  • Gladys Knight discusses the value of the Freedmen’s Bureau when looking for answers within your own family history. Uncover genealogy treasures with the Freedmen’s Bureau records today.
    Transcript:
Well, I was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in Grady Hospital, as most of the African American kids were down there. I’m a Grady baby. That was some 71 years ago. My mom and my dad were from College Park in East Point, Georgia. I have two brothers and one sister. Our journey kind of made us closer, and we can’t tell our full story until we fully know who we are and where we come from. We’re the only culture in this country that doesn’t have their own names. Every other culture can go back and find their heritage along the way. We carry slave names, you know. And we’re from Africa, and now it has been brought to the fore where we can go and find our families and our genealogy which the Church so wonderfully been doing for so many, many years.
I believe the Freedmen’s Bureau has done something so extraordinarily amazing with getting these records together and making them available to those of us who didn’t get the information that we were looking for or for the world to know. You cannot know what an uplifting thing that is to find out who you really are and that you don’t just exist. Now, that’s not to say that you can’t be a good person if you don’t know that history, but it sure does help you to understand certain things about your life and where you come from and who you are. Truly. We’re supposed to love each other and sincerely do that, you know, not with any other thoughts in the back of our heads, you know, no racism, no disputes, no none of that kind of stuff. Just loving together and living together.
Let’s mesh our harmonies, let’s mesh our music, let’s mesh-we had to come through some bad, bad, bad times. How did we get through? We sung in the fields. You know, we looked up. Where did that come from? That was the Spirit that He gave us, that He blessed us with. We are all the way down the line here with this awesome information that can make a difference for all of us and get us ready, because He’s coming back, you know, and He wants us all together. You know, don’t think He ain’t coming back and he’s trying to give us all the tools that we need to be ready when He comes. And that means all of his children. I’m one of them. Come on y’all, let’s get this thing together, you know?

Some of her statements are not true, a great deal of us are NOT from Africa and we do not carry slave names...A great deal of us didn't even endure slavery the old lie that we were all slaves is simply not true...Yes slavery existed for some however it included the Irish, American Indian and Englishman the truth is that people who call themselves African American will find that they are indigenous to the continent of America and was not brought over on a mythical slave ship even if you have one line on your family tree that was from Africa that is NOT your entire family...

I hope this video has not limited your view and research for others of African-American descent. All my research leads me back to a plantation but i am not limited in my view/scope in understanding that there were some free African-Americans. I use African-Americans to signify those that did come from Africa.

Hahta I agree with all of what you said ~ that part I’m aware of ...but the land that we stand on had slavery roots set up on this soil ...most of us carry massa last name because they inslaved most of our ancestors right on our home land so called America.....Mississippi,Alabama,Virginia,Louisiana,Arkansa,Tennessee,Kentucky,Massachusetts,Iowa you babe it had slavery of so called blacks on this land from those that were already here ....my mom mom and her dad family were born in the south...my dad family were from east Africa...but knowing my mother side of the family and this last name I carry was from a slave owner ...sad to say if most of us dig in those archives they will find out some heavy spit
