Prof. Chomsky's writings including "Manufacturing Consent" have become all too true. He's been a doomsayer that has offered us the possibility of change for a better future but in no way, shape or form is he delusional. America is in a state of collapse.

If my grandpas were still alive, they would only be 3 to 4 years older than Chomsky is right now. This man has seen the Great Depression, Europe's descent into fascism, WWII, the Civil Rights Movement, all significant Women's Rights movements since the suffrage, Vietnam, Corea, the Cold War, the rise and decline of neoliberalism, the fall of the Soviet Union, 9/11 and the iraque war. And somehow, he still figured out to remain on the right side of history. If there ever was such a thing like a living legend, he'd be probably the closest to it.

@ I wouldn't call the Democratic corporatists to be classic neoliberals in the economic sense. At least not anymore since the bailouts 2008. I would actually state that to most of the populace, it has proven to fail on dealing with reality. Also please consider that US politics do not equal the rest of the world, the US is far right-wing to the rest of the world. I am German for instance, and our conservatives actually achieved to write a debt ceiling into the constitution back in the 2000s with the shameful help of social democrats. Both parties are back in power and started to ignore their own amendment amidst the Coronavirus crisis, something the 2008 crisis could not achieve.

I told him that I admired his work with linguistics and generative grammar. He was about to give a lecture at Harvard University and he asked me if I was a Harvard student (I'm not). IF you cannot understand his voice in this interview (bad audio), then use the subtitles on CZcams. Here is how:
When you click on the link above, it takes you to the video. Before the video starts, click on the tiny "GEAR" icon for the video SETTINGS. This is shown on the bottom right margin of the video image. Look for the tiny wheel like GEAR icon. Click on that.
Then, look at that sub menu and find SUBTITLES, click on that and choose ENGLISH (if that is what you want).
When I do this, the subtitles show large (you can adjust size too) on my screen on the video.
You can do this for MOST videos on CZcams. Perhaps not all (I am not sure).
I hope that helps you. :)
Also, you can adjust the playback speed if you want. Look under that same GEAR (SETTINGS) icon menu, for PLAYBACK SPEED. I sometimes choose .75 speed to slow fast talkers down if I am taking notes.

How is it dumb? Chomsky says, in this interview, that Trump is more dangerous than Biden, and that Biden can be pressured into doing what we want. That's pretty backwards. Trump hasn't started any wars (and he tried to end one, but the Democrats blocked him). He stopped the health insurance mandate. He even backed off a bit on his anti-mask position. Biden wants to start more wars, bring back ObamaCare in full, and pass laws that force everyone to wear a mask and do whatever he thinks people should do. Biden is obviously the more dangerous candidate. Trump isn't perfect, not by a long shot, and I'm certainly not voting for Trump, but Chomsky isn't seeing things clearly if he thinks Biden is the better option.

When determining the fate of a system by assessing the amount of entropy occurring within it, and you consider the amount of entropy occurring with the planet, and with the human condition, for example the confluence of events described, in addition to a well-established system reverting to political and economic regression, including contributing to the Anthropocene, 6th mass biodiversity extinction, and climate catastrophe, and the solution is to remove a malignancy that achieved the highest office in the land, and to use nonviolence to shift another verifiable malignancy a little bit to the left, and hope that’s enough to jumpstart an entire sequence of events, which if they each succeed, might barely forestall the worst consequences of inertias already set in motion, it’s time to rethink the human condition at the most causal level of reductionism possible, objectify whatever toxic biological determinism exists, and move in the distinctly opposite direction as fast as possible.

Because one of them is getting elected. It can be Trump which 100% means goodbye to democracy and any good of averting catastrophic climate chaos, or it's Biden, who is at least accepts democracy is a good thing and that climate catastrophe is something to be avoided.
When FDR got into power, he didn't immediately enact the New Deal. It was way to politically hard. He told the socialists and und unions "Get in the streets and make me do it."

"Do you try again to have this sort of political revolution from within the Democratic Party to kick out the neoliberals? Do you start an entirely new third party? [Do you fight for ranked-choice voting and/or proportional representation in congress?] There's a new effort underway, with the People's Party, to start something new, a working-class focus, from scratch.

Yes failed state. If you think the responsibility of the state is to help and protect the largest number of human beings as possible there is no doubt we are a failed state. If you think the job of the state is to produce capital for a small minority of people then the state is doing exactly as it should.

      bigddaz,
Chomsky doesn't get invited on corporate TV for same reason Chris Hedges doesn't.
      It's called: BDS ...
Both men support it to the roots of their souls.
It stands for something like Boycott Israeli products and divest of ownership in all Israeli business ...
      And, Sanction Israel.
Put simply, until they do right by the Palestinians.
It's the bond, to me, between mainstream media's boycott of Chomsky and Hedges.

I feel so depressed and hopeless. Every decision made by the elites has been making me more and more cynical about humanity’s outlook. I know that fatalism is problematic, but how is someone my age supposed to avoid it?

But there are ways to alleviate our suffering and push the world in the right direction. Get out there and protest, engage in real activism, volunteer, look into mutual aid programs. Even just pursuing a meaningful and altruistic career can help. Love the people around you, help them in their struggles and point them in the right direction.

Seeing such a revered and admirable mind be slowly taken down by an aging and rapidly degrading body is both heartbreaking and in a unique way even more admirable. Even at 91 he has the need to come out to voice his opinions for a better world. I cannot possibly wish even more longevity on a man like this, I can only wish good health for as long as he's still with us.
