Papa Jo knew something most people don't.
The greatest musicians make it look effortless.
it’s not a drum solo. it’s pure artistry of the highest order
Live
Blert
You don't have to throw shade on all other drum solos just because you like this one.
Those drums need tuning and he needs to take a lesson or two from Mr Rich
@@MrDougiew1 Tuned how? But Rich isn't as musical. That's what counts.
Dude looks like a magician about to pull a rabbit out of his hat, but instead it’s an insane groove. His smile made me smile. Thanks for sharing this!
Protocol of joy. 😊
This is other worldly. I've seen good jazz drummers do Caravan before, but never like this ! THANK YOU !
I met this dear and brilliant drummer in 1976 at a drum clinic.. What else could I say except that the meeting changed my life.. Thank you for sharing this timeless beauty.
What's a drum clinic?
Where you should be.😂😂😂😊
I love his facial expressions. It's like he is saying, "Can you hear them speaking to me? I'm talking back to them." He looks so happy!
That, ladies and gentlemen, is class…😎
That's what I was going to say!!! Well said Mike!
Something that is dearly lacking these days.
@@easterneuropeantracksuit3312sadly true
For sure
AND HOW!!!🥁🥁🥁
absolute quality. a lifetime of drumming in 7"
That smile. He knows exactly what he’s doing.
He makes it look effortless but oh the finesse and classy delivery!! One listens and views in awe. He never attacks, he coaxes, placates, loves the instruments.
I just love that we still have the privilege to see this, hear this.
A man who had fun with his drums 🥁 they were nothing but mere toys for his pleasure and with them he made art for the ears to hear and the soul to feel!
Nicely put and very accurate!! Papa was the stuff.
Papa Jo was easily the best "showman" drummer back in the day. He knew how to get a crowd's attention during a drum solo just by being tasteful. A true master of speed and dynamics.
He was too handsome! I was always distracted by his good looks. He was a good man that was kind to children. Appreciated you Joe Jones!
Speed, dynamics and volume control. Papa Jo could draw you in, like he was whispering a secret to you. He always leaves me wanting more.
I would much rather watch a master like him, Joe Morello or Gene Krupa, than a drummer who just attacks, like Buddy Rich.
Wow wow wow just imagine the hours he put in on the kit , the talent of creating and hearing a rhythmic world and his expressions are priceless!
He doesn't just PLAY the drums......he makes love to them. What a melding of rhythm, dynamics, subtle statements and technical wizardry.
Joe's facial expressions are a pure joy
Drums, cymbals ,sticks ,fine articulation, plus amazing natural talent equals an awesome performance
He's so relaxed! This isn't just jazz, it's zen!
The art of making the drums sublime.
Where is the love button? True showmanship and super talent!😮😊
Imagination, playfulness, effortless technical mastery and the rhythmic magic of none other than the sublime Jo Jones. What a wonderful clip.
I cannot stop watching him, Papa Jo. He's just..... everything.
Always said the happiest drummer ever
Doesn't even break a sweat! So cool it's hot!
so elegant, so clean, so relaxed, flawless, melodic, control, I can't get enough.
I always had trouble telling Papa and Philly apart, and then they went and died within 4 days in 1985. Absolute masters, both of them.
His facial expressions are just Killin me!!! Roflmao whilst he is just playing dynamics, taste, time, groove. WOW.... sweet
I am grinning like an idiot right now. This really grabbed me. Pocket for days. First time I have seen Papa Jo play and it was incredible. I feel like every drummer I like has probably watched him and tried to take things from his style. Wow. Did not expect to be blown away like this. Wow. Thanks.
Amazing. Papa had extreme skills, but what a demonstration of not needing to cram as many notes as possible into each measure. Quality, not quantity. And with only a single cymbal and hi-hat. Can't imagine that Papa would ever lower himself to getting a reaction from an audience by playing a double pedal bass drum roll.
There's groove and then there is vibe. Then there is doing it at all pianissimo.
I used to hang out with Papa Jo at Frank's drum shop in 1976. He suggested I buy a Paste flat ride cymbal that I used on"(Don't Fear) The Reaper the next day. I will be forever grateful.
I know what you did. I had a band in the 80's and that was one of our faves. I didn't have a percussionit so also played the cowbell part. Thank you Sir for that walk down memory lane!
Very cool that Papa Joe suggested the Paiste flat ride. He's a magician on the drums! Btw BOC were the first band I ever saw live at the Capital Center in Largo MD, Uriah Heep opened.
bought my first kit at Frank's in 1969!
Bought my first kit at Frank's in 1975. Slingerland kit with Paiste cymbals. Only had $400 cash on me. They trusted ne for the remaining $100. The hi-hats, coincidentally, were Paiste Formula 602 Sound Edge hats, which I still use to this day. Hanging out with Jo at his crib on East 64th street, I got to check out his hats, which were old A. Zildjians, a thin 13" Top and a Paperthin bottom, maybe 12-3/4", anyway, slightly smaller than the top cymbal. Felt blessed that my first hi-hats, also fairly light, were very much in a Jo Jones mode...Jo used to say, "I was never a player, I was always a listener, and look who I got to listen to." As such, my limitations being manifest, I always aspired to be a good listener on the drum kit.
It’s a rare thing when a drummer communicates joy thru his/her playing- thanks - the young ones should see this
It's incredible how many sounds he could create with a basic kit. This guy was a genius!
Something quite fabulous happening right there
Just fantastic, it always makes me smile watching this guy - even Buddy Rich rated Papa Jo Jones!
Quelle musicalité ! Humour, gestuelle magnifique , swing .Phrasé ..Créativité ...UNIQUE JO JONES !
Proof that at this age muscle memory still exists great job. Love ❤️ your spirit.
Best looking Drummer ever, elegance and Style !
WOW,......a very creative, and very subtle solo. A thinking solo. Unlike much of the bombast you hear today with an excess of drums and cymbals. One ride cymbal and a high hat, a snare and 3 toms. Adult and class all the way. Thank you Papa Jo.
Thats his standard set, Papa Joe could literally play a gig with a pair of brushes and a phone book.
no need to put down modern music
Never heard Papa Jo before this. Thank you for sharing this awesome rendition and amazing skillset of a tremendously gifted percussionist.
i have been a drummer for 45 years and this is the first time I heard of Papa Jo.
Every video that I see him playing, he always has a smile. A master
That man knew a happiness like he just got word he won the lottery and was going to redeem his ticket after the gig was over.
Sitting at a drumset is winning the lottery
What a joy to watch. A man at ease and in control, and best of all, enjoying himself. Thanks for posting.
Nothing quite like watching someone who loves playing drums ! Having a blast along with him!
His style is solid gold. Authentic, volatile, organic, completely aware and fitting are some of the words I feel when listening to this.
That’s how you make the drums talk my friends!!!!!
that drummer is incredible,i’ve never heard of him he’s unbelievably smooth like buddy rich
What a great showman! Not only is he playing some amazing stuff, he's putting on a SHOW!
Jo Jones was one of the greatest drummers of all time.
This man is a savage of coolness and of showmanship. Love It.
Sensitivity with style and a lot of musicality.
I look at Papa Jo and all I can think is, do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life. His face is pure joy the entire time.
I am not sure how I found myself here😃 This kat is amazing!!!
Freakin’ Awesome! Thanks for posting. I was 8 when this was recorded and have never come across it until now. You can’t “un-hear” this, so it is truly is a milestone in my appreciation of drumming as art. We’ve born witness to true greatness.
Oh wow a drummer that doesn’t need 100 different drums, cymbals, gadgets, and yet create one of the best solos of all time.
True! This feels like a knock on Neil Peart though 😢
Amazing...finesse..style...musicality
Tnx for sharing
lost for words....just incredible.
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing this. A totally different take on a drum solo and that smile....😊
Absolutely LOVE the facial expressions!!!!
His facial expressions were part of the performance. I love it
Sublime. The switches from playing two sticks in one hand, and open to close hand drumming, letalone keeping time and keeping it exciting...just sublime.
It's outrageous how slick and dynamic he was, legend.
Pure joy and ecstasy in his drumming... how could you not love his artistry?!
Two things the solo drum and Jo Jones's face, A Gem💖
😯❤🥁🎵🎶 What a tasteful display of classy soloing! Extremely musical!
I’m embarrassed I can’t believe this is my first introduction to Jones. Now I’m obsessed
THE GREATEST JASS DRUMMER EVER
Chapeau 🎩 🎩 🎩 🎩 🎩 An artist on drums. Many thanks to the amazing band. What a musically highlight. Greetings from germany Christoph 👋 👋 👋 👋 👋
Brilliant! One of the most MUSICAL drum solos !
Angel on the drumset . and does that man have posture !
I noticed his great posture too although i didn't see an angel anywhere.
Class, Status, ELEGANCE..... INTEGRITY......EXCELLENCE.....
Joe Jones played on so many great day to hard to believe what a showman rare thing these days
Oh my gosh...drummer is amazing...SMILES to the people in Auditorium to let them know he is doing this for them❤❤❤❤
I thought Papa Jo was the best out of all the jazz drummers at that time 👍🤟
Happiness is drumming !!
Man I grew up religiously hungry for these clips. 60s B &W TV we got a lot of these. I played my uncles drums and caught the fever when I was maybe 2 years old.
Wonderful, thank you 🙏🏼
Phenomenal performance art and a master class in dynamics used compositionally.
Fantastic probably the best caravan solo ive heard
One of my favorite drummers with Buddy Rich and Art B.
If this had been only a few years earlier, those bright shiny drumheads would have been calfskin.
Man, what a solo!
Nice hand work amoung other things. The man is VERY TASTY!!!!!!
He's playing the drums like they're an INSTRUMENT, not just a time keeping device. 5 drums is all he needs! No gimmicks, 10+ drums, no dozen cymbals. Just talent!
WOW,
WOW WOW WOW!
SO SMOOVE!
He makes it look so easy
Love Papa Joe Jones one of my favorite drummers
I’ve never seen a musician enjoy playing as much as this performance
Magical playing. Other world. ❤ I don't play like that. He's amazing.
😊 Love you, too, Papa J. ✨.
Yo - cool leaving applause moments for jazz/opera. Not enough support for the genres ~ ✨
Coleman ❤ 🙏✨
The sound of a kit without muffling, compression, channel gates, just tuning and a deep supply of rimshots and stick/head interaction is incredible to hear in this setting.
I play at a hobby/recreational level, at best! I don't know all the best drummers out there. I know which ones I like, and CZcams has introduced me to countless drummers I would not have heard of otherwise.
This drummer has an unparalleled confidence as well as an incredible aura of a relaxed approach to his solo that I do not think I've seen in another drummer. Fantastic work! I'll be checking out more for sure!👏👏👏
bravo papa jo jones drums
A time where people were civil, controlled, respectful and watched with appreciation. Both the crowd and musicians to each other. Sadly a time gone by.
Was für eine coole Socke . Chapeau 🎩 🎩 🎩 🎩 🎩 R.I.P.
This keeps me Breathless, pure Musicality. One of a Kind! Thank's for your Artistry PAPA
Sheer Genius! John Bonham and the British learned from the great American Jazz & Big Band Percussionist of 20's, 30's, 40's-70's Like Buddy Rich!
Why do I get the goosebumbs when I hear this fellow!!!
Just superb
Electrifying.....splendid.....brilliant....
Loved the close up on the Speed King. The tone of that kick haunts me. At 3:53 he makes a slight adjustment to his snare strainer tension. Then at 4:07 and 5:25 makes another. Incredible!
For sure..Speed King, is high tech without much tech..His traditional grip is extreme fluidity to his no sticks dynamics..✌️
