  • Have you noticed those blue, purple, or red icons in your family tree and wondered what they all mean? Those icons represent three different types of hints that FamilySearch can provide to help you in your genealogy research:
Record Hints: There are over 1.3 billion free indexed records in FamilySearch. You’ll see a record hint icon when FamilySearch has found records with information about people in your family tree.
Research Suggestions: These hints show you areas on your tree that might be a good place to do additional research. (Ancestors with no sources attached, missing birth or death years, possible missing child, etc.)
Data Quality: If any of the data in your tree has incorrect or contradictory dates, these icons will alert you so the problem can be fixed. (Ancestors who were born before parents, birth before marriage year, married before 12, etc.)

If someone is not in your tree it doesn't mean they aren't in the whole family tree yet. Before you add them as a new person, please search for them. Family Tree doesn't always find duplicates when you go to add a new person. This will help prevent duplicates.

I often prefer to create the person from the hint, then merge in any duplicate person(s). It's easier to search for duplicates to a person who is already created because it fills in the search form automatically. If there was no duplicate, you've saved yourself some typing of redundant information in both a search form and a new person record.

I think some people think if they say attach a source that all information from it will automatically go onto the tree. I used to think that and was annoyed when I noticed it had not happened.

Some people aren't really interested in a person's spouses and families if they're already somewhat peripheral to their main line. They recognize that the marriage record is applicable, but leave it to someone else to extend the tree to new people in that direction.

Yes my problem is I goo too wide and far in all directions sometimes. It is good to concentrate on close family ancestors.
