That General Electric came out really nice! That mahogany and or walnut looks like you applied grain filler too? Keep up the good work, enjoyed the two videos and lets see another 1930's or 40's radio cabinet restoration!

This looks beautiful! I have an old Fairbanks-Morse that I'd like to restore but I am a bit afraid of messing it up.

Take your time. Do it section by section. Sand with the grain. Not too ruff sandpaper. Start with 80 grit finish with 220. Apply the finish clear coat with a rag 3 times with a lite buff between coats. I use an oil bass clear coat because i think it gives the finish a classic look. You can do it.

Unfortunately I did that restoration over five years ago. I can’t remember exactly the materials. Any of the white wood I used medium to dark walnut stain, oil base. I normally use Vera thane as the clear-coat, satin finish oil base for the finish coat. I applied three coats, with a light buff between coats.

What clear coat did you use? What color stains did you use on the different areas? What stripping product did you use on the wood?

Varathane satin finish. Walnut Varathane reduced, thinned out. No stripper, all elbow grease, sanding and hand scraping.

Thats a bueatiful piece. Im in the process of refinishing a 1939 floor radio. It also has the two tones. Can I ask how did you get the darker trim? Is that just applying more stain? It looks almost opaque so not sure.

Hi there Nathan. To tell the truth I cannot remember the name of the product. The customer had decided on the colour of the bottom trim and had purchased the dark stain, it had very high viscosity, I applied two coats then sealed it like the rest of the piece with a satin finish clear coat (Verathane).. Take care .

I’m sorry I can’t remember the name of the stain, but it was the colour of walnut. I used a product named Varathane for the clear-coat satin finish.
