Some may not realize that before the documentary "The Poseidon Adventure" was filmed, Paul Gallico researched the event and recorded it in book form. I believe Mr. Gallico's version of the catastrophe is more detailed than the film version. And it has some striking differences from the film, the greatest one being (spoiler alert)...
that the people who elected to remain in the ballroom survived and were rescued without enduring all the hardships of the group who chose to climb to the ship's hull. This ironic twist hit me hard when I read it.

I don't think Hackman, as he was in 1972/1973, would be considered "B-tier." Hackman was already a celebrated actor, riding high after winning an Oscar for Best Actor for his legendary performance as Popeye Doyle in "The French Connection." On a personal note, I believe both Hackman and Borgnine (himself a prior Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe winner) were robbed of Academy Award and/or Golden Globe nominations for "The Poseidon Adventure." Borgnine, Red Buttons, and two-time Oscar winner Shelley Winters were certainly B-tier at this point in their careers, and the rest of the cast--pre-"Airplane" Leslie Nielsen included--likely occupied lower tiers.

Joking aside there is at least one solid lesson to be gleaned from such a tale: The captain is the master of his ship. He is responsible for the lives of everyone aboard and of the safety of the ship itself. If he says to take on ballast, you take on ballast. If he says it's too heavy, you ditch weight, no questions from the company should be needed. Ship stability is no laughing matter and it doesn't take much of a mistake to lead to tragedy.

Excellent content as always. Might I recommend one? I know you may not be able to get around it until next year, but an aviation incident came to my mind while I was watching this. Could you do a video on Flight 209 that took place on July 2, 1980? The brave actions of pilot Ted Striker (who overcame both his fear of flying and a drinking problem) should be shared for generations to come.

Outside of Honolulu Hawaii, the small charter boat SS Minnow, with seven souls on board, went missing somewhere in the Pacific Ocean after encountering a typhoon. To this day, nobody knows what happened to the crew and passengers as this tragedy was quietly swept under the rug.
