These guys were of a different class. They weren't just great musicians, but were great showmen as well. Glad we have preserved this footage to see what real talent was/is.

Saw Louis and Sam many times at the Sands in Vegas in the 70s. Became friends with them and cherish all the good memories. Feel blessed to have heard these great musicians live.

The word, "dynamic"comes to mind every time I see him perform.

I saw Jimmy Vincent on drums with Louie Prima many years ago. He had chops no doubt about that. He did do a drum solo playing his sticks on the tip of Louie Prima wrist watch. When you have drummers of this caliber you have a pristine world of clean clean clean clean drumming where every sticking counts. No extra mikes or gimmicks to show intense talent. Like Buddy Rich NO FUNNY HATS. You play and you need no Props. Special Lighting Special Amps. You play and thats it. No crutches just playing Talent. enough said.

Its fascinating the way people took so much care about their appearance back then.
Looking at that lady in the audience 0:29 for instance, its almost like she's posing for a painting sitting there in all her finery. And they all look like that. Even everyone in the band.... they're all wearing tailored suits and ties with handkerchiefs. Crazy!

They may have been in costume, another commenter mentioned that this is from a Universal short called "New Orleans Blues". But it is definitely true that people dressed smart and more formally in those days.

My guess would be 1946.I've got a cheapy LP which has a different version of it.Prima was recording for Majestic and the reactivated Varsity Records then.In 1943,he was recording for Eli Oberstein's HIT label. In 1939,he was recording for Oberstein's original Varsity label as "Louis Prima and his Gleeby Rhythm Band".The label folded in late 1940.
