The boot is the most sacred piece of equipment for a footballer. It can take years to find the perfect model. Or in some professional players’ cases, it can take thousands of pounds in modifications.
This is the story of footballers and their weird football boots.

Bootle was born for the job.
Please tell me his workshop is in Bootle, Liverpool (or used to be a Boots)
Nominative determinism
Sadly that was a scripting error, he's actually called Tootle
Tootle from bootle
Apologies for our error, Aiden McGeady was not a Scottish international and played for the Republic of Ireland. Please feel free to leave comments telling Joe how wrong he was for saying it.
Seb also made a mistake: Jon Tootle is the expert boot-modifier, not Jon Bootle. Apologies to Jon at TootsBoots.
Aiden McGeady was not a Scottish international and played for the Republic of Ireland!
It's also "soleplate" not "soul plate" as written at 5:13. lol
Never mind that - he played for Sunderland in 4 times as many games as Everton yet no mention! PHUH!
Yeah well he should have been 😂
Will you make sure that he reads them and feels bad about it?
4:02 While he was born in Scotland, Aiden McGeady only ever played for the Republic of Ireland national team, even at youth level
Neves haunted by the Gerrard slip😂
The John Terry part sounds like something a famous person would say to make themselves seem grander tbh, if he really wore a hundred pairs of boots a season that’s messed up lol.
Like that pratt David Beckham who - because he had a sponsorship deal giving him a lifetime’s supply - apparently only ever wore a pair of his Calvin Klein pants/boxer trunks once
Genuine question I am curious for Tifo to answer, why does French club football seem to have historically underperformed so much in the Champions League? France is a large and wealthy country, with a huge footballing tradition and a highly decorated national team. Yet, French clubs only won the UCL once in history, much less than the other big 4 leages, but also far below Portugal and the Netherlands.
They are great in developing talents but had a problem in keeping them, I guess. For 98 final WC, they only had 2 players playing in French club starting for them, Barthez and Guivarch
I can answer that, The reason for this is that the money came in quite recently compared to other clubs who had developed facilities already. And french teams became a part of the top 5 very recently. The main team competing for the champions league this season is PSG, who is known for bad spending and chemistry. Knowing this we can say that they aern't as prepared and also the tactics that they can handle are limited to a certain league or level. This is the same reason why FC Barcelona won the league but Real madrid finished ahead of them in the champions league
And to make it worse most good french players are usually leaving as there is less competition and future in the club. eg Mbappe
French clubs, aren't French teams. I'll leave it at that.
French clubs can't go in debt, unlike everybody else. Taxes are also somewhat higher which makes spending more difficult.
Even back then, the greatest players never stayed in France.
Aidan McGeady played for Ireland
Interesting. As someone who usually watch boot reviews, it was assumed most if not all of players customization came from manufacturers themselves like Nike Montebelluna factory. Didn't realised there is actually a huge market for third party boot customization service that players used.
Lies again? Face Book
Meanwhile me who played football wearing a sneakers, and sometimes barefoot.
ur not special bro get a job
Barefoot on a rainy day 😩🤤
@@Kenjaku508ikr
Ahh the feeling of playing football barefoot and then injuring your foot😂
You're not paid to play football
I would watch an entire series of videos about specific boot mods
Messi used to have both front and rear studs made conical and shortened until Adidas provided him his own custom stud pattern which he still wears to this day. And let’s not forget his fascination with the burrito style tongue 😂
Messi seems to also wear Kangaroo leather boots customized with the colors of the retail version throughout his career. At least the gold boots he wore in the 2022 World Cup looked like K leather, but it could be a very high synthetic that mimics leather.
Error at 4:01, McGeady isn’t a Scotland international
Yeah i was so confused when they said that 😂😂😂
Fascinating insight on a rarely discussed topic.
Aslo, the Szoboslai thing with boots that are too small was previously done in the 90's with great success by Giuseppe Signori. He claimed it gave him greater control, and nobody can argue with his goalscoring record
Mcgeedy didn’t play for Scotland, he played for ROI, suprising to see tifo make error tho
Sounds like a dig because McGeady ethnically is Scottish isn’t he and only chose Ireland because we were a better team
@@TimTomJimJom Scottish aint an ethnicity
@@gigglemaniarunninwild2207 you know what mean man, let’s not get into semantics. His heritage is Scottish
@@TimTomJimJom his heritage is Irish, his family are irish immigrants to Scotland that’s why he chose to play for ireland
3 pairs of boots a game and then never again? I bet Terry never wore the ones he had on to lift the Champions League trophy either! How wasteful.
Mcgeady played for Ireland 🇮🇪
Szoboslai has refuted the story of him having to wear smaller boots
John Terry treat his boots like his woman, "..they would quickly loose their touch and feel."
Ahahaha
also, boots are now being manufactured specifically for the women's game, to better prevent acl injuries
I found this video to be so incredibly pleasant and informative. What a fun departure from the norm. Kudos!
If only Reuben Neves was there to give Slippy G some tips.
Rudolf Dassler who created Puma was the brother of Adi Dassler who created Adidas. Rudolf originally worked with Adi at Adidas but they fell out, and so he done one and started his own company on the other side of the town
This is the kind of video we need, really interesting stuff to know.
Really interesting subject. Thank you for this 🙂
At the age of about 19, Steve McManaman signed a lifetime deal with Umbro for £100,000 a year, thinking it was a great deal at the time.
Some years later, he took Umbro to Court arguing they took advantage of his age when offering him a lifetime deal, and requested the contract be terminated as much better short term deals from other boot manufacturers were by then being offered.
The Judge ruled he could terminate the Umbro contract and forego the £100,000 a year but that he couldn’t wear any other boot manufacturer’s branded boots in return.
So for the remainder of his career he wore blacked out Adidas World Cups and Copa Mundials. Whether he was actually sponsored by Adidas I don’t know.
McGeady played for Ireland
I remember loving Mercurials when I was just a teen but also noticed to have wide foot. Tried several pairs and never felt a natural fit but somehow managed to shoot stronger than usual. Would like to know more about Szoboszlai history. Now I wear Puma, I prioritize confort + first touch over light weight.
We need the podcast back!
It’s weird how specific modifications can get, like how do you even work out that that’s what you need
There's a science to it, talk to a boot guy and you'll realize how much there is to it. Despite the complications though, the perennial question is "how much of a difference does this actually make?" I think most footballers invest in customization just for the *chance* that it might improve things, not because they're really convinced this new soleplate or upper will definitely advance their game
Perhaps from their experience of wearing many different boots.
Eg: I like the upper Kangaroo Leather in my Puma football boot for its touch and protection. But the Studs are a bit too long for AG/FG ground where I mostly play.
I prefer my older Adidas Speedflow stud pattern over the one in my Puma boot.
When I used to play football with proper pitch football boots I always got terrible blisters at the achilles tendon. That's why I always played with hard court boots if possible as they have a lot softer and better padded backside.
Ever heard of taping?
@@chrisgoat6435 Yes, the tape is not thick enough to provide enough cushion for me to not hurt unless I make it like 1cm thick, by which point I can't wear the boot anymore :D. My foot bones have a very pronounced part at the back that even rubs padded cushions away over time in normal shoes.
@@MrReeseonly happened to me during the break in period. After that no blisters whatsoever.
@@MrReese Wrong tape then 😅
Really enjoy your content!
gotta appreciate every tiny bit!
Check out Bissouma's boots. So dope
Ahhhh, our man Bootle! A rare breed, indeed.
Boots were unusually modify with weird colours and My foot is larger than usual size.
I use Puma however my foot size weren't match then I refuse move to Adidas and Nike. I was infuriated over that.
Terry was probably very poor as a child and he was doing it either to give back or feel in control. I wonder if this is what caused the issue in the CL final or came from it. I dunno for some reason this makes me like Terry much better.
adidas and puma are crying rn
I wonder if this will happen in climbing at some point since special shoes are also very important in that sport. For now, the top climbers still just use standard shoes as far as I am aware and brand deals need to be with a brand that makes shoes that suite the climber, so usually not just whoever pays the most. Also there is not a duoperly like there is in football.
It’s bound to happen with climbing now being an Olympic sport
Just
I usually just buy a boot I'm comfortable with and stick with it.
Kroos' signature boots are iconic
Other words besides "iconic" exist. Try using them occasionally.

Neves knew what he was doing💀💀💀
Came back to watch a real Tifo video.
Nice new info👍
1:42 What exactly are they cutting when they're heal trimming (the inside of the heal or the top)?
2:08 Boot warming sounds great in theory, but that can't last very long, can it?
When it wears off, you've already been running around enough to produce your own warmth I guess
His voice is so soothing
the Terry example is just too wasteful
3 pairs for one match!!!
that cost could feed a family
Is the ground at Stamford bridge really that bad ?
Footballers spend tons of money on bs but if its one category where id allow it it would be here (even if some where still ridiculous)
Más icónicos que los botines puma negros con el logo blanco de Maradona no hay
makes a bit of a mockery of players who endorse specific boots. Yes I wear these, but I then do $20k+ of mods to make them work for me, but you'll do just fine in the off the shelf ones.
I'd love to sit down and have a convo with Mr Bootle .
John BOOTle - you couldnt make it up 😅
Frank Lampard wore Adidas Adipure with one foot half a size different to the other
"Soul plate" 👼👼👼
interesting how this vid comes out a week after the piece in The Athletic.

how much of these changes are a placebo effect?
Who else remembers the Puma King advert featuring Pele in the cinema in the late 1980’s/early 1990’s, which ended with the caption:
World Cup Wins
Brazil 3-1 England
Kind of like baseball players with their bat and gloves. Cepeda thought there was only one hit in each bat.
Poor Sbozlai...them feet have suffered a lot
Still waiting for your piece on referee selection, allocation and training.
oh
Mcgeady the scotland international? A rare lapse for tifo
very interesting video!
The only player to wear pink boots and never have his sexuality called into question: Diego Costa
insert - Lukaku’s timberlands.
Gary Lineker wore Quaser boots towards the end of his career 🤮 Prior to that during the 1986 World Cup Finals in Mexico, he had to have his ‘lucky’ pair of Adidas World Cups repaired after each game as they were so knackered.
No way that McGeady reference was a mistake 😂 You cheeky buggers
3:20 I don’t think anyone has ever slipped at Anfield before?
Nice one
I remember Philip coutinho had a hole at the heel of his boots
Vote for your best looking boots ever. Mine are the first version Adidas AdiPure in black with white stripes.
You forgot Erik Lamela. He wears a different boot on each foot
Yeah Joe
As an Irishman I'm not impressed with Aiden McGeady being referred to as former Scotland international. We've stolen a few but we've had them stolen to

Did John Terry wear a fourth pair for extra time and penalty shootouts.

Of course John Terry would considered himself entitled enough to wear 3 different pairs a game.

3:32 this is not true, hir actual foot size is simply small, hir size is 41 euros. He never used a smaller size boot and his father was angry that many people thought he had told him so.
Paul Scholes bought a pair from jjb sports 😂
Adidas still makes adipure but only for Kroos

@@aimanazrie8944 They aren't "complaining", they are trying to maximise performance. The more comfortable to you in your boots, the better you play and it probably helps to lessen injury.
If you think they are doing it just to be prima-donnas you need to give your heads a wobble.
Jeez, did John Terry seriously wear 3 pairs per game and then never again? That feels incredibly wasteful. I really hope those boots went to other people and didn't get thrown away
