You'd think a car guy this serious would understand how the O2 system works which would have prevented installing the spacers in the wrong position. The P0420 code is catalyst efficiency below threshold, which is determined by the downstream sensor reporting too little oxygen/too much fuel bypassing the catalyst. This was potentially the biggest issue in that it primarily uses the upstream sensor (which is a wideband) to determine if the car is running too rich or lean. Spacing it out was sending the ECU an abnormally lean condition which means the engine was running way fat to compensate. The exhaust headers also had a leak, evidenced by the excessive carbon blowing around the flange, you can see the huge black area under the engine next to the exhaust ports on the head. The belt could have walked over from high rpm and an inadequate tensioner or poor alignment of components. It likely did not get installed this way at the factory.
Any explanation for excessive oil pan sealant?
@@lengerer new guy on the job? I dunno.
In before there was a massive recall for the RTV...
You'd think people who had an interest or passion in something wouldn't know everything the minute they popped out of the womb...but I guess you were built different.
@@lengerer Best bet engineers thought that the amount of RTV what good and miscalculated how much to actually put on. Maybe they though that since the RTV is the gasket might as well add more than less. in this case too much.
I'm a car guy and i don't fully understand (yet) how an O2 sensor works, you learn everyday anyway
Not sure which I'm more mad about, the sealant or the belt. I'm leaning towards the belt. Crazy stuff
I'm leaning towards the sealant. That is something that you wouldn't know until after a few blown up engines on other cars. Once it is known you still have to remove the oil pan, inspect the oil pickup tube and reseal. The belt is something you can see and easily fix. I feel bad for all of the people who had their engines blow up due to oil starvation.
@@jonathanb1987 it’s been one, known person, so far.
@@brianb7844 nooooo buddy I've seen atleast 10 different people across forums and IG...only one person threw a fit and they blamed it on drifting lmao
@@triplemag124 Would love to see all the blown engines that randoms are claiming. Between the two largest forums and reddit, I've seen two situations of a blown engine with only one them being 100% tied to the oil starvation. There is definitely a problem present and I would hope Subaru/Toyota address it, but the reality is that the drain is designed in a manner that it will likely be partially blocked, not completely.
They don’t make ‘em like the used to 🤑
im so glad you did this man. all gen 2 owners should have subaru fix this and subaru should do it for free
I’m sure a recall is coming
I'm assuming we need more failures fixed under warranty, not people fixing it themselves.
Removes factory excess sealant, reinstalls with even more sealant 😂
Glad I wasn't the only one thinking that.
😂
Right! I was like "oh no what is you doin?"
you should see the valve cover gasket video he did awhile back, practically used a whole tube lol
Putting the "skid plate/belly pan" on after verifying no leaks would have been a good idea...
You put at least, double, maybe triple the amount of sealant on that was needed 😂
That's exactly what i was thinking too, sucks to see him remove it just to make the same issue occur anyways.
@@ElementalSoldier1 new to car, but the RTV is the same substance he put it back on when he try to put it back? so basically the manufacture put exceed amount of RTV when they install it and it leak into the oil?
@@anhnnguyen7444 Correct, the manufacture originally puts RTV as a sealant for oil leaks, and well the uploader seems to have added, just in my opinion, the same amount of oil that causes the original issue of blocking the oil pick up screen with RTV. Of course aftermarket solution could exist such as gaskets, but RTV is great for imperfections in the manufacturing process.
If you live in the rust belt (which I am not sure if you do), you may want to coat those O2 sensor spacers with a high temperature coating. I used those exact spacers on a vehicle that recieves 20,000 rust belt miles per year, and after 1 year of installation, the spacers were completely rusted out. I decided to buy a pre-coated one this time around though
Bottom line is that almost no sealant really found it's way into the motor, so no harm was done, and I don't think any more sealant would have.
I do see how many BRZs like these will suffer from oil leaks cause people didn't put enough sealant after putting things back together.
Shame on you Subaru for not designing a proper seal.
Hey! I bought some Vasyn shirts the other day that just arrived and I wanted to say it was awesome to find the hand written note in the package. Class act!
Isn’t there way too much sealant on the pan when re-installing?
Sick content as always man👏🏽😎🙌🏽
Keep up the hard work 💪🏽
The dealerships in NC still continue to act like this issue DOES NOT exist. Insane.
Crazy how much there slapping on at the factory. Idk how that wasn’t caught in R&D testing and assembly of the motor. And I can imagine there gonna have to put a TSB out about it.
You could send the oil out for analysis to evaluate how much metal the engine is shedding.
you're not alone. my 86 also came with a crooked belt exactly like that which I had to realign on the pulleys
Sure shot cans are a shop must, and they sell rebuild kits for when you break the little prices over time
Watching you work this was so fascinating! Wish I had enough brain to do this kinda thing!!!
No joke, my jaw dropped when I saw those belts. Hoooooly.
I definitely need to check my belt and oil pan thanks for the insight on the matter
Great video I liked and subscribed
I did a (partial) reseal of the EJ253 on my '06 Forester, including the oil pan. I am a complete novice when it comes to working on cars but even I KNOW that was about 3-5x the amount of sealant you need for that oil pan.
Oh damn, I literally have nightmares of my evo x oil pan when I jacked the car up on my oil pan and destroyed it. Taking off that gasket was terrible. Although I ended up upgrading the pan
imagine if you just used a gasket to put a dang oil pan on. wild concept.
Alot of times those gaskets can leak ive had issues with oil pan gaskets a couple of times.
gaskets can leak which is why some people even put a dab of sealent on gaskets sometimes
RTV is widely used for assembling engines and engine components. If done the proper way, there should not be any problems.
@@thomass8118 until you want it back apart again
Immediately checked my belt after you checked yours mines at mid 3k miles aswell and in good condition thankfully.
didn’t realize your new shop is right next door that’s insane bro🤘🏽
I wonder if in the future will they make oil pan gaskets ??? Or
14:27 always respectful to Bobbi 👍.
At 8:40, do you have an exhaust leak at the manifold to head joint? Lots of soot and carbon there...
I think the header he is using is for the last gen BRZ i wouldn't be surprised if that was the cause.
@@GAMERIC5 same header style
100% exhaust leak. My OCD wouldnt allow it, I'd throw the OEM unit back on.
Do you think this will happen on the 22 WRX cause now I feel like I have to check mine
I didn’t realise the new shop was right next door to the existing one haha, that’s too convenient.
Devin, did you mention this to Subaru?
The RTV issue should be a recall. The belt could be a 'one-off'.
It’s almost like a company maybe named felpro should make a gasket for the oil pan!!!
Ohhhh they do
yep, its sad that they actually allowed this to go into production. great vid!
Lmaooo now Jared wants to get involved with a car when Bobbi sister is there 🤣🤣. I don’t blame you bro
Wow Subaru, really...
That Evo IV though! 😍
I knew this video was coming, kinda expected it to be mentioned in yesterday's video
I would have sent it back that's sick
we use those brake clean cans at my work, theyre a huge lifesaver. we order brake clean by the 55 gallon drum lol
Ouch , that sucks . Glad it's not that bad . No need for jayme to feel bad about being on camera , i feel the same . Keep up with the good work
You put WAY to much sealant when you reinstalled the pan
No he didnt
@@santouchesantouche2873 Yes he did.
@@DrakeN-ow1im you must love leaks
I have a 22 brz and now questioning it now..... My car was a late production and picked it up mid July so maybe im good??
How would I know if the oil pick up is clogged? Mine is @2k miles
Does Subaru/t86 make gaskets for the oil pan or do you have to use RTV?
Any Subaru will have rtv from the factory
That Evo sounds so good man
why is there soot around the exhaust ports are the headers not sealing
I had the same issue with my ka24e nissan hardbody. It had an annoying timing chain rattle from factory so the front cover was probably re sealed a few times trying to fix that thinking it was just a bad chain guide. Last owner used way to much RTV and it clogged the oil pickup. On the highway it started bogging really bad and actually stalled the engine. Spun a bearing and toasted the crank.
Rebuilt the KA for pretty cheap after finding a good crank but yeah rtv in the pickup is bad news. The fix for the rattle is a ratcheting tensioner like it should have had from day one.
Man that sucks that the belt is that bad, sounds like a complaint for SOA
the brake cleaner canister should last you a while. I work at a dealership and all the technicians have one and have had them for years now. I’m pretty sure You can modify the tip to make it spray more aggressive
And don't use fucking GASOLINE to clean parts!
Think you have an exhaust leak on the exhaust flange - that looked really sooty
I was lmao the whole video…awesome content….tell Jamie theres no need to be self conscious….very pretty….love the vids man
They sell rebuild kits for that sure shot brake clean can. We use them at the dealerships.
Classic subaru moment
Why didn't you show the pickup clog?
That brake clean I’ve used working for a dealer it’s legit
Sprite soda can (not a bottle ) green wrap , B a real G .. or go wyln out yellow with camo. dont cap .
Dumb question, why isn't there a screen on the pickup like the wrx?
I don't think you should run the car with that belt. It's gonna snap. Insane to think that subaru factory has so little quality control
I can believe it, haven’t driven a well put together Subaru since the early 2000’s. They’ve been cheaping out on their motors since the Hawkeye year at least
@@tempestsquall5882 well personaly I think real subarus ended with the hawkeye
It's really unfortunate that such a promising motor was released with so many issues! Hopefully they can fix it later on because I absolutely love these cars 😥
I expected nothing but this from a new Subaru boxer motor and why I was so pissed it got put in the new GR86. The more I look at the internals in these cars the more they look like cheaply made economy cars rather than full priced sports cars….
Why wouldn't you decide to replace your serpentine belt the moment you saw it was off a tooth instead of considering using it further. It was already obviously damaged the first time you saw it.
My thoughts exactly. And he put just as much sealant on that sump as it had originally!🤣🤣
Thanks for doing this. Those belts were sus too.
The car is under warranty still right? Why didn’t you have the dealer warranty the belt
Would you not claim the belt under warranty work? Since its improper installation not wear.
that car was buit on a friday lol but you will do it devin great videos guys
Looks like your exhaust manifold has been leaking too
Devin keep up with the new look homie beard all day
I haven't got my gr86 yet, but I cant wait to drop my oil pan the second I do...lol
Jayme is hilarious 😭😂
The beard looks good man grow it out!
pppuufff lol😂keep it up devin!!!!
Just an Accessory belt. Run it til it pops.
When are you moving into the new shop?
I think you should checkout the timing cover rtv n mine as well change the serpentine belt ...
That is way bigger than the spec size bead of sealant that's supposed to be applied and a good amount of it isn't even in the right position. Also the pan bolts weren't tightened in the correct order and I'm pretty sure your drill was going over the torque spec. That stuff is going to be squeezed out everywhere. Not to mention the way in which the pan was removed and cleaned could've cause scratches to the surfaces that could allow leaks.
tell jamie im camera shy too lol nothing to worry about
they did that to my 2013 still fighting in court
Lil Bobby is bangin 😛
Subaru needs to get their shit together man... They slippin like that damn belt.
Why she so self conscious? She has been in videos before and she's a good looking girl.
The belt I'd take back to dealership and get warranty repair. If it keeps chewing itself up you could probably have a case for lemon law.
Just my 2 cents.
Wow, it’s like watching Jimmy Oakes’s Chanel 😂😂
She's shy but so cute 🤣🤣🤣
Please spend the extra for an OEM Japanese made Oil Filter. Mr Subaru has places he sources them as their are fake ones on ebay / Amazon etc.
Aww I thought this was a full tear down of the engine.
When it comes to oil pans I like the old school cork gaskets then to use a tiny bead of sealant on both sides, by tiny I mean like a 1/16 of an inch bead, when it comes to sealant use just enough to seal the surfaces with very minimal squeeze out, and if in doubt remove and start over.
Take the tip off the new sprayer and take the inside piece out and it’ll be the ultimate brake clean sprayer
giving him maintenance
I ended up buying a Veloster N instead of a BRZ/GR86 as a new car and honestly with the quality control problems I've been seeing im glad I did.
Yo Devin real talk, I've been using Valvoline in 2018 STi and one of my coworkers said it's not good engine oil, is he right or not.
run whatever oil you want, at the recommended viscosity. All oil comes from the same refinery. The difference is the additive packages from the companies that market them, but they all have to meet the same regulations around the world so at a minimum - even running the cheapest Super Tech walmart brand oil is fine.
Why not RedLine or Amsoil?
Bro I was joking when I said you should be fine owning one of these since you’re experienced in ripping apart Rodney boxers but you get all the subs now LOL
Why isn't the car back at the dealer to get everything fixed under warranty??
Oh wow that's actually bonkers wtf 😆
As a former 1st gen owner, I didn't have any issues in my BRZ. Ended up selling mine for $18,400.00 at around 98k miles.
This guy is something
you said to put the O2 sensor in the sensor...the right sensor. I think you should say "sensor location" or "header bung". Cheers: Good video
I am not mechanically inclined so sadly my first clue of improperly installed belt would be belt failure. I hope the documentation of this would get a free belt from Subaru since you did not charge them a fee for diagnosing the problem!
As someone who spent a long time working on cars professionally, I don't think that is particularly excessive RTV other than the trailing edge which is really heavy. If you pull an oil pan off of a brand new car from pretty much every single OEM you will find a similar amount of RTV. The bigger issue in my opinion is using the funnel style pick-up tube instead of a flared style one with more surface area of filtering. Also that belt is a huge fuck up.
Just seen jimmys oaks video and he had the same issue
Should I be worried about this with my 22 WRX? Can’t hurt I guess
Selll it and get a Va
You have a warranty fam, relax.
@@FMedia-bb6gf could've gotten an STI limited for the same price honestly
You have a Subaru you should be worried…
If it’s not the rods it’s the ring land failure
Absolutely. The same guy that designed it built the motor in those things.
How's your brother doing? I haven't seen any new vids in a while.
That’s Subaru for you 😂😂😂
Have you dumped clutch on this bad boy at all? 🤣 that can make the belt jump.
