope one day someone will eventually it together and make a version that could directly follow the book.

The first one is more captivating because of the capsizing of the ship, the "big thing" that everybody awaits in this kind of movies.

I agree with most of what you said especially about the suicidal gay character not only being one of the survivors but also purposefully killing another guy. The only one in the group that wants to die is one of the survivors how ridiculous is that! I mean he seriously should have got his karma killing like Mr. fantastic did on San Andreas!

I just finished up doing you every other year watch of all 3 Poseidon movies and have some things to write.
1972: Just a couple nitpicks. The whole movie they portrayed Shelley Winters like she’s some elderly woman, she was ONLY 51 when the movie was filmed. Maybe 51 was old in 1972, but in todays world, 51 is still considered pretty young. Another thing is how when I watch the movie it doesn’t feel like there is any Time Jumps, the whole post Capsizing the movie happens in real time, so if the ship is Capsized it’s just past Midnight, and when they escape it is daylight outside, even though it’s just been 2 hours at the absolute most.
2005: My personal favorite telling of the Poseidon story. It’s the first telling I ever saw, and remember being so hyped for it, I watched when it first premiered on NBC in November 2005. I like that since it is a 3 Hour Movie, that there is a ton of time to really get to know all the Characters, their backgrounds, their motivations, etc. Also all the scenes in the movie that happen in regards to the rescue, you see the shipping company trying to locate the ship after it disappears from radar. I feel like for most people, they either have never seen this version, or if they have it’s their least favorite. But like I say if you really think about it, there is a ton of positives about the 2005 movie.
2006: This is my personal least favorite telling of the Poseidon. The reason that is my opinion, is that the movie gives absolutely zero reason to care about the characters. In the 1972 version, the wave happens 30 minutes into the movie, in 2005 the bomb goes off 1 Hour in, but the 2006 version, the ship capsizes only 15 minutes into the film. There was a point in watching it today that I thought to myself, if they had just spent more time letting us get invested in the characters, I’d enjoy it so much better, because some of the escape scenes are actually pretty good, like when the group essentially drowns themselves to move onto the next room, that was pretty cool.

My personal opinion it was not a crappy film to me. I seen it when I was 4yrs old and I have watched it every time it’s on and that was bad ass special effects for 1972 and 2006 version was also a great film. I just have to consider the difference in time. There was not much of a budget and because it was over and behind the new president of the prod company was going to scrap the work and Irwin has his own money in it and would of went from Rich to poor and the cast and Irwin convinced him to continue. Seen this is a interview w/ Ernest B. It was a great decision to move forward cause it’s a great film and part of Hollywood history. I would of loved being cast in these.

I remember seeing the original on some cable tv channel as a kid and falling in love with it. When the remake was announced, I was not excited in the slightest. Eventually saw it from a torrent or cable and it was exactly as I expected. The capsizing scene was pretty cool, but the rest of the movie was meh at best.

Yeah I like both but characters from the old were better and even though the effects aren't as good they still hold up pretty well so Old wins, but here's something I find funny, I saw the remake first, then the original and never knew there was a 2005 version until watching this,... That-that's pretty bad.
I personally don’t care that the remake was lacking character development. Maybe the reason I love the remake is because I grew up watching that movie. I haven’t seen the original (because I literally just found out the 2006 movie was a remake lol) but I now plan on watching it soon. It doesn’t look bad. I love older movies. The reason I let the character development slide is because I always felt they were on a time limit to certain death and didn’t have much time to go into depth and I was okay with that. Thinking about how I would have handled the situation was to just keep moving and once a conflict happens, try to overcome it as quickly as possible then keep moving. Obviously once someone dies you need some time but you can’t just sit around and sulk if you want to live. Plus I get overly attached to characters even if they have no character. I usually don’t even want the mean people to die cuz at the end of the day they are human. My reasonings are stupid I guess but 🤷♂️
Nevertheless, u need to be given reasons to care and root for the characters to survive other than "they're human". They won't be interesting and stand out from each other if they "just exists".

1972: True hero who is not only a minister, but risks his life to save the other crew members. The film takes it's time and it has us focusing on the people.
2006: A spoiled brat gambler who cares about no one but himself and flirts inappropriate ways with women, plus encourages a man who is a homosexual to kill a man that is trying to help them, you don't feel sorry for anyone, the director makes us brag about the cool effects rather than focusing on the people, and it's rushed too fast!
I only like The Poseidon Adventure (2005) b/c it was the 1st one I saw, and I agree the 2006 one sucks. 1972 Rules!
I haven't seen the 1972 verison, but I just saw the 2006 version and really like it! I right now watch the 2005 verison and find it so awkward.

I saw the original Poseidon Adventure when I was 7 at the movies. The new version I found horrible and kept swapping the remake cast for the original. The shouting by Borgnine shows the frustration of the characters and he played an ex cop and they are used to being in charge.
If you saw Earthquake in the theatre your seats shook when there was an earthquake.
Airplane was a SPOOF of the disaster movies.
The older films or 'Original' films are often better than any modern remake. Unfortunately with modern films around 80% of the action is CGI enhanced. Actors perform in front of a blue or green screen or a flung around on wires. They didn't have that technology in the 50's, 60's or even the early 70's. Just look at the tv series of Star Trek and you'll see what I mean. The fact that good accurate and detailed models were used along with great acting from movie stars was all they had to sell you the illusion, and for the most part, it worked a treat. The end result, more often than not, was a great movie with likable or lovable characters and pretty good action scenes. These days you get characters; who all look like Mr or Ms Universe, who parade around in spandex or shirtless, with pathetic dialogue to a story that is pointless and vague. You don't get the same reaction from these modern characters as you would in cinema's bygone era. All in all, remakes are not worth watching except for the special effects...and even then, there are too many CGI effects and not enough 'movie'.

I went to see the remake is Emma Rossum. I was in high school, and she is, was a big cruch. I also figured it would be an interesting to see it with todays special effects. and its just an ok movie. will stand the test of time.
I was a Hotel Asst. Mgr. at a Hilton Hotel where Red Buttons was staying. He got mad that the Hotel had a new Testement Bible in his room. He was also mad that the hotel didn't provide him with freebies, like licquor and food. He complained constantly about nothing. Complete pinhead with a bloated ego.

As others have said, the cast of the original Poseidon Adventure can hardly be described as B-list actors. Maybe it depends on how you define A-list and B-list. The 2006 remake has numerous story issues and other problems. The scene you analyzed in the elevator shaft is the focus of the movie's failure. Heroes are supposed to be role models that inspire us to try harder and be the best we can. That is not what Josh Lucas portrays in the film; both the story and the director are responsible for this blunder.
Lucas' character was more like the character in the book. Not a sympathetic character at all. None of the characters in the book were. It was nowhere near as good as the original movie. At least the original movie made you cared what happened and when someone died you felt bad.
@@franknberry6397 That is a great way to evaluate a character in a movie, recognizing how much you care about them. The writer gets the credit first, and then the actor and the director follow in second place when it all comes together. The actor for delivering the performance, and the director sometimes just for not interfering.
Never knew the did a remake. I saw the org. at the drive inn when it came out I was 6 or 7 years old.
In my opinion, the 2005 remake isn’t that bad. In fact, I thought it was pretty alright. Sure, it’s silly with adding terrorists, bombs and guns, but it was interesting to watch.
Original rules. I would imagine Russell & Dreyfuss only did the remake for the money ! What other reason would there be ? !
The only scene in the entire remake that I truly felt was scary (rather terrifying, actually), was when they were all trapped in a tiny vent (? I can't exactly remember), Elaina had to pass her necklace to the person in the front so they could unscrew the 'lid' and they could all escape. I believe the water was rising quickly - it's hard to remember (and I definitely won't be watching it again). For me, that scene really worked. But the rest of it was just awful. In fact, until watching this video, I'd forgotten about half the characters. The only character I really like in the remake was Elaina. She was really likeable, and you couldn't help root for her. When are they ever going to learn, that we want to CARE about the characters? We want to cry when they die, and rejoice when they live! Such a dreadful, dreadful remake.
According to this one podcast I heard, there is more of a love story between Christian and Kurt Russell's character, then there is with Christian and Jennifer.
I will always like the original.

You know, I always found the 2005 tv remake terrible myself, oddly since I've watched that first, always disliked that one for horrible effects, even fake CGI ship and water. And seriously? No wave?
Also I saw the newest remake before the original. And let me say, I was such a sucker on the CGI effects of the ship looking so real. But after all the stuff you pointed out in it, I never actually thought of it that way. And come to think of it, how did that rogue wave appear in the remake? Were there ever ballast tanks on cruise ships today? And I just wish the characters in the remake were a lot more like the original characters.
Anyway I dare ask, is it wrong to somehow like both the original and the newest remake equally? Is it?!
There is no problem with preference or liking the remake over the original, original over the remake, or liking them equally. No one's gonna stop you from liking any of them, whether it's awesome or shit the movie.
It's only wrong when if you're stating facts. I find it annoying if people are saying that the remake is better over the original if they're stating it factually. If it's opinion, then understandable and I don't find it annoying.
So if you like em, no prob. I do like all three of them, but I enjoyed the 1972 original the most.
But you have to admit, the 2005 movie did one thing better, and that's the introduction of the whole scenery and the characters...something the 2006 movie completely misses. I can watch the 2005 movie again and again, simply because there is something to watch (and the not so good CGI effects don't bother me, it's a TV movie from 2005 after all). The 2006 movie is just way too short.
I saw original movie in 72, watched the TV movie, and also the 2006 remake. The TV version is horrible. Steve Guttenberg? I felt like I was watching Police Academy 10. I like the 2006 version, but not after the first viewing. I went back to the theater couple days later, couldn't get the opening scene out of my head how it starts under water and hear the rumbling of the ship and the front slicing through the water with opening music. Camera pans around the ship as Dylan is running. I love that whole scene. I do have a lot of complaints about the 2006 version though. It didn't feel like New Years. No tree. Elena's lame storyline. The lame gay character. The drunk guy was kind of lame. Things that saved the movie, the capsize, Fergie dying, the waiter kicked in the elevator shaft, the explosions, Dylan was cool, Kurt Russel was cool. I give 2005 version 0 stars, 2006 version 5 star, and the original 10 stars.
I haven't seen the 1972 verison, but I just saw the 2006 version and really like it! I right now watch the 2005 verison and find it so awkward.

The original is the best no question. It’s gritty, but not over the top gritty to the point of ridiculousness like the remake. And the characters are great as well as the score and theme song.

The original was the better movie by a wide margin. Sure some of the special effects in the new movie were really good. Trouble is, that was all that was good in the new movie. Besides I always had a crush on Pamela Sue Martin ( Susan ) from the original.
I did too. I always thought she was very nice looking.

The original is absolutely the best version. But I have to wonder if any ship, even with adequate ballast in its hull, would be able to withstand a tidal wave of the size depicted in the movie. I have my doubts about that. Anyone care to comment?
Check what I wrote; it was a rogue wave caused by an undersea earthquake, not a tidal wave. I'm just used to thinking of waves of that enormity as tidal waves.

To answer your billing question, Haphazadstuff, it appears Josh Lucas and Kurt Russell did a split of star billing. All the movie posters with cast listings put Kurt Russell ahead of Josh Lucas, while in the film, Lucas is top billed over Russell. I believe they did the same type of thing with John Wayne and James Stewart in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance." Wayne was given top billing on the posters, and Stewart was top billed in the film itself. Apparently, they didn't elect to try the staggered billing approach used for Paul Newman and Steve McQueen in "The Towering Inferno." While I agree Russell is the bigger name, I'll admit after watching the film, Lucas' character was the leader of the group. Russell's character is right up there, but he follows the Lucas character's lead for the majority of the film. Lucas gets the swan dive into the flaming pool that stretches credibility to the breaking point when they're briefly fractured as a group, and gets the hero moment to save the kid from drowning. Russell only gets the major hero moment of sacrificing himself to save the others.
Russell also gets the hero moment of saving the kid from the inverted piano right after the capsize, and he also helps Lucas rescue the people pinned under the lighting rig in the nightclub. Plus there's also his plan to get to the thruster room using the trimming ballast tanks, even though it does result in that stupid "tremendous pressure" line. His status as a de facto hero is also made clear by the numerous references to his prior career as a chief with the FDNY (he's even implied to have been a first responder during 9/11).
I like them both. The first one always comes first though.
The one thing I don’t get in 1972 one Is the some of the dinning chairs stay on the floor when it’s upside down. I can understand the tables being attached. Think they made a mistake with the chairs in filming. Lol.
@@DFDalton1962 I know. But still think it’s a mistake. The chairs are the dining table chairs pushed out from the tables when people stood up from tables. They wouldn’t be fastened. The tables are fastened. Not the chairs.
