  • This week we have a different type of video... Unfortunately, the BRZ started having engine issues while we were driving through the canyons. This is going to be a small series where we work on fixing the car and possibly building the engine to support more power for any future mods!

    Classic Subaru rod knock. It'll make the knocking noise under load and may be quiet at idle or very light load. If you were doing some canyon carving and don't have a baffled oil pan, you likely went through moderate to longish turn, got the oil pinned to one side of the pan and starved the engine of oil. Very common issues with these and WRX's; one of the many Subie achilles heels. RIght hand turns specifically are an issue with the BRZ, oil pressure drops significantly on sweeping right handers.

      We never knew this was a major problem for Subies especially the newer fa motors but we’ll definitely look into getting some baffled pans ASAP to hopefully prevent what you said from happening at all in the future. Also, we really hope this isn’t rod knock like you were saying but it definitely might be lol

    Sorry to hear that man. Despite the stereotype, I had to go with a VQ❤. Too reliable.

    I also agree on the s2k statement

      After some short consideration, I retract what I said and can also get behind this statement - (definitely Andrew) :)

    Were you pushing your car hard on the canyon? One reason I can think of is that oil temp got too high and thinned out and caused this. Also What oil are you running and do you have any catch cans or oil cooler?

    • @carantix
      @carantix  Před 8 měsíci

      Thank you for your feedback! I was pushing the car moderately hard throughout the canyon but what we think ultimately caused the spun bearing was an oil leak on the block somewhere which we noticed only when we got home. I currently don’t run a catch can or an oil cooler and I also run 0w-20 but I definitely think thicker oil such as 5w-20 and an oil pressure gauge would help majorly from preventing this again in the future.

      Ah man. I feel your pain. Spun a bearing on a 2015 FRS over the summer doing some spirited street driving. I ended up having Toyota fix it. Cost me 11k but has a 1-yr warranty. Independent shops offered almost no warranty and weren’t much cheaper. Good luck to you.

      Glad to hear your car is running again but guess going to a shop really isn't part of the options then lol. Thank you!
